What extra food do you buy for Christmas?

My DH are having an argument, he says we don’t have much christmas food in. He was recalling memories of childhood going to the cupboard and having chocolates and nibbles.

Other than the Christmas dinner what ‘extras’ do people buy?

Smoked salmon, cheeseboard, gherkins, sherry trifle, jelly tots, posh chocolates, gammon, party food, crisps, biscuits. Just realised we've got no cake!

See, I grew up with there always being nuts, chocolates, cheese footballs, nibbly bits and bobs, cheese etc in the run up to Xmas but that was when there would be me and my brother teenage/adult but living at home and then 4 grandparents would come from a fair distance so probably for about 4 or 5 days. My mum still gets tons of stuff in but now it's just her and my dad, and then our family of 5 (3 kids under 12) and possibly my brother and his son for absolute max of one and a half days. And during that time we have enormous meals so no-one has space for all those extras.

So my answer would be if you have extra people in the house for a prolonged period you may use stuff like that, otherwise it's likely to sit around until February....

I really don't get smoked salmon at all. Well I don't like sushi either let it be said!

I have been known to throw scraps into scrambled eggs just to get rid of it (was gifted with good grace, never bought by me) and still didn't like it at all. It is very smelly I think, and it feels raw in my gob.

But each to their own.

A huge amount. I buy it but I hate it. My dh has memories of not having much throughout the year and his parents not taking much notice of birthdays, but his father would come back from shopping at Christmas with a car laden with food, crisps, chocolates. So Christmas here has to be large quantities of nibbles, chocolates, pickles, hams, turkey, cake, drinks. The trouble is I’m quite healthy throughout the year but once I get a taste for chocolates and crisps I probably eat more than anyone😥. I also do all my food shopping on line as going to the supermarket and seeing the enormous quantities people buy makes me feel sick. Even though I’m one of them.

Pate
Salmon
Prawns
Crackers
Cheese inc a Camembert to bake
Single and double cream
Cake
Macaroons
Custard
Tapas
Christmas freezer food
Pickles and chutneys
Pringles
Chocolate
Nuts
Fizzy drinks
JD

Looks like a lot of things we don’t normally have in the house but I can’t wait to get stuck in —already started on the nuts, crisps and chocolate—

Well we have a tonne of stuff- homemades like Christmas Cake, mince pies, gingerbread house. Big meats, like gammon, turkey, beef, a whole poached salmon, a serrano ham leg. Several tins of sweets, many crisps/snacks, a massive cheeseboard, antipasti, fruits, salads, nuts. But... we have a huuuuuuge party on Boxing Day, where we open our house up to family, friends and neighbours, so we need lots of extra food and drink in.

On a personal level, I eat a special breakfast Xmas day (something like eggs benedict/eggs royale or maybe croissants/pastries, a roast with all the trimmings, plus Christmas pud on Xmas day. And then for as long as I can string it out, I eat cheese and biscuits, cold meats/fish, salad and pickles for as long as I can until it runs out or is past its best. Perhaps the odd mince pie or a few quality street, but I don't have a massively sweet tooth, so not really much of the sweet stuff. So I eat differently, but not necessarily worse, mostly it's about me not having to cook for a few days!

Smoked salmon, cream cheese, bagels, more cheese, chocolates, nuts, crisps, stuffed bell peppers, dips, ham that we cook in cola, Bailey's, champagne, mulled wine, mince pies, panettone, nice breads, olives and shit loads of clementines.
