DS Desperately Seeking Cath Kidston flannel

Tenuous AIBU at best but ......

AIBU to ask you lovely lot to find a Cath Kidston flannel? Red and white spots.

DS has had 'flannel' since a baby, he took it everywhere and sleeps with it. It's now reduced to a shameless bundle of germs (see photo). It's now discontinued and intermittent trawls of eBay have so far been fruitless.
Current 'flannel' is on its last knockings and I'd love to find him a new/old/half of 'flannel's relative.
For context, DS is 9 and I know some people will say 'just let flannel die!' but DS has had to deal with quite a lot of loss in his 9
years (my parents (their very loved and doting GP's) died suddenly and unexpectedly, then his other, and last, grandmother died, our lovely dog got run over and died and then recently his doted on and cared for gerbils died).
He's a lovely, kind boy who has dealt with life's hurdles admirably and I just would like to get him a new (old) flannel, before this one gets lost (it's essentially a tiny rag) or just falls apart.
The flannel was red with white spots with a label in the corner. It doesn't mind on the condition if anyone has one lurking at the back of their airing cupboard or is cleaning the windows with it? I will happily buy it from you.

I've name changed for this but been here since DS was a baby - so ten old years!

It looks like a brown reindeer in the image?

Are you saying that it is just a red and white spotty cath kidston flannel?

RedHelenB · 28/12/2017 18:06

Could you frame the bit you have for him to keep on his bedroom?

AgentProvocateur · 28/12/2017 18:06

I had this one until about six months ago. I got it for my 40th nine years ago, and eventually had to throw it out. Sorry.

CathKidstonFlannel · 28/12/2017 18:09

Rudolph yes, I know, it looks disgusting! It honestly used to be a face cloth with this pattern.

That's a good idea RedHelen But he won't hear of it, even in it's diminished state, he won't let it go.

Agent that's a shame, I should have done this sooner.

Thanks everyone for your replies though.

Can you stitch the remains onto a new flannel, then he can still hold/smell it but it's a bit more robust?

SciFiFan2015 · 28/12/2017 18:17

Could you take a tiny bit of that and sew it inside something new(er) that your DS picks? Then frame the rest as a PP suggested.

ShinyMe · 28/12/2017 18:18

I still have my scrap of 'blanket' from 45 years ago. It's a filthy black germ ridden rag, but I wouldn't dream of getting rid of it and the idea of losing it gives me the shudders. It's very very fragile though and isn't useable in any format. What worked for me though, about 15 years ago when it started disintegrating, is wrapping my blanket carefully in a lovely soft big white cotton hankie, and loving it THROUGH the hankie so I could still smell it but it wouldn't fall apart any more than it was already. I've since weaned myself off it and the hankie-wrapped-blanket lives in my t shirt drawer and only comes out in an emergency. The hankie is a bit yellow but is still strong and whole and blanket is safe inside.

Maybe contact the seller of this one: Cath Kidston Little Spot Blue Face Cloth Flannel www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01KACM0WS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_jxtrAbW7EDQEX?tag=mumsnetforum-21

CathKidstonFlannel · 28/12/2017 18:20

NannyR that's what I would do if I could find another, that's the tricky issue. Cath Kidston have discontinued them and I can't find one.

CathKidstonFlannel · 28/12/2017 18:24

SciFiFran he won't let me - with the, slightly jaded but still alive, optimism of youth, he thinks this tiny rag will go on forever! Despite being a bright boy and realising it used to be big and now is tiny.
He's just loved it so much it's gone to nothing.

Could you get away with a a CK tea towel in the same print...

Knittedfairies · 28/12/2017 18:27

Could you contact Cath Kidston to explain your dilemma? They might have one lurking somewhere..

CathKidstonFlannel · 28/12/2017 18:28

ShinyMe that's the thing. It's the smell and essence of it. DD has things she's 'attached' to and are precious to her but not in the same way that DS has with 'flannel', he takes it everywhere despite my constant 'but DS it will get lost!'. It's going to become just a thread very shortly and I was in two minds about letting that happen but thought I'd post here as a last shot in the dark.

Thanks Vivienne I'll have a look. Harriet yes that's a good idea.
It was particularly the label on flannel that made it special, in the way tat more modern comforters do, the shiny/difference in texture of the label.

Thank you all for the good suggestions.

NannyR · 28/12/2017 18:32

Does he actually have to have a new spotty cloth though if it's the smell and essence of the original that he's attached to? Could you not just sew the original onto a plain washcloth or tie it up in a hanky as the PP suggested?

Nikkynakkynoo · 28/12/2017 18:34

I think I have one of these! Will need to check the airing cupboard...if i do its a wash mitt rather than a flannel, will that matter?! (Can't guarantee it's still there...DH is prone to clear outs of such things!)

Rossigigi · 28/12/2017 18:35

I say contact Cath Kidston- tweet maybe? I'm sure they will have one lurking, if not, maybe tweeting you will get more coverage and a tweeter may have one?

labazs · 28/12/2017 18:38

i have just spent 20 mins going thru loads of sites but no luck i have a few suggestions put a plea on local fb selling sites? get some fabric make several flannels so you have spares?

gravyonaplane · 28/12/2017 19:13

I'm 45 and have a similar piece of rag that I fondly call 'hanky' - it is disintegrating and disgusting and I shall never be parted from it. Mine is now tied (and has been for about 30 years) inside another handkerchief and they live under my pillow in case of emergencies 💷

CathKidstonFlannel · 28/12/2017 19:24

Nikky if you did god it that would be great, thank you.

OP posts:
CathKidstonFlannel · 28/12/2017 19:26

NannyR I'll suggest that to him, it's a good idea and would help preserve what little is left.

OP posts:
CathKidstonFlannel · 28/12/2017 19:31

Rossi That's a great suggestion but I'm such an old Luddite! I tried Twitter once and just couldn't work out what on earth was going on!

Thank you Labbas.

Gravy I wish now he'd got attached to an animal because at least they have a bit of body to them and wouldn't be loved away.

I've tried to put it in a little muslin bag before but he took it out because 'it just wasn't the same'.
