Bus driver presumed i had a bus pass

Aibu to feel slightly offended by this. I DO have a bus pass because i have recently become a pensioner. I really didn't think i looked that old though, especially today, was dressed trendy, had taken time with hair and makeup. But when i got on the bus, had to have a little run to get it, bus driver smiled and said, "you should have your bus pass ready" when i got my purse out. I mean, what if i wasn't a pensioner, surely he shouldn't just presume? What do you all think. Feel really old now. Sad

Eh? Surely bus pass can be substituted for oyster card or travel card or even bank card?
And it's oft said people that use public transport should have their tickets/card/whatever at the ready.
Surely you're reading waaay too much into this?
Not like he referenced a freedom pass or called you gran.

Parrcful · 22/12/2017 17:13

I've been called gran before, when out with my ds who was a baby at the time 😣

CurryWorst · 22/12/2017 17:15

He assumed you have a bus pass and you do have a bus pass?

Er YABU.

SaucyJack · 22/12/2017 17:15

It was probably because you took your purse out without saying anything.

If you were buying a ticket, then you would've asked him for one as soon as you got on.

Vitalogy · 22/12/2017 17:16

A bus pass in general probably.
Maybe he remembers you from another journey.
You've earned those years, own it woman.

x2boys · 22/12/2017 17:16

Me too parrc I was 33 at the time😣

MumGoneMild · 22/12/2017 17:17

Gazillions of people have bus passes not just the elderly.
Our weekly tickets are called passes too.

I don't think he was calling you elderly.

However yanbu cause if you are then I am
I didnt get asked for Id when I brought booze yesterday and was most upset with the cashier. He could of asked, just to flatter me.

jlbcredit · 22/12/2017 17:18

I call my monthly travel card my bus pass as do many people. Hope that helps.

FluttershysCutieMarkTheHerald · 22/12/2017 17:18

To be fair it just shows he has good judgement surely?! You are a pensioner, you have a bus pass, he told you to have it ready and you showed him your bus pass - that he correctly judged that you would have.

Obviously he would have BU if you weren't a pensioner but you are. He's walking a fine line if he says to lots of people but this one he got right.

FuzzyCustard · 22/12/2017 17:18

YABU because I am envious for two reasons...

  1. I shan't be eligible for a bus pass until I am 66 (when I was planning for 60)
  2. I live in a village with four buses a week and next year they are cutting those completely.
Laiste · 22/12/2017 17:20

DD had a season pass for the rural bus when she was 17 and called it her bus pass.

PuppyMonkey · 22/12/2017 17:20

I keep my bus pass in a special pocket in my bag so I have easy access to it. Top tip, there. I'm not a pensioner, I mean my Mango card as they call them round here.

NovemberWitch · 22/12/2017 17:20

DS carded someone yesterday, buying booze. She was 42 and delighted. He thought she needed cheering up.

Laiste · 22/12/2017 17:21

So did everyone else btw. Call it a bus pass.

EmilyChambers79 · 22/12/2017 17:22

All our bus travel cards are referred to as bus passes, it isn't a term reserved for the retired.

TheSecondOfHerName · 22/12/2017 17:23

DD has a bus pass and she's 13.

Driver may not have meant a senior bus pass.

MumGoneMild · 22/12/2017 17:23

See NovemberWitch you did well bringing up that boy!
My cashier looked at my obviously decrepit face for all of a fast blink and just moved on to the next item.

Gutted

Ellisandra · 22/12/2017 17:25

Is it a free one?
Because if you're that bothered about people thinking you're the age you actually are, why not give up that perk to keep it secret? Yeah, thought it wasn't that important.

Oh to live in a society where being mistaken for older actually isn't considered an insult.

eddiemairswife · 22/12/2017 17:27

Perhaps you do look older than you think.Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/12/2017 17:31

I once took baby DS and the rest of my kids into the Body Shop and the otherwise charming sales assistant tried to interest me in their new range for over 55s. I was 42 and fairly glammed up. Surely common sense says I wouldn't have a baby if I was over 55 or a big gang of kids shopping with me if I was the Gran?

bestthings · 22/12/2017 17:32

Must do eddie Grin

What a lovely young man, NovemberWitch! Good job raising him Wink

bestthings · 22/12/2017 17:36

ellis If I "gave up that perk* what difference would it make. The driver presumed i had a pass before he knew i had one. No need to be nasty about it. Should i feel guilty because i have one?

OP posts:
Ellisandra · 22/12/2017 17:37

@bestthings I'm not being nasty. I'm just suggesting you get some perspective. So you look your age? Frankly, so what?

Ellisandra · 22/12/2017 17:39

I'm not suggesting for a moment you feel guilty for your age related perk. Just that if it's really that big a deal for people to think (correctly) that you're old enough for it - then pay full fare and hide your evidence!
