Taking the tree down!

Is it wrong to consider taking the tree down tomorrow? When is everyone else doing it?? I think last year I did it just after Boxing Day. As the kids get older the presents seem to get bigger and I end up having to rearrange the whole room. Need that tree gone. Does that make me a grinch?

juliesaway It’s a symptom of an immoral society (...)

I think that's going a bit far.

It's more a symptom that there are two festivals celebrated at this time of year. One is entirely secular and is celebrated from mid-November to 26th December. The other is religious and is celebrated from 24th December to 6th January. The two festivals share the same name and both use the evergreen tree symbol but we shouldn't judge it as immoral for someone to only be interested in the secular version and not observe the celebration of the 12 days.

juliesaway · 26/12/2017 06:07

What’s not to like about celebrating the 12 days of Christmas? You get more Christmas! Those celebrating Christmas in early December are celebrating at the wrong time to be honest!

Oblomov17 · 26/12/2017 06:23

When are they supposed to come down?
Is it Jan 4th? Or which date?

I seriously can't comprehend why anyone would want to take it down on Boxing Day. Seriously? And all the decorations aswell? How miserable! AngryHmm

juliesaway · 26/12/2017 06:30

Oblomov17 some folks on this thread took their tree and decorations down on CHRISTMAS DAY! After all, Santa’s been, it’s over.

Battleax · 26/12/2017 06:30

On 6th Jan (Epiphany aka Twelfth Night) Ob

DonutDiv · 26/12/2017 06:32

This is baubly bonkers.

ElizaDontlittle · 26/12/2017 06:52

12th night.
If you celebrate Christmas in Advent... then maybe you have had enough of Christmas by Christmas, which is a real shame I think.

Plenty of people with faith do it too - I think it's very much driven by schools and shops. And toys - bought for Christmas - and a child's clamour - leading to not wanting to celebrate the season of Christmas because you're done with it - sums it up I'm afraid. But it's entirely your choice.

Our local church school tree came down on the last day of term, the caretaker was hard at work doing it when I walked past that night.

FluffyWuffy100 · 26/12/2017 07:43

I keep it up for New Year at least. I spent £80 fucking quid on the tree.... I need more time to enjoy it!

noeffingidea · 26/12/2017 08:02

Its a symptom of an immoral society to take the tree down this early. One of the strangest things I've read on here. What has a christmas tree got to do with morals?

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 08:11

I agree with Mrscog it's a matter of whether you're religious or not. I think that's what determines whether you take your decs down before new year or not and how you look at advent etc.

DeadButDelicious · 26/12/2017 08:11

It’s a symptom of an immoral society to take the tree down this early, along with attending shops in Boxing Day. Crass commercialism driving people’s behaviour.

😂😂😂 Oh thank you! I really needed a laugh.**

I didn't realise tiny living room + unruly 1 year old + cats = immoral society.**

I took mine down last night! Bah humbug! Smile

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 08:12

Also if you're religious you put them up later ans if you're not like me they're up on the 1st so have already been to a month when I take them down

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 08:12

and

Having the full week off between Xmas and New Year is an unusual privilege

I finished work at 11pm on the 23rd. I've worked straight days and evenings from the 3rd December.

I'm now not back until 9th January. In fact, most people I know are not back until 2nd/3rd January.

I wasn't aware it was such a rare privilege.

kaytee87 · 26/12/2017 08:26

Also if you're religious you put them up later

Nope, mine goes up the first weekend in December and down around the 2nd/3rd January.

LoniceraJaponica · 26/12/2017 08:27

I haven't worked between Christmas and New year for years.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/12/2017 08:38

I've always taken them down on the 6th (12th night) - I really want to take them down on the 1st this year as dh is still here to help me put them away and do the cleaning and tidying.

All the bloody schools go back on the 2nd! Shortest Christmas holiday ever, dh will have had 7 working days off!

kaytee87 · 26/12/2017 08:40

@Kursk that's bonkers

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 08:44

My mistake I always thought the 12 days of Christmas decides when people put up and take down when religious

juliesaway · 26/12/2017 08:44

I’m off til 8 Jan here as are millions in Australia ( to be fair it is our long summer holiday too). Still think it’s disgusting to take your Christmas tree down on Christmas Day and yes, I do think it’s a symbol of all that’s wrong with society.

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 08:44

Just I've encountered alot of religious people thinking in about to get struck down because I put my decs up on 1st and take them done before new year!!
