To think a white wash means just that!?

Lighthearted thread... Asked DH to put some whites in the washing machine, I'd half filled it but needed to feed DD and get her to bed. I was very specific with what else needed to go in (just because he has form for putting in DD's vests that are white but with colourful spots and patterns). I went to put it on and realised it was over full which I thought was strange, he's chucked in clothes of all the colours of the rainbow in. I'm wondering what he heard whilst I uttered the words 'white' and 'white wash'!? Hmm

Do any of your OH's defy logic?

A black towel would definitely run!

ReinettePompadour · 05/01/2018 09:15

I do lights and darks. I also do ds clothes separately with a soap free liquid as he has eczema but dh will chuck everyones all in together and throw tonnes of powder in. I then have to take ds clothes and rinse them at least twice to get rid of the powder. Hmm

I hate complaining about dh doing the washing because he's a stroppy git who will sulk because in his mind he's helping. I just don't say anything now, I just let him help then fix it when he's at work. Blush

Laiste · 05/01/2018 09:53

I have black towels in the car (don't ask) and they run. A sock got in with them once.

Yes bedding on it's own always. That takes 2 loads anyway, no room for anything else in with it.

dramallamakarma · 05/01/2018 09:58

I don't let DH anywhere near the washing apart from his work clothes!

We have a white wash & also a 'princess wash' as DD wears a lot of pink & DH wears a lot of red so that fills a load easily Grin

ChristmasTablecloth · 05/01/2018 10:01

I have 60 degree wash whites (mainly towels and bedding - all our sheets and pillow cases are white and my duvet covers are all white or cream) and 40 degree wash whites (school shirts, white underwear, t shirts, dressing gowns, bras etc). I might put a tea towel which is mainly white with a bit of colour in the hot wash and I suppose I sometimes sneak a pale blue or pink t shirt into the warm wash, but otherwise I am rigid controlling strict about what goes in with what wash.

IHeartKingThistle · 05/01/2018 10:04

Oh God. I separate nothing.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 05/01/2018 10:05

Love the princess wash 🙂 My whites are also white due to white only rule. Though if white with minimal pattern also go in. Any more than say 40% non white with white eg thick striping or 😖 white sleeves only have their own wash on 30 with colour catcher. If their colours are particularly dark I also separate info lights with white and darks with white. Xmas Wink

BertieBotts · 05/01/2018 10:09

My whites contains anything white with spots/patterns on, pastels, light greys, yellow unless it's mustard (that runs) and light/bright blues - because I've heard that a bright blue can give the effect of whitening if it does run, so they can stay.

Then there's a brights wash which includes any bright colours like red, turquoise, green, mustard, etc, and greys and any very old darks which I know have no run left in them can go in.

Then darks.

DH doesn't separate stuff properly either and it bugs me.

BertieBotts · 05/01/2018 10:10

I used to do proper colour themed washes but DH doesn't let me let the washing build up that much any more Grin He will just do it himself which upsets me!

DonkeyExplosion · 05/01/2018 10:11

I do whites, brights, lights & darks.

I also do a specific red/purple wash once a week too as we have an unreasonable amount of those colours floating about.

astoundedgoat · 05/01/2018 10:13

All our bedding and towels are plain white, so a white wash (which also = cotton wash too, obv.) is fairly straightforward for us and nothing ever works its way in. Then there's a light wash (mixed) and dark wash (mixed).

Sometimes I send the white out to a laundry service because we have quite a small flat and I hate having laundry hanging around drying when there's too much for the heated airer.

flowery · 05/01/2018 10:14

”When I do a whites wash, I include items that are white but have coloured bits on them. This is because they are quite clearly designed not to run - if the coloured parts run, they would ruin the garment.”

I used to believe this. Until I bought a red and white gingham table cloth... [bitter]

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 05/01/2018 10:14

My towels have never run, I stick them in with light bedding on a 95 wash and they don’t run. Maybe it depends on the brand.

