Storm Grayson

Posting for traffic! Grin

Anyone in the firing line?

We're set to get absolutely clobbered.

Every business and school called to shut yesterday afternoon which is unusual for here, we're used to weather.

Last big storm we had in October we were without power for 7 days. But now we have his polar front coming on the back of it where it's going to be about -30. Sad

The next week is going to be a bloody struggle that's for sure.

@HelenaDove to be fair the last storm knocked out most of the state I think and he surrounding 3 States. We finally got put back on when we got power crews from the other side of the country to help.

They were treated like superstars. 15 big trucks showed up at the same time on our island. Every lunch time people clubbed together to five them a slap up free lunch, one day they even had lobster donated by a local fisherman. Grin

The problem with this being such a massive storm is that it's hard to draft power crews in from other states as they need them themselves.

Canada usually helps but they'll have their hands full with this too.

Although it was shit being told were lowest priority.

We lost power for over a week over Xmas once when ds was a newborn. That was horrific.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 04/01/2018 15:05

Oooh this sounds like a bad one. Stay safe everyone in the path of the storm! Fingers crossed you don’t lose power.

berwickswan · 04/01/2018 15:07

My family in the Triangle area of NC are reporting snow and bitter cold.
For my part, I'll reply with my experience of our storm Eleanor 2 nights ago...winds howling like lost souls from hades which brought down trees - and rocked parked so that their alarms were set off. All fucking night.

imyourgirl · 04/01/2018 15:39

Ds is very concerned the iPads are fully charged. Hmm

teaandtoast · 04/01/2018 15:44

#priorities! Grin

lettuceWrap · 04/01/2018 15:55

We are safe in rural Scotland (completely missed storm Eleanor here), but we have a number of American relatives in the firing line of Storm Grayson. The forecasts look potentially horrendous, hoping everyone is well prepared to keep safe, wam and fed for a week or two if necessary - although in areas where big snow has fallen for the first time in decades I guess people won’t have the same level of awareness as to HOW to prepare...

lettuceWrap · 04/01/2018 15:55

*warm!

NatashaRomanov · 04/01/2018 16:34

I can't imagine weather like that.
Though berwickswan's description of the wind is pretty accurate! It has picked up again here. I hate wind.

I hope everyone in Storm Grayson's path stays safe.

MrSlant · 04/01/2018 17:30

We had a power cut this week for 5 minutes and since then I've been obsessive about devices being fully charged. Priorities! Then I remembered no electricity = no internet so I've stocked up on torch batteries and good books instead.

No power for a week Shock I hope you didn't rely on electricity for your heating, or do you have one of those giant boiler/burner things in the basement that I believe everyone in America has because I watched too much Buffy?

imyourgirl · 04/01/2018 17:42

@MrSlant we do have a giant boiler in the basement! Grin

Which runs on diesel but it needs electric to work also. But we have a generator. So our heat will work (although it can't keep up with this cold so we also have two wood stoves and a fire going.)

The generator only runs one plug socket and two overhead lights, but it's more than a lot of people have. It does run the freezer and fridge though so we don't lose everything.

We can only run the generator a couple of hours a day though as it chews through petrol and we don't have much as they rationed people. And the only petrol pumps here need electric to work.

Our cooker runs on propane so we can still cook.

The worst is not having water to flush the loos or shower. And it being dark in the house.

Wind really picking up here, can't see we'll have power much longer.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/01/2018 17:50

Did you know we have a weather section on mn? you are probably going to lots of weather enthusiasts in that section.

FitBitFanClub · 04/01/2018 17:55

There are a fair few US posters on Mumsnet. It's not a British club...

Well, whilst that's technically true, as it's by far predominantly British, and we're having a fair whack of bad weather here at the moment, with our current named storms being Eleanor and Fionn, you can see why people might get confused. I think the next one here will be called Georgina.

MrSlant · 04/01/2018 18:06

I'm really not liking the idea of your storm/power loss now. It sounded a bit like an adventure at first but you lost me at not flushing the loo. Uck.

Very glad you have a giant boiler in the basement so I can carry on my generalisation of life in America. My friend in California has a pool AND a pool boy. Things like this keep me ticking along nicely. Bet you'd kill for hot weather and a pool right now.

I also second OYBBK's suggestion of coming over to the dark side, sorry weather topic, we like a bit of storm information over there and will be very jealous of your macho storm names and you can laugh at us catastrophising 4mm of snow.

DamsonGin · 04/01/2018 18:18

If your freezer packs up, can you make a snow fridge outside? (I've always wanted to do that for vodka, am still waiting patiently for that opportunity)

imyourgirl · 04/01/2018 18:24

We always do the snow fridge thing. Grin

I'd actually chop off a finger to be in Cali right now.

OP posts:
SeaToSki · 04/01/2018 18:36

Well we are at the height of it right now, high tide and water rushing across our road. Our house is about 9 ft higher, so we are nice and safe. We are going to have an ice rink tomorrow when the temperature drops. They are forecasting -3F on Friday night. I think that is about -19c (for you UK MNetters)

No power problems here yet, but the poor people on Cape Cod are sitting in the dark and cold.

SeaToSki · 04/01/2018 18:37

My DCs are all playing with all their devices plugged in so they will have 100% charge (just in case Mummy!)

imyourgirl · 04/01/2018 18:41

15-20 inches on top of this will be AngrySadShockHmmConfusedWineGin

Storm Grayson
OP posts:
MrSlant · 04/01/2018 18:44

Whoah! But it is so pretty.

Hope everything stays ok SeatoSki, how terrifying if you are in the dark as well.

Noofly · 04/01/2018 18:49

I emigrated to Scotland years ago, but I remember New England winters well! I am jealous of your location- I went to college in coastal Maine and I miss it!

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2018 18:59

The worst is not having water to flush the loos

Can you bring in snow to melt to flush the toilets?

ChristmasCakes · 04/01/2018 19:00

Oh how annoying, I got very excited about another storm there only to find we aren't even getting it

Vitalogy · 04/01/2018 19:01

Last storm they told us we were 'lowest priority.'

Hope you stay safe and warm OP.

I was reading about the power companies stopping the people in Florida from going off grid and using their own solar power after the hurricane. Bastards.

imyourgirl · 04/01/2018 19:36

Route one is underwater. Shock
