To be sick of the smell of our Neighbour's weed?

I did not smoke weed. Never have. But I don't have a rigid or judgemental attitude towards it. Each to their own and all that. But I live with my partner and adult daughter (none of us smoke) in a flat, and the stench of weed from the flat below is so strong - it wakes me and my partner up at night. In the morning our whole flat stinks of it. We rent our flat but the people below us own theirs. They only moved in a couple of months ago and this is when the problem started.

Before that, the flat owners before obviously smoked weed (if they were in their garden and we had our windows opened we could smell it). But this wasn't a problem. But now, with our windows shut and our whole home stinking of weed it feels horrible to me. AIBU to ask them to tone it down? I hate falling out with neighbours....

How much weed would they be smoking to be having this effect? I woke up this morning at 7am and the smell in my bedroom is overwhelming!!

Speak to your landlord.

Speak to the police although I'm not sure they would take action.

They could be growing it if the smell is very strong?

I had the same situation and the landlord arranged someone to come and work out how it was coming into my flat. It turned out there were massive gaps around all the pipes, meaning it was coming straight up. They filled everywhere with expanding foam, then boxed some in and it stopped the problem. It may be worth having a good look in/under cupboards in the kitchen, and all around the bathroom as well as any storage cupboards as these were the main areas with the issue here.

You could actually see it in the air here, my kitchen was actually smokey to look at! I showed the maintenance guy the pictures and he was shocked.

Sounds like they are growing it too. I’d tell them to get rid of it I can’t bear the smell of it I couldn’t wake up to that every day

YANBU. I would not like that either. Hope your husband gets on ok and your neighbours are reasonable people. Otherwise I think the suggestions to speak to your landlord are good.

Update: thanks everyone. My DP knocked on his door. He's a prison officer and quite big and burley. The neighbour was obviously stoned and terrified and admitted straight away what he had been doing. He apologised and they have agreed that he will only smoke weed in his garden now so that should sort it!

Definitely sounds like they are growing it if you can smell it that strongly with windows closed. Hopefully they will do something about it after your OH has spoken to them. If not then maybe call the police, although I understand it’s very awkward to get a neighbour into trouble when you have to live closely to them. I sometimes smoke it myself but my neighbours on either side do too and none of us smoke it enough to make the other’s houses smell
