to be sad at the price of corned beef?

Impulse buy as I walked past the butchers on the market, it was lush. But £2.33 for 4 slices! This is why I don't buy it anymore. Love it but for what it actually is it doesn't seem worth the price? I mean its hardily slices of prime meat (from my understanding its from cows that have been cross bread with maize to make an affordable cow that grows out of the ground and lives of water) is it?

I want a corned beef sandwich so bad right now. There's a tin in the fridge and an open jar of picallili. Must buy cheap white bread right now.

mrsharrison · 08/01/2018 15:34

Nine slices for £2 from Iceland today. I don't like the tins - weak wrists.
Corned beef and picalilli sandwich coming up.

Corned beef hash. Store cupboard ingredients..
1 x sliced onion sautéed, 2 x chopped garlic cloves in next.
1 x tin of beef, 1 x can of corn and 1 x can of potatoes that have been drained and then sliced. Heat through.
Season.
Serve with a fried egg and dollops of Ketchup.

To the above basic recipe, I sometimes roll with the punches and add a couple of fresh chopped tomatoes, sliced spring cabbage or even chopped Kale. Maybe thyme and or oregano. We scoff the lot.

Bully beef is great - Corned beef, Jamaican style.

So happy to have just found a tin in the back of the cupboard, hmm what to do with it? Corned beef omelette? Corned beef and brown sauce sandwich? Oh the possibilities...

I did just RTFT though to see what the story was of the hairy skin?

cathyclown · 08/01/2018 17:01

Anxiousally,

If you get the tin opened (if it has a key and most do), please tell me how you managed it without serious injury, I have the scars!

Don't know why they don't have a ring pull. The shape of the tins that I see in the supermarkets are kind of oblong, fatter at the bottom than the top and are impossible to use a tin opener on. But all tips welcome! Maybe I am not looking hard enough for better shaped tins or something, or maybe I should just get a life and keep buying the easy to open slices pack to save my hands!

Crispbutty · 08/01/2018 17:30

Corned beef hash was a weekly dish when I was a kid and my mum only ever used sliced, never tinned. I still use her recipe and it's so simple.

4 slices corned beef crumbled up
1 onion finely diced
Old white potatoes cubed (about 5 potatoes)
2 or 3 carrots cubed
1oxo cube and salt and white pepper
Hot water

Bring to a boil in a pan on job then simmer for an hour till veg soft

Sometines she would finish it off in oven with a shortcrust pastry lid

Serve with red cabbage or beetroot

I sometimes do mine in the slow cooker too.

ginghambox · 08/01/2018 17:41

DunkandEgg That is NOT corned beef hash
Garlic fuck off
Corn fuck off
Fried egg fuck off

DunkandEgg · 08/01/2018 17:49

Oo-er missus! What's rattled your hash cage Grin

Absol-fucking-lutley you add garlic, corn and egg. It's boring, dull and dry otherwise. So nurr.

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/01/2018 17:56

CBH is not dry without garlic, corn and egg because CBH is potatoes, carrots, onions, gravy with worcester sauce, peas or sprouts and corned beef. Serve with dumplings or pancakes, not egg or garlic.

If you wanted you could do it totally store cupboard and use canned potatoes, carrots and peas and instant gravy.

Crispbutty · 08/01/2018 18:07

Garlic has no place in a real corned beef hash. Confused

DunkandEgg · 08/01/2018 18:17

Woah Woah hold up. Let's forget about my garlic and egg for one second here because sprouts, peas and pancakes? Fucking pancakes?
Pass me some smelling salts, per-lease! Shock

iklboo · 08/01/2018 19:41

Our family CBH (tater hash) recipe is the same as @Crispbutty - where do you hail from Crisp?

user187656748 · 08/01/2018 19:51

At the risk of outing myself I had to break off from wedding dress shopping with my DM MIL and bridesmaids to buy some emergency corned beef. Luckily M&S came up trumps and we were able to continue (I was four months pregnant at the time).

Ollivander84 · 08/01/2018 20:10

iklboo - mine is almost identical! Lancashire Grin

mrsharrison · 09/01/2018 17:25

Had another cb and picallili sandwich today. Cat had a slice too. Iceland slices too thin.
I don't care how pricey it is.
I got gammon and smoked salmon in fridge but am pushing them out of way for this food of the gods.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 09/01/2018 17:46

I think its still fairly cheap in that you can make a decent meal out of a tin and a few carrots, potatoes and sticks of celery. I put some peas and Worcester sauce in mine and sometimes add a pastry crust which doesn't add much to the cost.

iklboo · 09/01/2018 19:18

@Ollivander84 My family & I all originally hail from Salford

spangles1963 · 10/01/2018 18:08

I don't understand why I love corned beef, yet I really dislike beef in any other form,e.g. roast or in steak form. Am I odd?
