What extra food do you buy for Christmas?

My DH are having an argument, he says we don’t have much christmas food in. He was recalling memories of childhood going to the cupboard and having chocolates and nibbles.

Other than the Christmas dinner what ‘extras’ do people buy?

OP posts:
TantrumsNSprouts · 23/12/2017 12:11

We do get a lot of extra snack food, additionally to Christmas dinner.

Mince pies
Pannetone
A bit of party food for Christmas Eve, as I don't cook
Crisps and nuts for pre-Christmas dinner champagne-soaking-up Grin
One tin of chocolates for the DC (Celebations this year) and some decent chocolates for me & DH (used to get loads more, but was eating it in to January when I try to be healthy)
One box of decent biscuits
Shitloads of cheese + crackers, chutneys, grapes etc to go with it
Fizzy drinks for DC - only time they're allowed them other than on summer holidays abroad
A lot of booze. Its the only time of year we have port, sherry, mulled wine, decent champagne rather than cava/prosecco etc.

noeffingidea · 23/12/2017 13:02

Not much in our house.
We have a pudding after our Christmas dinner (probably a cheesecake, which is unusual for us). Tea is just things like sausage rolls, crisps and dips. Maybe a chocolate log or similar. Will have some sweets and maybe some mini cheddars and salted peanuts to nibble on through the day. A bottle or two of wine, something fizzy for anyone who doesn't drink.
Boxing day is normal food, though the kids will most likely have sweets left.
It's not much really but no one in our family really likes christmas food. I did the whole christmas food thing a few years ago but no one ate it, so never again. Why waste money?

ferntwist · 23/12/2017 13:05

Dates in a long box, a big bowlful of tangerines/satsumas to look all bright and cheery, some cheeses, crackers/oatcakes and pickles to nibble in the evening. Some nice nuts. A big box of Quality Street.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 23/12/2017 13:17

What have you got OP?

We (or rather I) get around three tins of chocolates (because I need them) plus a couple of smaller boxes.

Extra box of fancy biscuits...mince pies....nuts, more condiments than usual, pickles. Nicer crackers than usual, extra-posh cheese.

We're in Oz now so also have a lot of nice soft fruit. Cherries and plums...strawberries and mangoes.

ICE CREAM! I usually buy a small Christmas cake but haven't so far ...will probably cave and get one tomorrow though!

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 23/12/2017 13:20

Oh...the DC insist on a can of that awful spray cream too...for their hot chocolate!
Just remembered the nasty jellies too. They like individual jellies with fruit cocktain from a can in them. Blush

They'll eat those with Christmas Eve tea...often with icecream and spray cream too. DH is far more healthy than I am and wouldn't get half of this in.

He'll eat it all though!

JustHope · 23/12/2017 13:22

Cheese, wine, crisps, chocolate, home made mince pies

jimmyjammyjumbo · 23/12/2017 13:31

I seem to have a mountain of chocolate, kettle crisps and Pringles, cheesey snacky things, cheese (not loads), pate, crackers, the little bread that needs to be put in the oven, homemade cake, Yule log, lots of party food for Xmas eve and day night, pizzas, pickled onions, panettone, mince pies. We will basically work our way through it and is all eaten by end of New Year’s Day where we all go in a healthy eating kick.

AnnabelleLecter · 23/12/2017 13:38

DH got a hamper from work- Christmas biscuits, cake chocolates, macaroons, selection of cheeses, doormen nibbles, sweets etc. Plus a bottle of champagne and case of wine.
Extras to normal include a few desserts, fizzy pop and buffet food.
I made a Yule log yesterday.

TriskaiDeckTheHallsia · 23/12/2017 13:40

Biscuits and those tins of snacks- cheeselets, twiglets, cheese footballs etc., sometimes cheese and crackers, a box of chocolate or chocolate oranges.

Pastry to make a boxing day pie, and ingredients for a chocolate log.

We're going to parents and ILs this year so I've just made two chocolate logs and some homemade booze.

wasMissD · 23/12/2017 13:41

Cheesy nibbles, crisps, mince pies, chocolate oranges, lebkutchen, and cobs (sorry, bread rolls!) for leftover meat for evening if people are peckish. Love grazing on Christmas Day Xmas Grin

Sweetpea55 · 23/12/2017 13:42

Usually get the same stuff each year.
Quality,, Street. Walnuts and hazelnuts in shells. Turkish delight. After, 8. Lots of different cheeses. Pate. Lots of cake things for boxing day. A chocolate log Christmas pudding

Not much really, a couple of extra veg and a selection of cheese.
Ready made devils on horseback.

No chocolates/crisps/mince pies, we genuinely don't like them.
Making a lemon tart.

Loads of booze, but I always have loads of booze! Probably about 3 extra items. But I am not in the UK and there is no tempting ready made Christmssy MandS stuff nearby!

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 23/12/2017 13:50

Polly what have you got? A loaf of bitterness?

I wonder where OP is though? They came here, asked us for our info and didn't share their own!?

gemdrop84 · 23/12/2017 13:51

We always have a chocolate log, mince pies, nuts (honey roasted), cheese and cracker selection, a selection of fresh pork pies from the butchers and pate for our starter. I also get some jars of chutney and pickles from a local business. I stopped buying chocolates and biscuits as we tend to get at least a tin or two for christmas. Oh and not forgetting the christmas bottle of Baileys...which I've already drunk- oops!

GreyMorning · 23/12/2017 14:13

Canapés! I bloody love them, all the cheese, extra chocolate, wine, cocktails, I am so excited!

CheshireChat · 23/12/2017 14:58

Alcohol! We hardly ever drink so we picked up a couple of bottles of Buck's fizz. We got some fizzy drinks for us and orange juice for the toddler (though DP seems to think we're running a nursery considering the amount he bought).

A huge pork pie and meats and cheeses for starters. Pigs in blankets.

Also stuff like chocolates, biscuits and crisps which we normally don't have in.

Also stocked up on fresh fruit and veg as we buy from a little independent place which will be shut for longer.

I've made a gingerbread house and will make a tree as well, plus maybe some Christmas cookies (as DS wants Santa to have a homemade one HmmGrin).

We have food for the next couple of weeks, plus nibbles for ages so it's not really accurate to say it's for Christmas.

imjusthereforasec · 23/12/2017 21:58

Thank you for all your responses, I wrote a list of ideas from your suggestions and he ticked off his choices (mainly boxes of chocolate!) so we are now ready for Christmas and the house smells of quality street!

He’s been working crazy long hours so no chance of him getting out, I was trying to make it extra special.

Happy DH! Thanks mumsnet x

Ok - after reading this I now need to go out tomorrow and buy cheese, cheese, and other tasty savoury things. We have lots of chocolate and biscuits etc.

cathyclown · 23/12/2017 22:03

Alcohol and lots of it. Sausage rolls and vol au vents etc. Nice cheese. That's it really.

We amazingly do not like chocolate or sweet things at all. Bless.

So feck the visitors they get savoury or nothing here ha ha!

Well I have a pack of chocolate digestives somewhere, must check the dates on em.

ferntwist · 23/12/2017 22:09

Aw how nice OP. Your DH is a lucky man! Have a lovely Christmas and enjoy the Quality Street Smile

jarhead123 · 23/12/2017 22:14

Cheese, chocolates, mince pies, crisps/nuts, fizz, alcohol
