is this over or under eating?

1 cup of chai
1 toasted tea cake with marg.
1 cup a soup
4 slices of bread
4 M&S chicken pakora
1 pack of walkers fusions (baked crisps)
1 cup of coffee

How does this compare in quantity to what you eat?

Make a plan.
Do you find it easier to vary things, or do you prefer to stick to the same foods?

If you already know you will eat XYZ at x o'clock, you are much more likely to stick to it.

Your list to me looks like crap food, for a sad person. Do you also have to make food for other people?

Work out what you want - lose weight - how?, feel better - not just food etc. Loads of people will help you. Even if you're not sure, you can come back and bounce ideas about.

Have you got anyone in RL that can help you? Try not to buy any more crap. If you hate cooking, or can't be bothered, work out a list of healthy, almost zero-effort, quick meals, several have already been suggested.

Good luck, look after yourself, ask for more help if you need it.

OP, if you are in a bad place mentally, actively making a healthier choice take you to the better place. Get vitamine supplements. Eat more fruit/veg, and protein. And yes to asking for help, there are many people like you out there, including me.

JaceLancs · 07/01/2018 08:48

I’m dieting - lost 4 stone so far
Yesterday had porridge for breakfast
Whole meal wrap with ham and onions for lunch with some salad and melon
Pork casserole with courgettes, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussel sprouts for dinner
Also had 2 margaritas 😊

Mummadeeze · 07/01/2018 09:02

That day's worth of food is me on a hangover day - all those carbs are a recipe for disaster! I come from an obese family and we all put on weight v quickly and easily. The only way I can control mine is by eating low carb. I tend to have a protein shake for breakfast and dinner and a big low carb lunch like salad, coleslaw and roast chicken or salmon. Or cheese and mushroom omelette and sausages. I put on a stone over Christmas by eating v badly and unhealthily but have lost half of it already since New Year's Day by sticking to the diet I just mentioned. The protein shakes taste nice and are really filling. If you can't do two a day, I would really recommend having one for breakfast anyway as they set you up for the day and make you feel good. Best of luck.

GameChanger01 · 07/01/2018 09:04

Honestly I eat way more than that but much more nutritious- terrible diet and whilst yes maybe less calories you won't build any useful time when exercising and will probably end up being more hungry come the evening and end up eating more

GameChanger01 · 07/01/2018 09:04

Sorry useful tone*

Pippioddstocking · 07/01/2018 09:15

Op - try and aim for 2 portions of fruit or veg with each meal , that means the vitamin content is sorted straight away .
Then aim for a small amount of protein - eggs, milk, meat , fish , cheese - that's part two of the meal .
Next aim for some carbohydrate , but try and make it wholemeal ( more filling and better for you)- brown rice, pasta, wholemeal bread, potatoe with skin still on .

A combination of this in every meal should see you on the right track. Remember to try to avoid added sugars in shop brought sauces or hidden sugars in your drinks .

depthsofdespair · 07/01/2018 19:00

yeah, I make food for somebody else...decent, healthy food. I've made a chilli with peppers, onions and kidney beans tonight, thats healthy right?
I wouldn't say i'm in a good place mentally now, no. not rock bottom but going that way.

Have you tried a slimming group op? I love going to mine - steady weight loss and great company every week.

TheViceOfReason · 08/01/2018 11:09

In terms of calorie content it's probably about right if you want to lose weight.

1 cup of chai - 50kcal (if with milk/sugar)
1 toasted tea cake with marg - 200kcal
1 cup a soup - 100kcal
4 slices of bread - between 400 and 600kcal depending on type
4 M&S chicken pakora - 300kcal ish
1 pack of walkers fusions (baked crisps) - 110kcal
1 cup of coffee - 50kcal (if with milk/sugar)
Veg soup - 200kcal ish

So between 1300 and 1600kcal (assuming you don't eat anything else after the soup)

There nothing inherently wrong with your teacake for breakfast, and if you aren't in a great place mentally i'd not try to change TOO much - and the veg soup - or the chilli - aren't bad dinners (assuming not a massive pile of chilli with loads of rice, cheese, sour cream etc).

It's the middle of the day where you've gone wrong.

Are you at home or work? If at work, make up a salad box, if at home have a stir fry with loads of veg - both will fill you up and make you feel better about yourself and your diet, making it easier to avoid filling with crap food.

RhiWrites · 08/01/2018 11:33

Hi OP, please don’t feel sad. I’d say your diet is a bit sad, not big enough nice enough meals so you’re adding “treats” which probably make you feel more miserable.

I’ll be your weight loss buddy if you want? PM me and I’ll share my useenane on MFP.

I think you should eat the chilli tonight, that will warm you up a bit.

The main thing I’d worry about is four slices of bread and a cup a soup. Bread is crazy calorific. Better to have more soup and no bread, sorry.