Whitecurrants · 05/01/2018 10:50

I’m just impressed that you lot have DPs who know where the washing machine is

HopefulForToday · 05/01/2018 10:52

I've never in my life done a white wash and nor has dh (as long as I've known him).

All our stuff goes in together, colours, whiltes, the lot.

LAlady · 05/01/2018 10:52

I do whites and lights as two separate washes (plus a separate dark wash).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/01/2018 10:59

Clothes of a colleague of mine were nearly all in shades of sludgy blue/sludgy grey/sludgy purple.
Eventually I found out why - she borrowed a pair of a little dd's nice white tights for her own dd for some special occasion - we were abroad and you couldn't buy such things locally.

She washed and returned them - now a dismal shade of greyish off-white.
Even my mother once asked how I kept white things white - er, a whites only wash? I don't think it had ever occurred to her, but that probably dated from habit in the pre automatic washing machine era, where the machine had to be dragged out, connected to taps and the clothes put through the wringer, so you wouldn't do more washes than you had to.

CappuccinoCake · 05/01/2018 11:01

Whitecurrants - id be more concerned to have a partner who didn't use the washing machine!!

We rarely do a 60 wash as even our duvet covers day 40.

I do a whites for school shirts and polos with some oxy white stuff, then lights and darks.

The rainbows t shirt baffles me - whiteish with red sleeves....

CappuccinoCake · 05/01/2018 11:03

I didn't used to do separate whitewash when my kids weren't at school - the odd top can't really justify a full load- I think that's why some people dont do a whitewash (your colleague for example- if only a pair of tights you can't do that on its own )

KTDaly · 05/01/2018 11:06

God who knew there were so many washes?!!
We do whites/lights, colours, darks and towels.
Our lights always go on a 60 degree wash and everything else goes on a 40.

Ihaterapmusic · 05/01/2018 11:08

I never let my OH do the washing as I'm mega fussy.. And him and DS are both color blind so have no idea

Whites
Black / navy's
Colors like cerise pinks and oranges
Light colors for pastels.

Dp uniform separate as oily. Followed my and empty wash to make sure the drum is clean

Bedding separate.. Every two days.. Maybe 3
Towels separately everyday after showers.

Can't stand laundry in the basket I honestly have a shit fit if it's half full so I more than twice a week will put just two items in the machine to get it out the way

Reading back. I'm prob a bit 😜 crazy. But it don't take up much time. I often have the timer set so a cycle done for when I wake up. Or get home or whatever..
Ironing it is my hate.. And u iron everything except bras and socks. But that's a whole diff story lmao

Aspieparent · 05/01/2018 11:12

We don't do separate washed. Having all boys we have very few light and white clothes. Tbf I think the only whites we have are the 2 youngest vests. It's all gets thrown in on a 40. Our bedding navy and the dcs have dark blue and eldest dc has claret bedding so all that gets washed at a 40 as well.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 05/01/2018 11:14

We do lights separately from whites.

Clearly “we” don’t. You do. Your husband doesn’t seem to understand washing. Does he not do laundry?

BigGlasses · 05/01/2018 11:14

I seperate all my washing into various categories all based on colour. But I don't seperate on type, eg sports kit goes in with anything, bedding goes in with anything. All my whites are white, it's a long time since I had chewing gum grey underwear. Colour categories are:

White (or 90% white)
Pastels and other white up to 60% white
Pure Black and non patterned navy
Blues and Greens
Reds/Purple/Orange/Pink/brown
Grey (we have a lot of school clothes and DH wears a lot of grey)
Heavily patterned (navy and white stripes, black with red flowers)

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 05/01/2018 11:19

DH did it once.

With his white shirts and some red football socks!

He didn’t do it again Wink

He does have form for chucking stuff in the tumble dryer though - couple of nice tops ruined before I went spare and told him to ASK or just hang it and stop being lazy.
