AIBU to smash up his camcorder

My DH gave me a fake lottery scratch card and videoed me secretly whilst I jumped around thinking that I had won 50 grand.

Whilst I'm not usually that gullible, It did not occur to me that he would do something so totally disrespectful to his own wife.

This really upset me when he took great joy in showing the footage to my grown up children and laughing out loud at me.

AIU to be so upset and smash his camcorder into tiny bits. He doesn't know yet what I've done!!

pranking is for dickheads. A man who laughs at his own wife is even more of a dickhead. What do you get out of this relationship?

Nevertoomuch22 · 03/01/2018 13:54

It has absolutely nothing to do with the money as this was quickly forgotten, but it is about disrespecting me to my own children (not his by the way) I will never forget the look on their faces of complete horror that he had done such a thing, and the very uncomfortable forced grin on their face of being put in such an uncomfortable situation.

Really???

It was a joke, get over it Hmm

If you acted like that in my house you would get pranked all of the time...lighten up!

constantchange · 03/01/2018 14:51

Mrs, which part is funny? The part where OP got her hopes up and then they were let down for the amusement of someone else? Yeah, hilarious!

diddl · 03/01/2018 15:00

But smashing the camcorder was a prank also, right?

So did he find that funny?

He sounds absolutely horrible.

Are you making plans to leave?

sycamore54321 · 03/01/2018 15:10

Destroying his property in anger was wrong (and wasteful to boot).

However I think he has also behaved terribly. I hate pranks and practical jokes. I have never understood what was funny about those candid camera type scenarios or pranks like this. They rely on the victim behaving in a perfectly normal, civilised way and then laughing at them for not being cynical sceptical gits who mistrust everything they hear. It is cruel and mean. Trusting in the basic human decency of others is a lovely, normal, laudable trait. Why should it be funny that a wife thought a lottery gift ticket from her husband was not a genuine gift? What reaction did she have that was so hilarious? Did she not behave exactly as expected? I genuinely don't see the humour in it and never have, even when very young I hated this type of humour.

OP you are both unreasonable. You reacted badly. But his was a premeditated planned nastiness. It really doesn't seem from this one incident that you are right for each other. Loving couples don't seek to humiliate and mock, and don't smash things in anger. Maybe it's a wake up call?

ptumbi · 03/01/2018 15:19

God this sounds horrible!

We burnt all the embarrassing footage of our DD and gave it to her DH one year for Christmas - you gave embarrassing footage to her husband?? Why? So he could laugh at her? Why would you do that to your own daughter? Angry

I hope she is NC with you! I certainly would be, if you'd done that to me.

steff13 · 03/01/2018 15:20

Do people still use camcorders?

This was my first thought when I read the thread title.

I don't think property destruction is appropriate, but I hate practical jokes. I think they're always mean-spirited.

bunbunny · 03/01/2018 18:18

Look on the bright side - I saw this on a news site recently where the recipient was given a multi million winning ticket, videoed it and then set it loose on the internet where it went viral - the elation and then the horror as they realised it wasn't real and they have been pranked.

Think it was a wife doing it to a husband but didn't read it that closely...
