To think the fireworks go on too long?

When I was a kid you'd watch Big Ben chime 12 then it would be everyone singing auld lang syne and a big group hug. Now the bloody fireworks go on for like 15 minutes (gets boring after a while) and only then auld lang syne. It's just not the same!

Love New year, the fireworks and auld Lang’s syne. But that’s because it brings me memories of my Mum and reminds me of m father who was a scot but was taken too soon for me to remember him.

How were they financed before it was a ticketed event?

The tickets are only very recent? Second year?

I have an inner battle between thinking they are awesome (and I did think last night's were) and wringing my hands about money literally going up in smoke.

uokhunni · 01/01/2018 10:32

I thought they were great! 😂 At the handwringing about people being homeless and food banks. So nobody is allowed to enjoy themselves? Ever? Fuck off!

Nanna50 · 01/01/2018 10:34

The ticket sales will have contributed but not paid for the event, it was OTT. Call me as miserable as you like but £millions going up in smoke doesn’t sit well with me when austerity is shoved down our throats and there are families who are homeless and hungry.

**I always think that if someone wanted to go on a shooting spree the best time would be bonfire night, halloween, and NYE. What better way to mask the sound of gunshots

This happened in my town. In 2016 two houses were shot at on bonfire night.

I love fireworks unfortunately here they go off all year round and often in the middle of the night and terrifies animals and elderly people.
The London ones were gorgeous I thought.

happymummy12345 · 01/01/2018 10:37

I don't think so.

TittyGolightly · 01/01/2018 11:02

Again, it’s LONDON COUNCIL TAX PAYERS that fund the London NYE fireworks. It works out as a few pennies per London resident. The rest of us get them for free.

And as a London council tax payer I'd rather that money was spent on the poor and homeless.

Awwww never miss a chance to virtue signal eh?

RedHelenB · 01/01/2018 11:37

YABU -lighten up it's a celebration!

80sMum · 01/01/2018 11:45

Well, I absolutely love the fireworks! I find them awe inspiring beautiful and I feel quite emotional watching them. I didn't mind the modern music used to accompany them either; I think it goes better with the concept of "new beginnings" than, say, classical music would.

lurchermummy · 01/01/2018 11:46

Ravenclawrealist that is my exact point! Not the cost of the fireworks but the fact it means everyone hanging around waiting for them to finish. Maybe best thing is to hear chimes on radio instead.

We were at the London fireworks right behind the Eye and I can assure you they were amazing. Thankfully couldn't hear the music at all.

Didn't queue, didn't have any issues at all. Walked in at 10.15, bag searched, wished Happy New Year by a multitude of police. Hundreds of toilets.

Here's the pic I took as they went off.

I assume they were paid for by the 100,000 tickets sold at £10 - much like any other event surely Confused

TammySwansonTwo · 01/01/2018 12:00

Last night in my area, they started at 7pm last night. Someone nearby was setting off something every five minutes that literally sounded like a bomb going off - I felt the floor shake each time. By the time midnight came round it was just constant and what felt like forever. Ooh it pisses me off.

Nanna50 · 01/01/2018 12:25

There is no way they only cost £1 million.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/01/2018 12:28

Actually just looked it up - they cost 3.8mn last year. Paid for by tickets, sponsorship, and London tax payers (I'm a London tax payer)

Bargain! So many tourists near me last night - they were thrilled.

It's the organisation and friendliness of the security/police/st johns ambulance that really show London off though.

Nanna50 · 01/01/2018 12:36

I'm genuinely pleased that you and others enjoyed them, and I wouldn't want to spoil that memory. Nothing will change my mind that the money is needed elsewhere though and next week the government will be telling us how there is no money in the pot. Hmm

TittyGolightly · 01/01/2018 12:41

Perhaps you could read up on how government funding works in this country.

TittyGolightly · 01/01/2018 12:41

Gorgeous pic, Laurie!

uokhunni · 01/01/2018 12:43

Get a grip of yourself Nanna, I take it you skipped Christmas entirely and just selflessly donated all your time and money to all those less fortunate?

Nanna50 · 01/01/2018 12:55

hunni yep that’s right so to use you’re own turn of phrase you can fuck off now.Biscuit

uokhunni · 01/01/2018 13:00

I'm sure you did Nanna😂

How many kids have you spawned that take up valuable resources away from all the "poor people" ?

Nanna50 · 01/01/2018 13:06

None hunni

blueskypink · 01/01/2018 13:11

Wow hunni - you really are unpleasant. If you disagree with someone try putting forward a cogent alternative POV. Works better than insults.

uokhunni · 01/01/2018 13:16

No love, I just hate all the virtue signalling shit posters like you spout. Oh "won't someone think of the poor?" And sucking joy out of everything for those of us who didn't make poor life choices.

Nanna - high 5 - neither did I - guess we have something in common after all!
