When one hears that NYE party is frigging FANCY DRESS

I'm also ready a complete Scrooge about NYE parties. But unfortunately my excuses were all countered. ("Can't leave baby that long? Bring him!" said nice hosts.) But I've suddenly heard that said nice hosts have decided to make their party frigging fancy dress. I loath fancy dress.
Someone tell me I'd not be unreasonable to pull a sickie or something?? Or otherwise, an easy costume idea. Something where a 4 month old is a good accessory.

I love fancy dress but surely if you don't want to go you just don't go? Confused

MuddlingMackem · 31/12/2017 15:00

If you wear smart suits for work, dig one out and go as a (wo)man in black from MIB, or a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. :-D

Or own clothes as a plain clothes detective. Have you seen what Laure's wearing in the new series of Spiral, and she's just gone back to work after mat leave? Doddle. Grin

You had an amazing outfit, but there was a poo explosion before you left home? Or just be honest.... Tbh the rate baby and I could get through outfits at that age and the level of sleep deprivation I would expect no one to be too offended if I didn't join in with fancy dress other than maybe in a token way.

A few years ago I also went to a fancy dress party with my 4m old ds. I really couldn't be bothered, either (though TBF I normally love fancy dress). I wore maternity clothes with a pillow shoved down the front and dressed ds in a frock and bonnet. I thought it would be extremely funny.

You would not believe how many people - including some who had last seen us only a few days previously, were utterly convinced that I was heavily pregnant and that they had been mistaken about my dc being a boy. I even got asked "Why did you name her ?" 🤦‍♀️

Ha, Bertha; I must be coming across as a complete drip. Grin

I've promised my older 3 pizza and a movie night, DH is excited about the party, and our baby is extrovert and will enjoy the attention. Plus I RSVPed and it's not the hosts fault that DH doesn't check his FB messages.

I've never liked dressing up, but I'm sure I'll enjoy the party enough, once it starts, to make up for it. I'm just being a bit of a fun sponge right now, and shall try to snap out of it.

My wardrobe is quite limited at the moment, shattered as I need easy access tops that I can breastfeed my greedy guzzler in. But I have a sewing machine so can run something up if I have a decent idea.

DH is off borrowing a Captain Hook costume from someone.

rossi I don't think I am your friend but I went to a saints and sinners fancy dress as Monica Lewinsky!

The toothpaste stain got bigger as I got drunker and I also took a copy of The Starr Report, a GAP bag and cigars which later on I decided I could swallow a la Monica. Oh dear. Ah the Good Old Days of Youth.

I am blonde and even dyed my hair dark. As a rule I hate fancy dress but got really into that one.

A friend went as Moses and got people to write commandments on an A3 pad he carried around.

Morticia Addams and baby! Black dress for you and a pencilled on mustache for baby! BiscuitSmile

Somerville · 31/12/2017 15:11

NeverUseThisName You poor thing! My DS is also 4 months, and I'm now shuddering.

Actually, having RTFT properly now, I think either the homicidal maniac or pajamas are your best bet.

ForalltheSaints · 31/12/2017 15:15

Diplomatic illness time.

EggysMom · 31/12/2017 15:16

Tell us what colour/pattern easy-access tops you have, and the Mumsnet Massive will be able to suggest something that works with one of them ...

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/12/2017 15:19

Furry onesies for all three of you - the three bears!

maggiecate · 31/12/2017 15:29

Little cardboard dragon spikes attached to the baby outfit. Badge with "Mother of... " for you

FleetwoodMacDonald · 31/12/2017 15:30

One of my friends went to a fancy dress party in his normal clothes. When people asked why, he said he was dressed up as a non-conformist Grin

aneres · 31/12/2017 15:38

Paint your finger gold - Goldfinger

Mustang27 · 31/12/2017 15:38

I'd be sooo pleased much happier in daft fancy dress than trying to glam up. Loads of ideas for mum and baby costumes online first image came as cruella and baby Dalmatian I lol'd.

maggiecate · 31/12/2017 15:38

Wilma & Pebbles Flintstone? Betty & Bam Bam? Bank robber (you) and swag bag (baby). If baby onsie can be adapted with animal ears you could be the tour guide safari/Aussie/Eskimo etc?

Fadingmemory · 31/12/2017 15:41

Go as you are. If asked, say, 'I'm a Mummy.' Grin

Whizbang · 31/12/2017 15:41

Smart office skirt and blouse, name tag - Lois Lane. Ta da! (Not so good for littl'un sadly).

AstridWhite · 31/12/2017 15:42

We have actually booked to go abroad for New Year at quite short notice rather than suffer a fancy dress party that we otherwise would have struggled to get out of! My DH absolutely detests them.

noeffingidea · 31/12/2017 15:50

If you want to go then just go in your normal clothes. I can guarantee you won't be the only ones not in fancy dress.
If you really don't want to go at all then just pretend you're sick or something.

Nquartz · 31/12/2017 16:08

Surely most people won't be in fancy dress without even a day's notice?!

I would just go in whatever you'd planned to wear and enjoy yourself.

Agerbilatemycardigan · 31/12/2017 16:21

I once wore a spotty dress and told everyone I was smallpox.

FlouncyDoves · 31/12/2017 16:27

Go as Alan from The Hangover. Bit of wool or felt pen for a beard. Pair of sunglasses. T-Shirt and jeans. Baby carrier for the kid.

Done. Piss easy and quite a good character for a fancy dress.
