To think the fireworks go on too long?

When I was a kid you'd watch Big Ben chime 12 then it would be everyone singing auld lang syne and a big group hug. Now the bloody fireworks go on for like 15 minutes (gets boring after a while) and only then auld lang syne. It's just not the same!

We were up at the top of the royal mile, and two idiots brought their dogs!!! My dh went over to help keep the dogs calm, it was so sad to think that the dogs owners could think that was a good idea, it spoiled the fireworks for me.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2018 00:54

Just finished where I am House. Doesn't bother me that much. I knew it would be like this, but it's not just NYE. It's the run up to Bonfire Night and even Halloween these days.

Flumpernickel · 01/01/2018 00:55

redtoothbrush the OP was referring to the london fireworks, hence my response get a grip. Ffs.

Happy new year Hmm HTH.

Stolenchoccies · 01/01/2018 00:55

Oh I thought you meant locals.

My area has loads going off now...I would have thought they would have done them all at 12!

How large a box have they got?

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2018 00:55

Actually still going on here.

youngestisapsycho · 01/01/2018 00:58

They were brilliant.... there is money being wasted everywhere in this country, can’t blame a few fireworks!!

TheSnowballFairy · 01/01/2018 00:58

The London ones were great! 🎆🎇

YADBU but Happy New Year anyway Grin

Flumpernickel · 01/01/2018 00:59

Anywaaay, as I have zero intention of kicking off new year with a MN bunfight, I bid you all adieu, and wish you all the very best for 2018!

OvO · 01/01/2018 01:02

I've just moved house (just before Christmas) and this year had a view looking down on all of Edinburgh with the castle centre stage - was amazing! We stood at the back door and could hear all the bangs and shrieks.

Watching on the telly leaves me bored though, so yanbu.

Judydreamsofhorses · 01/01/2018 01:04

We spent the bells and the next 20 minutes in our bedroom, in the dark, trying to soothe our poor cat. They started on and off from about 8pm here.

myrtleWilson · 01/01/2018 01:08

We're not near any major fireworks but our cats seem unfazed by the ones that go off... but wobetide anyone who opens the cupboard to get out the tinfoil - they scarper like crazy before an inch of foil has been torn...

RoseWhiteTips · 01/01/2018 01:21

The fireworks at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay party were the most beautiful I have ever seen them. Just wow.

ohtheholidays · 01/01/2018 01:26

As long as they're finished by 2-3 in the morning I don't mind them, our Dogs aren't 2 bad,the Rabbits ignore them and so does the cat and our youngest has fell asleep despite all of the noise thankfully.

Helpotron3000 · 01/01/2018 01:26

Neighbours started the fireworks at 6pm and we weren't prepared with the terrified dog because we thought we had another few hours

Rollercoaster1920 · 01/01/2018 01:29

The London show is possibly the best use of public money to keep London and the uk's 'brand' well thought of across the globe.

Today I've watched a few international city NYE fireworks shows and London's show and coverage is great in my opinion. Sydney is also good but lacking any people to have the human scale to it.

RavenclawRealist · 01/01/2018 01:30

I don't mind the length really but i do think it should be Big Ben chimes then auld lang syne then the fireworks but I maybe an old fart 😂 the display was good then

It's on and off here from November to mid January.Angry

Worst thing is you don't know if it's a gun shot or a firework half of the time. And I'm in England not America (and nowhere near a farmer - just lots of stupid gangster wannabes)

HopefullyAnonymous · 01/01/2018 01:39

This years fireworks celebrated 100 years of the vote for women, with all female singers as I understand.

YABU.

If people queued up for 7 hours to watch them, how did they wee?

There are portaloos.

TittyGolightly · 01/01/2018 09:26

The fireworks are paid for by London council tax payers - the rest of us get them for free. It’s a ticketed event these days.

Best NYE is in Reykjavik, where there are no organised displays and display grade fireworks are sold by the fire service to the public to raise money. Fireworks are set off all evening, with a massive let off at midnight which lasts hours, and there are still
Odd fireworks being set off at 7 and 8am (its only light for 4 hours a day in December). It’s a wonderful sight and an community occasion.

MNers could learn a lot from Iceland!

KenAdams · 01/01/2018 09:32

Lol at people thinking a firework display is where public money is wasted. If only you knew!

blueskypink · 01/01/2018 09:35

display grade fireworks are sold by the fire service to the public

Really??!!!!! Is that not very dangerous?

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 01/01/2018 10:15

Fireworks have really lost their appeal for me because they go off way too much where I live. If people stuck to the traditional dates and times rather than letting them off randomly weeks either side, it would be OK. Last night they started at around 17:00, peaked at around 23:45 (why then rather than at midnight?!) and continued for a good half hour. Once I thought it was over at about 00:45 I turned in, but was then woken up at 02:30 when some twat let off 3 very loud ones. If they just went off at midnight like they used to they'd feel more meaningful and less intrusive. Still, I suppose the good thing about staggering them going off is that A&E isn't bombarded by maimed people all at the same time.

Worst thing is you don't know if it's a gun shot or a firework half of the time
I always think that if someone wanted to go on a shooting spree the best time would be bonfire night, halloween, and NYE. What better way to mask the sound of gunshots.
