When one hears that NYE party is frigging FANCY DRESS

I'm also ready a complete Scrooge about NYE parties. But unfortunately my excuses were all countered. ("Can't leave baby that long? Bring him!" said nice hosts.) But I've suddenly heard that said nice hosts have decided to make their party frigging fancy dress. I loath fancy dress.
Someone tell me I'd not be unreasonable to pull a sickie or something?? Or otherwise, an easy costume idea. Something where a 4 month old is a good accessory.

There's your costume sorted right there - bah humbug!

RhiannonOHara · 31/12/2017 14:29

Shit. Is this how much warning you've had? I'd say 'I can't get together a fancy dress costume now! I'll have to give it a miss. Will treat you to a cocktail/coffee/lunch/whatever in early Jan.'

FairyAnn · 31/12/2017 14:29

Use Wednesday's line from the Addams family...

"I'm a homicidal maniac. They look just like everyone else"

DD1 has offered me the Pippi Longstocking outfit I made her recently. An evening in pigtails and odd socks, ugh.

I'd rather stay home. But my older kids were excited about being left until 1 in the morning so I'm not allowed.

Tooth fairy and a tooth - make some wings out of cardboard for you and dress baby in a white babygro

Nacknick · 31/12/2017 14:30

You can't just announce on the day of the party that it's fancy dress! That is beyond unreasonable.

Actually, there's only one thing worse than a fancy dress party, and that's a fancy dress party WITHOUT a theme!!

PaperdollCartoon · 31/12/2017 14:31

I’d go in plain clothes, it really doesn’t matter. Or the Nanny idea from a PP is also good.

EvilCleverDog · 31/12/2017 14:31

Own clothes - muggle!

Shadow666 · 31/12/2017 14:33

Oh, god yes go in your pajamas. That’s my perfect night out.

Somerville · 31/12/2017 14:33

They announced fancy dress on FB in the run up to a Christmas but I'm not in there anymore and DH managed to miss it.

Just ignore the fancy dress message, go as you were then look surprised when you get there "oh is it fancy dress? Silly me!!"
They're hardly going to send you home.

BettyTeacup · 31/12/2017 14:37

At a Halloween fancy dress party I just channelled my inner miserable bastard and went as myself. I hate fancy dress shit.

Shodan · 31/12/2017 14:41

Pin a photo of yourself, pre-baby/Dh days.

Say you thought it was a 'Come As You were' party.

MrsMotherHen · 31/12/2017 14:42

A burglar is a good diy costume.
Black jeans or leggins
Black white striped top
Black hat and mask or draw mask onto face (eyeliner maybe)
Get old white pillow case and write swag on it for your swag bag (maybe carry baby around in it)

When one hears that NYE party is frigging FANCY DRESS
Shodan · 31/12/2017 14:42

Of yourself, on yourself.

Mintychoc1 · 31/12/2017 14:43

Do you have a onesie? And does your baby have any proper "clothes" other than babygros? If so, go as each other!

Situp · 31/12/2017 14:46

Dressing gown and baby as a sheep. Shepherd. People will be so interested in him they won't care about you!

Beltane18 · 31/12/2017 14:46

so did you RSVP to a fancy dress party?

I fucking HATE fancy dress and would always find a way to say no to it. but how the hell would you sort a costume at the last minute?!

shatteredandfedup · 31/12/2017 14:48

You're looking at this the wrong way!

What clothes do you like wearing? Have you got a favourite going out dress / outfit?

What were you going to wear? Let's start with that and see if we can think of a way to accessorise it into a costume simply.

BlackBetha · 31/12/2017 14:50

Surely you can just say no if you don't want to go? And not let your children dictate to you when you're 'allowed' to be in your own house! Maybe consider a New Year's resolution to be a bit more assertive :).

MsHarry · 31/12/2017 14:53

Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus! Sheets and tea towels. Sorted.

Viviennemary · 31/12/2017 14:53

Make up a tale that somebody was lending you a great costume but there was a mix up and they lent it somebody else and you so love fancy dress parties and are really disappointed this happened. Don't say anything till you get there though.

Chrys2017 · 31/12/2017 14:56

Hilda Ogden?

QuickQuickSloe · 31/12/2017 14:56

Naice Cardigan, pearls and a cake. Christmas pudding baby grow for baby.

Mary Berry if you're blonde, Nigella if you're a brunette.

SallyGardens · 31/12/2017 14:59

Wear cocktail/evening clothes and say you thought it was "fancy dress" ie party wear not costumes.
