Impulse buy as I walked past the butchers on the market, it was lush. But £2.33 for 4 slices! This is why I don't buy it anymore. Love it but for what it actually is it doesn't seem worth the price? I mean its hardily slices of prime meat (from my understanding its from cows that have been cross bread with maize to make an affordable cow that grows out of the ground and lives of water) is it?

I am veggie so can’t comment on the price.

I rather like your idea of where corned beef comes from though. Very cute.

araiwa · 07/01/2018 13:08

God i love corned beef

Sadly the soil here is no good for growing them

bluesu · 07/01/2018 13:10

"Cows cross bread with maize"
Grin. Kinda like moosli?

ReinettePompadour · 07/01/2018 13:13

You buy it in slices? Confused Last time I looked corned beef cows were in chunks in a tin not slices. You need to find some new cows Hmm

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/01/2018 13:16

Grin I love corned beef and now, with this mental image its from cows that have been cross bread with maize to make an affordable cow that grows out of the ground and lives of water I love it even more.. thanks!

Corned Beef Hash is a food of the gods !!!

Goldenbug · 07/01/2018 13:28

It'll cost more if it comes from a butchers. Go to Tesco. 12 slices for £3.

somewhereovertherain · 07/01/2018 13:31

Our tea tonight is corned beef hash. Awesome

somewhereovertherain · 07/01/2018 13:32

Have to disagree with butchers being more expensive than Tesco. Would never ever buy meat in a supermarket it’s no cheaper and usually much worse quality. Butcher all the way.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/01/2018 13:32

Today's lunchtime butty is corned beef, slice of tomato and dijonnaise - bestest butty in the whole wide world Grin

Beamur · 07/01/2018 13:34

Tesco do a corned beef made from British beef, so no rain forest angst.

Bluntness100 · 07/01/2018 13:34

How do you cross breed a cow with a grain and grow it out th ground?

No wonder it's so expensive if someone has managed that scientific marvel Grin

1DAD2KIDS · 07/01/2018 13:35

myusernamewastaken argree it is the food of the gods and awesome. But the reason it is the food of the gods is because only gods and Bill Gates can afford it.

Goldenbug like I said impulse by as I walked past. I used to set my budget at £1 a tin (give or take a few pence). Now a days I am totally price out of the market (mainly due to stubbornness).

Gowgirl · 07/01/2018 13:42

Mumsnet was my go to place for witty conversation, opinions and a good bun fight.....now its corned beef?

Bluntness100 · 07/01/2018 13:43

Op, you're joking right? You don't really think cows can grow out the ground and live off water?

Cakescakescakes · 07/01/2018 13:46

Ooooh a corned beef and brown sauce sandwich... now we’re talking!

1DAD2KIDS · 07/01/2018 13:47

Redphone That's my understanding of the science behind corned cow. I would imagine the educational video on corned cow reproduction fascinating. Also a great subject for Jeremy Kyle. My father was cob and my mother was bovine.

I know, everyone knows corned beef grows on trees, bloody townies not knowing where their food comes from...

MaidOfStars · 07/01/2018 13:49

Cows that grow out of the ground? Like plants?
Well yes, that’s the joke Confused

If you cross a cow with a maize plant, you get an animal that grows out of the ground, requires only water, and from which you can pick corned beef.

*Maize is corn.
*OP hasn’t actually clarified how one harvests corned beef from the hybrid.

ToadOfSadness · 07/01/2018 13:50

I thought it was made of noses, ears and bums with a good helping of fat thrown in and much too much salt.

liz70 · 07/01/2018 13:51

I'm veggie now, but I remember a favourite meal as a child being corned beef hash with mashed potato and tinned sweetcorn, with a bit of brown sauce, all heated and mixed together. Mmmm.

somewhere meat in supermarkets is definitely cheaper than my local butcher. I went in the butcher this week and a kilo of steak mince and 4 chicken fillets was £15, it's over £5 cheaper in Asda. Not a major issue for me but a lot of people just can't afford to shop at independent businesses.
