To have ring fenced the Christmas food?!

Got all the Christmas food yesterday. DH wants to dive straight in and start eating the pate, cheeses, crackers etc. Kids want to open the box of chocolates.

AIBU to want to save the food for Christmas Day onwards? Confused

What's the general view here?!
It just doesn't seem an occasion if by the time 25th rolls around you've eaten all the best stuff to me.

We usually start the Friday before xmas as DH will have finished for xmas and xmas eve is one long buffet. However, he has been away from home yesterday and today and won't get back until tomorrow lunchtime, so we're not digging in until tomorrow evening.

We don't eat things like xmas cheese or any of the meats etc, but will have a go at the crisps, chocolates, biscuits, nuts, crackers (just with normal cheese though.) I buy extra wine, beer etc as well so we can enjoy it.

Equally though, we try not to go too mad as then we don't enjoy the xmas dinner as much if we're sluggish from eating too much the day before.

OliviaStabler · 23/12/2017 17:10

We start Christmas Eve but I make sure not all the goodies go in the first 24 hours!

Ginkypig · 23/12/2017 17:12

Having not read the thread (yet) I can say in my Christmas house dp finished work yesterday, the (adult) kids arrived to stay for the week so Christmas has started and we have tentatively started the Christmas food. snacks and alcohol

It's to last the week the kids are here (and there is plenty enough to last that long!) though so if they all demolish what's there then unless they replace it they don't get more Grin

Ginkypig · 23/12/2017 17:18

Ok I suppose that I should add the caveat that all food that is designated for the main meals and Christmas dinner itself is obviously off limits until that particular meal is served because am I buggery going out to the shop to replace it! Any leftovers are fair game though.

ImtheChristmasCarcass · 23/12/2017 17:18

Ha! I used to have to do the same thing. My DH was so bad (and involved the kids in his food raiding) that I used to have to put red stickers on all the 'forbidden' food and dinner ingredients. The kids are grown, DH has learnt better and those days are long gone now.

We're starting the 'food frenzy' today with a steak BBQ. The nuts and sweets won't come out until tomorrow though. Neither of us have much self control when they're staring us in the face. Out of sight, out of mind!

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 23/12/2017 17:21

It's feasting at ours from now until New Year.

RainyDayBear · 23/12/2017 17:23

We’ve started today (with the exception of food specifically for Christmas Day breakfast and tomorrow nights buffet. My lunch today involved the Christmas crisps, homous, artichoke, fancy break and rum and raising truffles. It was bloody glorious!

There’s only two of us (DD is 23 months) so we’ll end up with loads left over if we don’t start now.

RainyDayBear · 23/12/2017 17:24

Argh, bread and raisin.

Despite appearances I haven’t been at the Christmas baileys!!

thethoughtfox · 23/12/2017 17:28

We buy party food type things especially for Christmas eve. My birthday is the week before Christmas so we've been mainlining birthday cake and chocolate sine then!

PinkBuffalo · 23/12/2017 17:28

YABU
Christmas officially started yesterday when I got home from work!

EB123 · 23/12/2017 17:31

Christmas Eve here. It feels wrong to start earlier!

glitterlips1 · 23/12/2017 17:39

We just eat it. I have already polished off a box of celebrations. The baileys is staring at me but I usually like to start that on Christmas Eve when I do some wrapping but I have mostly done it all this year!

SweetIcedTea · 23/12/2017 17:40

I don't buy huge amounts of treat food, so with the exception of the Christmas cake that was started yesterday, Christmas food starts on Christmas Eve here.

Jux · 23/12/2017 17:42

We don't start until Christmas day, but we don't even put the tree up and decorate until Christmas Eve (and it all comes down on 12th Night, too).

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/12/2017 17:44

Open on the day school breaks up is the rule here, except for the cheese, I have strange control issues when it comes to cheese, but cheese is my thing.
Anything fewer than 15 types is a bad show.

Sofabitch · 23/12/2017 17:45

Dh has 4 days off starting now. So the food starts now....except we actually had cheese and crackers for dinner last night.

Dhs mum was a not until christmas day kinda person. And he has zero self control. Id rather nibble a few bits of several days

Mummaofboys · 23/12/2017 17:53

Haha! You sound like me I won’t let anybody touch the Christmas food until Christmas Eve lunch time, it will taste better if they wait, well that’s what I tell my husband and kids.

TriskaiDeckTheHallsia · 23/12/2017 17:59

Anything fewer than 15 types is a bad show.

Can I come to your house please? Xmas Grin Cheese is life.

octonaught · 23/12/2017 18:00

I've already started on mince pies and chocs yesterday
Xmas lunnch is at my sister's and I've bought all the cheese so won't be eating that till the day.
I've also bought stuffing balls, sausages in bacon (all the trimmings, no turkey) so will will cook those as a treat for me & DS tomorrow.

There is not enough time or stomach space on the 25th. This year is a 4 day Xmas fest, let's be honest, so let your poor salivating family srat now, as look as you have what you needs for the main meal on monday

BusyBeez99 · 23/12/2017 18:03

We've started on it today. DH back at work Wednesday and I will be size of a house if he leaves me with all this food to graze on!

Redsippycup · 23/12/2017 18:05

Ha! I'm doing Xmas day for my family for the first time this year, we did the shop last night. I unpacked it all and then announced to DP that he can only eat food from the top shelf of the fridge Grin

Luckily our usual food is cheese and bread and stuff, so we won't be starving till monday!

problembottom · 23/12/2017 18:08

I'm working for another hour or so. As soon as I finish I'm diving into the cheese and crackers!

neveradullmoment99 · 23/12/2017 18:12

You cant really eat everything on xmas day so I dont see the point in keeping everything. I have eaten a packet of salt and vinegar peanuts and some smoked parma ham. At the same time, i do not feel like going for another food shop between now and xmas day!!!! So i select things that can be eaten/to drink. Not bothered about the drink to be honest [ non alcoholic stuff] as it can be easily replaced. I havent bought much in the way of alcohol as I am not fussed for it. I do like a baily's though and amaretto and have had a bit of both!

TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 23/12/2017 18:12

It's mine and DH's wedding anniversary today, I might dive into the cheese selection. 😀

sinceyouask · 23/12/2017 18:14

It's not allowed in our house to start before Christmas eve, after that you can eat what you please and when.
Drinking definitely starts today though!
