What extra food do you buy for Christmas?

imjusthereforasec · 23/12/2017 10:13

My DH are having an argument, he says we don’t have much christmas food in. He was recalling memories of childhood going to the cupboard and having chocolates and nibbles.

Other than the Christmas dinner what ‘extras’ do people buy?

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 23/12/2017 11:15

snacks
milk
bread
cheese
orange juice

Wilburissomepig · 23/12/2017 11:17

Loads - far too much - chocolate, cheeses, crisps and snacks. Love it!

Tisfortired · 23/12/2017 11:17

We have tubs of celebrations and roses, a pannettone, a family box of mcvities, Yule log, Christmas pud, Terrys choc orange segments, lots of cheese and crackers and chutneys, a couple of bottles of red and white wine, two bottles of prosecco and our annual bottle of spirit (we treat ourself to a bottle every year as we rarely drink and it usually lasts the year!) this year Thomas Dakin Manchester gin.

Saying that I did the food shop this morning because DP was working and I just got the 'what on Earth did you buy at Tesco?!' Text as he has checked the joint account. I have minimal self restraint at Christmas!!

Johnnycomelately1 · 23/12/2017 11:19

Cheese, olives, salami etc, dips, coleslaw, pork pie, crisps and nuts, dates, boxed chocolates, Florentines, a ham, quiche, canapés. My mum brings homemade sausage rolls, Christmas cake and mince pies. Plus I double my alcohol order.

Littlelambpeep · 23/12/2017 11:21

I bought about four boxes or mince pies and I am a teacher so plenty of chocolate and tins of biscuits etc.

Other than the turkey and fancy sides, we do tend to eat good dinners around this long weekend so steak, duck fillets salmon etc.

Usually don't bother with a formal dessert and try and steer clear from nuts and crisps and too much junk.

Littlelambpeep · 23/12/2017 11:22

I make a large pot of mulled wine too

numbereightyone · 23/12/2017 11:22

We have a cheeseboard and biscuits, chocolates, a homemade Christmas cake, homemade Nigella chocolate salami and some fruit sparkling bottles of drink. Quite a lot of alcohol too. To be fair we have loads of fruit, veg and nuts in too.

Slartybartfast · 23/12/2017 11:23

lots of alcohol often, which doesnt necessarily always get drunk Shock

BewareOfTheToddler · 23/12/2017 11:23

We have a bit more cheese than usual. It's mostly sweet stuff - mince pies, the ingredients for a Yule log, stollen bites, panettone, some boxed chocolates, and various crisps, etc. I also plan to make a gingerbread house this weekend. I should qualify this by pointing out that a) we had a cancelled gathering a few weeks ago because of the snow so I pre-emptively bought more than I would have done just for Christmas, and b) I expect not to buy anything sweet now until February!

RainbowCookie · 23/12/2017 11:23

Nothing really, git a few chips and dips as we have people over for drinks and mince pies, but that’s it. Don’t buy random chocolates and nibbles as then we’d eat them!

MaidenMotherCrone · 23/12/2017 11:23

Lots of things because we only have them at Christmas.

Special Mead
Damson Gin (made for Christmas)
Chocolate Oranges
Matchmakers
After Eights
Pringles
Peanuts
Twiglets
Lots of nice cheeses
Different pâtés
Coca Cola
Home made:
Chocolate Orange Bundt
Vanilla Bundt
Mince Pies
Best brownies in the world
My Christmas sausage rolls

NameChanger22 · 23/12/2017 11:23

Lots of extra nibbles, cheeses, crisps, fruits, nuts, chocolates and drinks. I buy bits and bobs throughout December and spend at least double what I normally spend on my big Christmas shop. We will be eating it throughout January and February. The diet can wait until the March.

BewareOfTheToddler · 23/12/2017 11:24

Oh, and wine. More than we would normally drink but it's nice to have a choice - we don't drink much but not sure what we'll be in the mood for over the next few days.

greenapplesplatter · 23/12/2017 11:25

Obligatory bag of twiglets & cheese footballs usually bin them unopened mid March time!!

grasspigeons · 23/12/2017 11:26

We used to have nibbles and stuff out when iwas growing up
like a tin of roses, nuts, crisps, chocolate oranges just all sat on the coffee table to eat.

I don't really do that but then thinking about it, we have more of that kind of thing all year round. I only got chocolate and sweets at easter and Christmas and my birthday! My kids get things like that every week.

FurryDogMother · 23/12/2017 11:28

More varieties of cheese than usual
Satsumas
Dates
Sausage rolls
Smoked salmon
Rum, vodka, whiskey, gin, Prosecco, Cava, Champagne, red and white wines, dessert wines, sherry, cocktail ingredients
People give us chocolates
Mince pies

RaindropsAndSparkles · 23/12/2017 11:29

Loads

Christmas pudding, Yule log, mince pies, Christmas creams, crackers, flowers, candles, Turkey, ham, pork pie, cheeses, prawns, smoked salmon, salmon, anti-pasti, pickles, good bread, fruit, sausage rolls, canape pieces, crackers, chocolates, Turkish delight, fruit, veg, salad, good oil, stocked up comestibles: cereal, flour, oils, butter, sugar, etc.

But then we host from pm today until 28th. Numbers will vary from 6-10.

And we did Christmas lunch for the steps last weekend. Grown up DC here though.

Rhodiolia · 23/12/2017 11:38

I did my usual weekly shop but added a turkey crown, an extra bag of potatoes, sprouts, pigs in blankets and a box of mince pies. Also bought extra chorizo & chicken for a rice dish I make on boxing day for friends that come over.

Rhodiolia · 23/12/2017 11:38

I don't really buy snacks or anything besides what I usually get/have in. I am more likely to do that for Hogmanay.

Commuterface · 23/12/2017 11:41

Lots of different chocolates we don't have during the year; farrero rocher, Thorntons, a tub of Quality Street and Celebrations. Cheese Footballs, pringles, smoked salmon and fancy biscuits. Drinks wise it's Baileys, nice wine and coke.

greendale17 · 23/12/2017 11:42

Posh chocolates and biscuits, cheese and biscuits, smoked salmon, party food,

MissTeri · 23/12/2017 11:51

Not much extra. Dinner at mums anyway. Always have tons of crisps in the house anyway so very few extras. Only me and my son and we're both fussy eaters anyway so not much more we like at Christmas than we can get at any other time of the year anyway. Shops are only cosed one day (although local shop here open for an hour on the day), I just don't understand how/why people buy a few trolleys loads of extras, it's baffling to me.

GeekyWombat · 23/12/2017 11:58

Lots of cheese and biscuits, a tub of Cadbury's Heroes, some posh cashew nuts and a bottle of Baileys.

Otherwise that's it. There will be lots of cold meat and pickle and all that stuff but in terms of extra treats we're pretty low key.

We do have a Yule log for Boxing Day dessert (to be shared by 12 people though!)

AuntieStella · 23/12/2017 12:03

There's a fair amount of extra food:

More nibbles: twiglets, cheeselets, crisps, tree-shaped pretzels, olives

3 packs of frozen canapés

Interesting cheese and plenty of crackers

Chocolates

The wherewithal to make a trifle (which I might not get around to making)

And a Christmas pudding (don't usually bother, because I don't actually like the dratted things, so just a small one)

Chrisinthemorning · 23/12/2017 12:09

Home made Christmas cake, home made mince pies with booze cream, a cheese mountain, stand pie and a gammon.
Oh dear
