It's just part of a long list of things we don't agree on. I'm the sensible (boring!) practical one and he's the immature doesn't think things through one. He seems reluctant to spend any money on the house but will happily spend it on himself. We both work full time and I don't have a problem with him treating himself but whenever I suggest buying things for the house it always ends in an argument. We've lived together for 8 years and I'm fed up of this always being an issue. The carbon monoxide detector has just pushed be over the edge! I'll end up getting one myself (and fitting it, that's another thing, he doesn't do diy) but I feel so resentful 😐

They only cost a couple of quid and stick to the wall don’t they?

How old is he?

ghostyslovesheets · 30/12/2017 20:51

they are £14 - just buy one!

Lucisky · 30/12/2017 20:52

You can buy freestanding co detectors, so no fitting needed.

Jassmells · 30/12/2017 20:52

Please buy one. My parents nearly died of CO2 poisoning. You don't even need an alarm audible one you can get visual ones that just are stickers or magnets if he doesn't want to screw one to the ceiling.

flumpybear · 30/12/2017 20:52

Why even ask? It's cheap and an absolute must just buy it and put it somewhere sensible in the house

Cherrycokewinning · 30/12/2017 20:52

I don’t have one btw- unless I had reason to think I had a requirement (rental for example) I wouldn’t particularly go out of my way to have one- it’s not essential or anything

Ginmakesitallok · 30/12/2017 20:52

Just get one - really not worth discussion never mind argument!

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 30/12/2017 20:53

Just buy one, it’s like saying you don’t need a smoke alarm.

Heratnumber7 · 30/12/2017 20:53

Is there a reason why you might need one? Do you have something carbon monoxide generating in the house?

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/12/2017 20:54

Do you use gas, wood burning or anything else that 'burns'? If you don't, you don't need one.

ghostyslovesheets · 30/12/2017 20:54

OP probably has a boiler

SparklyMagpie · 30/12/2017 20:55

I'd go and buy one,I wouldn't risk it, you just never know do you?

I have one our boiler man put on for us when he was doing has checks, feel so much safer just knowing it's there

ghostyslovesheets · 30/12/2017 20:55

which is I think why people get them as well - I don't have one I get my boiler serviced annually

SparklyMagpie · 30/12/2017 20:56

*gas not has

hairypaws · 30/12/2017 20:58

Please buy one asap. My neighbour died in her armchair because of carbon monoxide poisoning.

AntiHop · 30/12/2017 20:58

It's a no brainer isn't it? It could save your life.

Fairylea · 30/12/2017 20:58

Every home should have one. I think they are essential. Think how awful he’d feel if you didn’t have one and something happened!

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/12/2017 21:00

Sorry but it would have to be a gas boiler, no? An electric boiler wouldn't produce CO. That's why I asked if she has gas.

CO is produced by incomplete combustion. So something (wood, gas, oil) has to be combusting in your house. I don't have gas/wood etc. so don't have one.

Cherrycokewinning · 30/12/2017 21:02

You don’t get electric boilers do you? Just.... PowerPoints

Jasmine29 · 30/12/2017 21:02

Wow I wasn't expecting so many quick replies, thank you. I'll just get one, sorry just wanted to vent. We have a gas boiler and gas hob. It's our first house and are both learning about these things. He's 7 years older than me (38) but acts a lot younger. His attitude seems to be oh we don't need to worry about that, you're overeating. I am more of a worrier than him, but usually, I believe within reason.

He needs a kick up the bum about several things!

Thanks for taking time to reply.

Boiler? Gas fire? Gas cooker? Wood burner?

Most houses have at least one of these!!

Op I'm with you. For me it's as important as a smoke alarm. The only difference being, if you don't have a smoke alarm you might be alerted by smell, heat, sound maybe. For carbon monoxide you wont be alterted - you will get seriously ill or die before you detect it without a monitor.

MongerTruffle · 30/12/2017 21:04

You don’t get electric boilers do you?

You can actually get electric boilers, although they are rare. It wouldn't be very wise to get an electric boiler in the UK where electricity is three times more expensive than gas.

Cherrycokewinning · 30/12/2017 21:04

Oh that’s what I was wondering because our first house we weren’t really interested in stuff like that. It took a while before all the responsibilities and tasks settled in

Nquartz · 30/12/2017 21:04

We have a gas boiler & wood burner so have 2. Buy one & put it next to the boiler, he might not even notice

CurbsideProphet · 30/12/2017 21:05

We have a log burner and have a feee standing carbon monoxide monitor that we check regularly. Why would he whinge about something that can save your life? Confused
