to be sad at the price of corned beef?

Impulse buy as I walked past the butchers on the market, it was lush. But £2.33 for 4 slices! This is why I don't buy it anymore. Love it but for what it actually is it doesn't seem worth the price? I mean its hardily slices of prime meat (from my understanding its from cows that have been cross bread with maize to make an affordable cow that grows out of the ground and lives of water) is it?

I only use the tinned stuff for hash browns...

Grin at cow/plant hybrid

Justanotherlurker that is my understanding of things. But I must admit in the industrialised age we do get so detached from the source of our foods and lovely things. Little do we see the origins, exploitation or impact of the attractive end product sitting behind the shop glass saying 'take me home'.

Never liked it, doesn't sit well with me. Odds and sods left from moo is my guess. Envy

Blatherskite · 07/01/2018 14:01

I like my corned beef sandwiches with branston pickle.

I have never had corned beef hash Blush

exLtEveDallas · 07/01/2018 14:01

Corned beef hash. Tinned cow, potatoes, carrots, onions bought together with Worcestershire sauce and wholegrain mustard. Mmmm.

1DAD2KIDS · 07/01/2018 14:03

Blatherskite I have never had corned beef hash

You never will do with that attitude. Get out a small loan, go out and buy/make it. You wont regret it.

No rain forest angst with Argentinian corned beef either.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 07/01/2018 14:04

Reminds me of a joke -
"Oh, don't eat those cheap burgers, they're just made of lips and testicles."
"Really? They're made of Mick Jagger?"
Cheap processed meat is Mick Jagger meat in our house. Gives a whole new meaning to chicken nuggets.

Oldraver · 07/01/2018 14:05

This reminds me of someone I worked with who used to get all snobby about only buying Corned Beef off the deli counter...certainly not out of tins Grin

quizqueen · 07/01/2018 14:06

The price to the cow to feed you slices of corned beef was, sadly, much higher.

Qvar · 07/01/2018 14:08

NObody cares, quizqueen. Humans are omnivores, suck it up.

RhythmStix · 07/01/2018 14:09

Cross bread:? Why is it cross? Did the butter run away?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 07/01/2018 14:09

I've only had corned beef once in my whole life, and that was 20 years ago. I just didn't get it.

Snowflakesandsparkle · 07/01/2018 14:11

Corned beef and red onion sandwich.... Sandwich of the Gods!

noeffingidea · 07/01/2018 14:11

Corned beef sold in slices in the butchers is exactly the same as corned beef sold in tins in supermarkets. As a relative who is a butcher once informed me.
I'm surprised at the price now. It used to be one of our cheapest dinners when I was growing up, I would guess some families can't afford it now.

In Aberdeen, in 1964, 500 people were hospitalised following a typhoid outbreak, which was later traced to a single 6lb (2.7kg?) can of corned beef from Argentina, that had become contaminated during manufacturing. It was one of the main subjects of the Milne report which informed food safety policy and laws for many years afterwards

of course the main lesson is that only in Aberdeen would a 6lb can of corned beef be shared between 500 people

daisychain01 · 07/01/2018 14:17

Arse and lips. Nice with pickle though

Don't forget the toe nails and udders Envy

Blatherskite · 07/01/2018 14:19

1DAD2KIDS I need a good recipe to follow. Google seems to have loads. Do I want to pair it with beans (traditional apparently) or poached/fried eggs?

glueandstick · 07/01/2018 14:23

Ooh I love a corned beef hash.

Grated carrot, fried onion bit of oxo and thinly sliced potato on top.

Or mixed with baked beans and topped with cheese mash.

Know what we’re having midweek now!

BeeFarseer · 07/01/2018 14:25

Corned beef hash is amaizing seewhatIdidthere. We buy corned beef in slices. Tins are banned in my house since DH got into a fight with one and lost. That was a fun trip to A&E.

Corned beef hash in our house is just mashed potatoes (very buttery) mixed with corned beef, served with baked beans. Sometimes I'll fry half an onion and top mine with that, but no-one else likes it.

NurseButtercup · 07/01/2018 14:25

YANBU corned beef is ridiculously expensive for what it is. Growing up this is what my mom served when she was a bit skint.

Just before xmas I bought 4 slices of corned beef in Aldi for £1.10 and I noticed they were also selling tinned corned beef for £1.40....

I don't know if these prices are still correct? I haven't been shopping because I'm trying to eat to the back of my cupboard and empty the freezer.

Maelstrop · 07/01/2018 14:31

Bought a tin in Aldi yesterday for £1.29. We’ll make corned beef hash with it. Brown sauce on the side.

viques · 07/01/2018 14:33

if I tell you my corned beef story it might help to resolve your dilemma.

the punch line is "and when I looked closer it was not only skin, but skin with hair. I can still remember the feel of it in my mouth"

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/01/2018 14:39

So much corned beef hate!

It doesn't only grow in Argentina;
It isn't lips and arse;
It has been around since the Pharaohs...

Our local butcher makes it, it is bloody expensive / time consuming to make, so he sells it in slices and it is one of his best sellers. It is lovely!

BigBaboonBum · 07/01/2018 14:42

I was just talking about this yesterday buying corned beef! Corned beef hash used to be a working mans tea... now thanks to the price rises and wages not coming up to meet them, it’s a rich mans dinner! Lol Grin
