To think a white wash means just that!?

Lighthearted thread... Asked DH to put some whites in the washing machine, I'd half filled it but needed to feed DD and get her to bed. I was very specific with what else needed to go in (just because he has form for putting in DD's vests that are white but with colourful spots and patterns). I went to put it on and realised it was over full which I thought was strange, he's chucked in clothes of all the colours of the rainbow in. I'm wondering what he heard whilst I uttered the words 'white' and 'white wash'!? Hmm

Do any of your OH's defy logic?

I am having serious palpitations here

My neighbours washing is all the same colour of sludgy - I call it a dirty wash Grin

Then I get all smug when my hurt the eyes it’s so blindingly bright white wash goes out on my line

This has been going on for 10 years Smile

PositivelyPERF · 05/01/2018 11:30

I just don't buy white clothes. 😁 The only stuff that gets seperated is the human stuff and animal stuff. TBF that's probably because I've two washing machines, otherwise we'd be walking around in furry clothes. I'm a slattern. 😊

Liz38 · 05/01/2018 11:35

If he's anything like my DH he only heard the words washing and machine. He would have filtered the others out Confused and then said, all hurt and upset 'but I was helping you'. Clear instructions are great but only if they are heard!

ProseccoMamam · 05/01/2018 15:36

@lulu12345 I am the exact same!! I do darks, bright colours, light colours, whites, baby wash and then a bedding/towels. Grin I absolutely love doing laundry though!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 05/01/2018 15:50

Positively that’s my tactic. The half dozen bits we have are the eldest’s school/orchestra shirts, one of her bras, and two random white vests belonging to the smallest.

I can’t wait until the white shirts leave the house then I don’t have to bother at all!

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/01/2018 15:53

Its a conspiracy by your DH to ensure he never has to do the laundry again because he's so crap at getting it right.

Laiste · 05/01/2018 15:58

When my eldest came back home recently i was reminding her of the wash basket rules - whites here darks there ect. She rolled her eyes and said 'Oh god yes - i forgot the washing apartheid here'.

I had to laugh Blush

GaryWilmotsTeeth · 05/01/2018 16:31

here is whites, lights, brights, darks, delicates.

I lent all dd's still beautifully white Babygro's and vests to SIL to use for DN when DD had out grown them. When they came back a year later for DS to use, everything was sludgy grey. I was gutted.

BahHumbygge · 05/01/2018 17:21

I do laundry in the following categories

Whites (including pale blue and other lights)
Colours
Things with zips like jeans and hoodies. I find delicate jersey fabrics can develop holes, so try to keep them separate from zips. Towels can go in this wash as they're a robust fabric.

nosyupnorth · 05/01/2018 17:47

good grief, suddenly i understand posters on here that claim to spend 20 hours a week doing laundry - although i still can't understand why! Confused

when i had my own machine i'd split stuff into light and dark if there was enough stuff to justify it but now i have to walk to a launderette it all goes in together and like hell i'm going to pay more to run multiple small washes instead of one big one

i've never noticed any significant effect, and I don't think I'd care even if I did.

SheNumpty · 05/01/2018 18:46

I do lights, brights, whites, and darks. I hate dingy whites, they make me sad.

Meowstro · 06/01/2018 00:22

I don't do brights as they tend to go in with the dark wash but you may have converted me, don't know why it never thought of it!

Found a pair of his black socks in there!! My fault for not checking thoroughly but that's ridiculous.

MrsMoastyToasty, he thinks it's the perfect crime.

My greatest pet hate! Grrrrrrr

Ohmyfuck · 06/01/2018 00:28

PS Colour Catchers are amazing!

greenlids · 06/01/2018 00:30

My whites wash isn't entirely white, it is more of a hot cottons wash. Tea towels, dishcloths, white/cream/beige/light blue towels and sheets, any random white socks & knickers, pale blue shirts.

Basically anything on the pale side that can stand a hot wash.

ShiftyLookingBadger · 07/01/2018 18:02

Not whites, but 'lights' here. I have 5/6 loads at least: 1x lights, 1x darks, 2x mixed (because there's so much!) and a separate wash for bed linen and towels, usually 2. I use colour catchers in both the mixed loads.

TheDamnedTruth · 07/01/2018 18:10

I don't separate anything. All clothes get put in together on a 'mixed' wash.

Finklestein1984 · 07/01/2018 19:41

I do a few different washes. Since having LO I do a whites as I love putting him to bed in crisp white babygros so I have an increase in whites now!

Then I do a lights and a dark wash. Also separate DHs work stuff as he works outside and it’s bloody disgusting. We also have a dog so all his stuff gets done separately too. But everything on 40 and the machine is set to number 4 for everything, purely because it’s the shortest cycle - I can’t be doing with a 3 hour wash!

blueamberuk · 07/01/2018 23:31

If in doubt - colourcatcher sheets - essential laundry kit!

KidLorneRoll · 08/01/2018 00:10

Everything here gets chucked in together on the same program. Everything comes out the same colour it went in as with modern detergents there is no need to wash at hot temperatures any more.

Fascinate · 08/01/2018 03:49

Vanish White is your friend. My DS's clothes used to come back from his dad's that dirty sludge colour, relatively quickly cured by soaking the whites in Vanish while the coloured were in the machine. Soon learned not to send him off to hus dads with white t shirts though.

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 08/01/2018 04:11

I can't believe so many people do not separate whites, I even have a separate laundry bag within my basket just for whites.
Mainly consists of school shirts and polo tops, socks, vests and knickers for dd (6)

I hate seeing dc in school uniform that is supposed to be white but looks dirty or grey.
Whites can be revived by hanging out in strong direct sunlight.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/01/2018 07:48

I imagine once we get into the DC wearing white school shirts once they're in the juniors then we will have enough whites for their own load. The infants wear dark yellow / burgundy however, so we don't have that many whites / lights for now!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 08/01/2018 07:54

I don’t know why schools bother with white shirts, they’re ridiculous even at secondary level

apostropheuse · 08/01/2018 08:03

White's must have a category all to themselves, it's a mortal sin to do otherwise. I know this to be true due to my granny and mother telling me. I've been complimented on my whites. Truly. Halo

Lights and darks are separate categories too, as are greys.
