To ask if there is a decent alternative to cow's milk to go in my latte?

Need to cut dairy from my diet as it makes me feel like crap.

Have been entirely successful except for finding another kind of milk to go in my occasional takeaway latte.

Can't have soya either, I don't buy milk or dairy substitutes to use at home so I've no idea what tastes nice.

Is there a decent tasting alternative I can readily order at a coffee shop?

Incidentally when my dd was seeing the allergy paediatric dept about her dairy intolerance, they told us specifically not to give her rice milk because of the arsenic. Apparently it's ok for adults but not children.

@Floisme no shortage of hipsters round where I live!! Tripping over them. Wish they would stop serving me coffee in a glass though, it makes me rage. What's wrong with a cup?!!!!!!

Oatly barista is fantastic. I have had to cut dairy out as I was reacting to something and needed to zero myself from all allergens and introduce them to work out what it is...I may never go back to normal milk as the oatly barista is better.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 08/01/2018 09:43

I second (?) oat milk. The others are too flavoured or they curdle (or both). Or, just go black.

BillywigSting · 08/01/2018 09:44

Oat milk is really lovely.

I can tolerate dairy just fine but prefer oat milk in my coffee to cows milk.

Hazelnut is nice too (but agree with pp that it's good only if you like hazelnuts. I find it makes it taste a bit like a hazelnut latte without the sickly sweetness that syrups give)

Rice milk is grim Confused

Amanduh · 08/01/2018 09:46

DON'T HAVE COSTA 'COCONUT MILK' if you can't have soya! They've got soya in theirs as I found out yesterday Angry

Loyaultemelie · 08/01/2018 09:48

Definitely oat milk I can't take anything in coffee it's black for me but oat milk is the only one I can abide to have on cereal and I have seen my friend put it in coffee and it doesn't curdle which some do. Interestingly I also managed to make Panna Cotta using it with vege gel and vegan baileys and my DH didn't actually notice apart from the slightly almond flavour from the baileys Grin(my "normal" baileys Panna Cotta were the only ones he'd ever eat so I was expecting a riot!)

LyraPotter · 08/01/2018 09:49

Starbucks now do oat and coconut milk in all their shops, would be worth a try to see if you like it Smile

Floisme · 08/01/2018 09:50

Wish they would stop serving me coffee in a glass though, it makes me rage. What's wrong with a cup?!!!!!!

Indeed. I had it served in a jam jar once.

Doesn't all rice contain traces of arsenic?

Peekaboo3 · 08/01/2018 09:53

We have this.

Can't tell the difference at all when we have it in our coffee.

WeAreGerbil · 08/01/2018 09:53

Oatly Barista is great, it froths properly for cappuccinos but it's not gluten free, which is really annoying.

I find almond milk a bit bitter - people who say it's sweet, which are you buying?

Toddlerteaplease · 08/01/2018 09:55

I found almond milk really bitter. But people say it's sweet?

jaynelovesagathachristie · 08/01/2018 10:00

Oat milk I was having Soya but oh wanted to avoid extra oestrogen like qualities so we both drink oat. Had normal milk the other day and yuck tasted weird

blackteasplease · 08/01/2018 10:00

Oooh will try oat milk myself!

nippey · 08/01/2018 10:01

Oatly Barista is amazing, can’t tell the difference!

paperandpaint · 08/01/2018 10:06

Yes PP!! Oat milk is lovely and the Oatly Barista is amazing in porridge or bircher muesli too. However, there is NOTHING that works in tea and I have tried them all. So I am vegan but with milk in tea - not the point I know but with three children, two dogs and working I NEED a decent cup of tea in my life!!

PS - If you have never tried Chocolate Oatly you need some in your life now! A carton barely lasts a day in our house.

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 08/01/2018 10:13

Oat barista all the way! Doesn't curdle!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/01/2018 10:13

Plenish cashew milk

Jozxyqk · 08/01/2018 10:13

Right. I need to find this oatly barista stuff, evidently...

BeyondWW · 08/01/2018 10:15

If it's cause of a health thing rather than vegan thing, have you tried lacto free?

wherethevioletsgrow · 08/01/2018 11:53

I found almond milk really bitter. But people say it's sweet?

I think they are buying the sweetened one that contains sugar. A sweet one with no sugar is the Rude Health almond drink. It is sweetened with rice though so people concerned about arsenic may be wary of it. It is also quite pricey at £2 a litre, but sometimes there are deals on.

wherethevioletsgrow · 08/01/2018 11:56

Doesn't all rice contain traces of arsenic?

Yes, but I think it is especially high in rice milk. It's safe to drink (we're not talking toxic levels) but they recommend not giving it to children under the age of about 5. And of course, kids need the calcium from milk so I don't think it's great to cut it from their diet.

Jerseysilkvelour · 08/01/2018 11:58

I've got and allergy to cashew so best not try that one 😬

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 08/01/2018 12:10

And yes I know I sound right up my own arse but hear me out - if they mainly serve lattes and cappucinos they may use quite a harsh coffee. Not good. You basically need a nice hipster.

You're so right @Floisme!! I bloody hate milky drinks, so have only ever had black coffee. Everyone I know only ever has coffee with milk though.

I find Prêt's filter coffee horrible although I quite like Caffè Nero's americanos but for me, the best coffee out there has to be Waitrose's coffee. It's so good 😍😍😍 Really like Nespresso coffee too.

Any recommendations on the best black coffee in high street cafes? (Sorry to derail the thread!)

LoniceraJaponica · 08/01/2018 13:12

I think you might be right Floisme. I drink white coffee because black coffee is too harsh and bitter, and thin tasting without.