I’m working on weight loss and I think it’s very important everything you eat should be really nice. So I’d have a much nicer soup, with sourdough bread if I really wanted it.

Ebb · 08/01/2018 16:54

I've had a latte, a latte macchiato ( Tassimo jobbies ), two hot cross buns, a packet of pickled onion monster munch and two chocolate hobnobs. I will eat a fairly healthy evening meal. I don't tend to eat breakfast ( start work at 7am ) and do keep an eye on my calories. I've lost 2 stone in the past 6mths and am roughly where I want to be weight wise. I had to get my head in the right place before I did it though.

safariboot · 08/01/2018 18:21

IMHO you should have posted a whole day's eating. Not just what you've had so far and then drip feed what you plan on having later, which is leading everyone to judge based on an incomplete picture. I too often have no fruit and veg with my lunch, but then make it up in my evening meal.

LyraPotter · 08/01/2018 18:55

It isn't a huge amount of food love. If you're trying to lose weight I'm not sure that will help - I expect you're still hungry, and your body is likely to go into starvation mode because you aren't eating enough.

Please don't feel that you have to starve yourself. It won't help at all. It seems like the fact that you are asking whether this is over or under eating suggests that you don't have the best relationship with food, as you aren't sure about the nutritional content of what you are eating.

Rather than focusing on calories I would try focusing on varying your food a bit more. This includes fruit and veg, protein, carbs and good fat (all of which are needed for a healthy diet!). It's not about losing weight as much as learning to have an intuitive relationship with food where you can listen to what your body wants.

Sorry if I have made loads of untrue assumptions x

depthsofdespair · 08/01/2018 20:49

safari that was all I was going to eat, after reading a bit of the thread I made soup. How is that drip feeding?

OP posts:
Thudercatsrule · 08/01/2018 21:48

Eeekkk...my diet is really rubbish then.

Pot noodle and half a can of baked beans with cheese, 3 glasses of cava and 1 baileys 😳

RebeccaBunch · 09/01/2018 00:59

Op there is a Group on FB called Rebel Fit / they are all about undoing all the brainwashing and negativity we are subject to re food and dieting, and relearning how to simply eat nutritious food.

As a lifelong emotional and over eater, what I have learned from them has been life changing and wonderful.

You can check them out on fb and also he does a blog. I don't work for them - just happy customer.

LemonysSnicket · 09/01/2018 01:07

Well in a day it’s probably about right calorie wise but crap health wise.
Cut out the extra slices of bread, pakoras and crisps and have a proper tea.

LemonysSnicket · 09/01/2018 01:10

Oh just seen the calorie calculations.

So it’s under-calorie over-crap. Probably too high in salt, fat and all the nasties but too low in calories. So you’ll be hungry and unhealthy ...how fun.

LemonysSnicket · 09/01/2018 01:16

But, I do want to stress don’t be disheartened. My diet is pure shit sometimes and I can sense you want to do well. Believe in yourself and treat your body and mind like you love yourself, don’t punish yourself or blame yourself or think you’re bad or anything.

You’ll get there x x

Bouledeneige · 09/01/2018 01:44

i understand not being bothered to cook much or hoping to hold off but as everyones said that leads to some worse food choices.

I didnt have an especially well balanced day but I've had:

3 Cups of coffee (!)
Chicken milanese and spinach (out for business lunch)

Mushrooms on toast
Large yoghurt

Cup of tea

TheHodgeHeg · 09/01/2018 01:46

You definitely need to try for more veg and eat more "proper" food rather than cup a soup and ready meals but tbh my diet isn't much better.

Yesterday I had a cup of tea for breakfast, roast chicken with rice and a (v v small) salad for lunch, fruit for a snack, shepherds pie for dinner, more fruit for after dinner and then a bit of Christmas chocolate. Ok on fruit but very lacking in vegetables and wholegrains...

I always feel really good when I've eaten plenty of veg and cut back the sugar. It's hard to do though.

lonelymum86 · 10/01/2018 10:33

@depthsofdespair I think it’s so hard when you are mentally in a hard place to then fuel your body properly

I have decided my goal this month (and that’s what important is to set some smart goals) is to be focussed on some daily planning for food. I can’t always do weekly. But I really want to try hard on daily. I know it’s probably more expensive but somehow if I can work a day at a time (e.g evening before plan for the next day - breakfast is generally ok for me as I have egg/porridge etc) it’s lunch onwards that is my problem!

agbnb · 10/01/2018 11:51

It's undereating for me at my BMI

It's not that it's particularly high or low calorie since you posted late afternoon (so I assume you eat more) but the nutritional value is really poor

If I ate like that I'd feel lethargic and grumpy and probably end up constipated! It looks like my hangover days!
