To ask if there is a decent alternative to cow's milk to go in my latte?

Need to cut dairy from my diet as it makes me feel like crap.

Have been entirely successful except for finding another kind of milk to go in my occasional takeaway latte.

Can't have soya either, I don't buy milk or dairy substitutes to use at home so I've no idea what tastes nice.

Is there a decent tasting alternative I can readily order at a coffee shop?

I went dairy free for an intolerant bf baby. My milk findings were;
Hazelnut - really nice for porridge/cereal, ok in coffee. Weird in tea
Almond - ok for porridge and cereal, slightly better that hazel for coffee, odd in tea.
Coconut - ok porridge, pretty weird in coffee and just nasty in tea
Soya - didn't try as also eliminated soya
Hemp - acceptable in porridge and cereal if you don't mind smell weed while it cooks. Ok in coffee, best option for tea as didn't give weird taste.
Oatly barista - couldn't find any anywhere to try Sad

Honestly, you will never get a latte to taste the same without dairy. I just drank a long coffee with a splash of alternative milk instead, that for me was better than adding loads of fake milk and it tasting really odd.

Oatly barista is great but they obviously have supply chain issues as it can be very hard to track down. Over Christmas the only place I found it was Waitrose - Ocado, Tesco and Sainsbury’s were out of stock for weeks. Luckily back in stock with Ocado last week but they were out of the blue oatly which my daughter drinks!

mashpot · 08/01/2018 13:32

Health food shops may stock it too - I’ve come up trumps in the past. I’m in South London and a few of the local cafes offer it too.

Floisme · 08/01/2018 13:50

WellAlwaysHaveParis If I had to, I'd probably go for Nero's but I wouldn't say I'm a fan. it's just about drinkable at my branch of Waitrose but not great. I don't like Costa or Starbucks.

I know I sound like a roaring snob but a rough coffee can taste ok when it's diluted with milk but dreadful on its own. I like an espresso that takes your head off but that's also quite sweet (naturally - without needing sugar) and the only places I know that can / take the trouble to do that are all independents.

DGRossetti · 08/01/2018 13:53

I love hemp milk, but I simply won't froth, so isn't any use for a latte or a cappuccino.

I tried almond milk (which is nice) but ditto. And coconut milk.

So unless I'm doing something wrong, what non-diary milks can be frothed ?

Sinistrophobia · 08/01/2018 14:10

I just bought the Arla Lactofree milk a few days ago, it's now my holy grail of lactose free milk! It tastes exactly like full fat cows milk and it's amazing!
I love cows milk Blush but am going dairy free with my DD due to her allergy's so have been testing lots of different milks and while they were perfectly okay none were as good as normal cows milk, until I came upon the Arla one!! They also do dairy free cheese and butter which are amazing too Grin

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/01/2018 14:34

Maybe not th cashew milk then, OP GrinBlush

Just cashews your allerhic too or pther nuts too?

RoboticSealpup · 08/01/2018 14:38

I just had my first oat milk latte today in Starbucks today. It was lovely. Better than soya.

Carbohol78 · 08/01/2018 14:43

This thread’s amazing! I don’t have intolerances, but looking to slightly reduce my milk intake as I struggle with the dairy trade somewhat (am not even a vegetarian, so this is extremely hypocritical of me!)

I do love a latte, going to try all these suggestions above, however, I am hopefully 7 plus 5 pregnant (fingers crossed, scan booked for Wednesday), are there any milk substitutes I should avoid for that reason? Or is it it a bad idea in general to lessen dairy intake when pregnant (and breastfeeding)

Branleuse · 08/01/2018 14:50

oat milk is the closest tasting alternative. The alpro one is the best, followed by provitamol and then Oat Dream. (dont bother with oatly as it seperates and curdles)

itsgoingtoofast · 08/01/2018 14:53

Starbucks almond latte is delicious and quite addictive i find! When I'm feeling in need of a treat I have the hot chocolate with almond milk which is lovely too. I can get away with a little dairy but not too much so this is a lovely treat. Nothing else has come close for me and I've tried them all bar the oat barista one mentioned here. Will be giving that a go too!

Justanothernameonthepage · 08/01/2018 14:55

Oatly Barrista definitely

WeAreGerbil · 08/01/2018 15:03

Arla Lactofree is still cows milk.

baby410 · 08/01/2018 15:06

@Carbohol78 I think you need extra calcium when breastfeeding so you would need to make sure you got enough from elsewhere if you were cutting out dairy.

Oatly is definitely the best and the blue one has added calcium.

wherethevioletsgrow · 08/01/2018 20:40

For the person who asked about frothing, I have found that Oatly Barista froths quite well. Give it a go!

Backingvocals · 08/01/2018 20:46

I’ve been trying all these and all I can add is that coconut milk can make you nauseated if you are sensitive to it. Annoying as it was the best one I found.

thetwinkletoescollective · 08/01/2018 21:02

Oatly Barrista is the only way to go for a creamy coffee..amazing. A previous op is right there is no decent milk for a cup of tea.

It sold out everywhere so we ended up buying over the odds for it on Amazon because we couldn't do without it!!

GreenBook · 08/01/2018 21:12

You have to be careful with hot chocolate - they may make it with non dairy milk but often the powder contains dried skimmed cows milk. Safer to stick with coffee.

If you're having it black, AMT is the best I've found in terms of not being bitter and thin, but those are usually only in stations.

JaneEyre70 · 08/01/2018 21:20

Oatly Barista is an amazing milk - doesn't split in coffee and doesn't taste horrid! The only downside is the sugar content, so good for occasional treats but not all the time. Normal oat milk however is vile. I've tried Almond (vile), Hemp (there are no words), Rice (bleurgh) and usually stick to Alpro soya wholebean unsweetened.

wherethevioletsgrow · 09/01/2018 07:30

JayneEyre do you mean the carb contents? Because it doesn't have any added sugars- the carbs and any natural sugars would come from the oats. I don't think there is any need to restrict it unless you were on a low carb diet. Cows milk has carbohydrate too, from lactose.

WeAreGerbil · 09/01/2018 07:52

My local Waitrose normally stocks Oatly Barista but had none yesterday and not even the label was on the shelf. I tried to order some online before Christmas and it didn't appear. What's happening I wonder?

JaneEyre70 · 09/01/2018 09:22

wherethevioletsgrow yes it's a natural sugar but still sugar - I'm diabetic, and there is 40g of sugar in the 1 litre carton. That's why I only use it occasionally as opposed to all the time. It's still the best "milk" out there though Grin. The Alpro unsweetened soya has no sugar at all in, which I why I drink that 99% of the time.

Whatslovegottodo · 09/01/2018 09:28

Oatly barista is largely out of stock right now due to huge demands - they are building another factory.
Provitamil is an oat alternative (not as good as Oatly but passable).
Other choices are Mylk (available in skimmed, semiskimmed and full fat same as dairy!)
Also any of the 'for professionals' won't curdle so alpro soya or alpro almond if they say for professional are good.

Branleuse · 09/01/2018 12:59

i think oatly barista is slightly too thick and tastes a bit floury, although it is much better than the other oatly versions.
Not as good as alpro oat
