Stolen Christmas gift

TrashMonkee · 28/12/2017 19:43

Obviously I have name changed
I have received a superdry hoodie from a relative for Christmas which is a bit small for me and I could probably do with the next size up. The relative has left the labels in so I was planning on taking it to my nearest store next week to see if I could change it for a bigger size. However I have now discovered that the relative has actually bought this online and then reported it as not delivered and got a second one which he gave to his sister. Mine is definitely the one reported missing.
So would the people in the shop know that it was reported missing if I went in to get a different size? I really like the hoodie and would never have known it was reported missing if it fit well.
What should I do? Am I a terrible person for wanting to keep it (and change it to a size that fits me)?

I shouldn't have thought so.

WorraLiberty · 28/12/2017 19:46

I wouldn't risk it.

Imagine the embarrassment of being marched into the back of the store by security, if there's a note on the computer?

CantChoose · 28/12/2017 19:51

I very much doubt they would have any kind of alert for it. I would ask the relative not to buy you anything in future.
Personally I'd return it to the store and explain and ask them to keep it as I'd want nothing to do with it. But I'm probably too honest...

Idontevencareanymore · 28/12/2017 19:51

Hmm I know Next haversion barcodes in their items to define per item. I've no experience with super dry but that's something I'd maybe look for? It's usually underneath the little size and care tag inside.

TrashMonkee · 28/12/2017 19:51

worra that’s a good point.
I’ll just hit the gym in January and it should fit better then.

A friend gave me a pair of jeans a girl had given her bf. I took it to the store to see if I could exchange it, they scanned it and could tell me it wasn’t bought at that branch so I wouldn’t risk it, OP.

HappyAndRelaxed · 28/12/2017 19:56

Have you told your relative yet you know it's stolen?

CurryWorst · 28/12/2017 19:57

Imagine the embarrassment of being marched into the back of the store by security, if there's a note on the computer?

Do you really think that is in any way possible?

harrietsoton · 28/12/2017 19:59

Some stores may not accept returns without a receipt- was it superdry’s website or another retailer?

If you do have the receipt/invoice then it will definitely flag as already refunded and the staff will be suspicious of fraud

Personally I would leave it

JaneEyre70 · 28/12/2017 20:16

I'm sorry but I'd hand it back and say if you can't get me a gift honestly, I'd rather go without. That's theft OP, and I expect the courier has been made to pay for it Hmm.

TheRottweiler · 28/12/2017 20:27

So you are happy to accept stolen goods as a present.

Good grief.

Morals of an ally cat.

WorraLiberty · 28/12/2017 20:47

Curry I can't say 100% but I wouldn't take the risk.

It's so easy to input data into systems now, so who's to say the number of the 'missing' item wasn't logged to stop a it being exchanged for cash?

I don't know.

BusterGonad · 28/12/2017 20:53

I honestly can't think of a reason they'd know, it will have the same barcode of every hoodie in that style and size, they would know when they last sold a hoodie of that size and colour but not if it was that actual one. E.g. Med blue hoodie barcode 1234 (for every medium blue hoodie) they'd have no clue yours was declared missing. I'm am 99.9% sure if this.

StrawBasket · 28/12/2017 20:55

I doubt that the shop has a record of every single item they sold. They usually accept to exchange for a different size even without receipt. You are not asking for cash.

We just need someone working for Superdry to clarify.

WorraLiberty · 28/12/2017 21:00

Ahh yes good point.

I still wouldn't risk it though. Mainly because I'm a chicken Blush

EvansOvalPies · 28/12/2017 21:04

I would return the item to the relative, politely explain that you'd like to exchange it for a different size but don't have the necessary receipt, and see how they respond. ie, could they either provide you with the required receipt, or exchange it for you. (Or buy you a new one, in your size Xmas Grin)

DotCottonDotCom · 28/12/2017 21:09

The barcode will be the same as the rest in the shop. It won’t identify the dodgy transaction.
If you didn’t know this you’d take it back anyway.

As long as you are going in with just the tagged hoodie and haven’t got a receipt, there’s no way to pin it all together.

Originalfoogirl · 28/12/2017 21:10

I would return it to the retailer and tell my relative never to get me a gift again. That would pretty much be the last thing I’d want to say to them.

lanbro · 28/12/2017 21:15

Superdry have a really lax returns policy, you'd be fine. Morally you probably shouldn't but I would.

I returned 2 faulty coats to Superdry, totally over £200. No receipt or proof of purchase, although were genuinely bought there, and they exchanged both no problem. They actually didn't have the exact replacements so we got loads of stuff to the total of the original transaction!

CombineBananaFister · 28/12/2017 21:19

I dont understand why this is so acceptable these days? YANBU at all, but I'd be seriously pissed off with someone who did this and tell them so. It's stolen goods. We had a right nightmare last week when my sons medication genuinely didn't arrive from Sweden because of this type of fraud Sad

Floralnomad · 28/12/2017 21:20

I’d return it to the relative and tell them you need the next size up .

LockedOutOfMN · 28/12/2017 21:23

Quite horrified that your relative thinks it's ok to do this - the courier has actually paid for your hoodie now - and also to pass on the stolen goods as a gift to someone else. I would return it to the giver, or to the store.

LightastheBreeze · 28/12/2017 21:28

I’m also thinking to tell the relative it’s the wrong size then they will have to deal with it

Thebluedog · 28/12/2017 21:31

I know that Next can scan the bar code of an item and they know it was delivered to me via my next account and credit my account
(When I return an item I store? Without me uttering a word. So they may know it was sold online to your relative and also know it’s been reported as not delivered.

Maryz · 28/12/2017 21:32

I'm a bit Hmm at the question.

Looking at the title of this thread, I presumed the question would relate to some sort of condemnation of a theft. Not a question about how to take advantage of one.

I'm a bit surprised at the "helpful" replies too [baffled]
