To tell DH that I'm sticking to my plan?

For Christmas it's DH, Me, DD (2) and DHs best friend. We've done it this way since DD was born as family live close enough to visit on the day and it saves the arguments between DM and MIL over whose turn it is to host us (they don't get on or like each other much - had to be kept separate at our wedding) plus it means DHs BF who has no family locally has somewhere to go for Christmas.

Ask DH what he wanted for Christmas lunch in October, so I could order etc. He said he didn't fancy Turkey and as I'm not bothered and neither is his BF I decided to get a large chicken instead.

Just doing the Veg shop for Christmas dinner with DD and DH texts me to say he actually wants Turkey so could I try and get one as he really wants it Angry

I want to swing for him right now, it's 3 days to Christmas. Had he told me even a few weeks ago I could of got one but theres no chance now. Oddly enough both Tesco and Morrisons haven't got any left Hmm

So WIBU to tell him to do one? Or just starve the bastard on Monday and enjoy my Chicken anyway?

Anyone texting me food orders like that would be eating humble pie on Christmas Day.

Having said that, there is no way that Turkey is all sold out today.

kateandme · 22/12/2017 16:34

could you have chicken now then?that if you can get a turkey though.
but I would just tell him no.he said chicken that's what you've got.
or if you think its chrismtas lets just be kind and you can get on then do a turkey and forget the anxst.yes hes been a toe-rag to request it now but bollox to holding resentment over it,its not worth your time hun.
but if you can or don't want to change now then tell him.just tell him no.guaretnee you will all enjoy the chicken more anyway as actually its a far nicer meat.

Allthebestnamesareused · 22/12/2017 16:35

They even had them at the M&S foodstore at our local petrol station today. Still time to get one!

Motoko · 22/12/2017 16:51

If the chicken was taken out of the freezer yesterday, it'll need cooking before Monday.

Your DH can pick up a turkey after he's finished work. The supermarkets will still be open, even if they're not 24 hour ones, they'll be open until 10pm.

thatcatpidgeon · 22/12/2017 16:52

Blimey, I haven't asked anyone what they want, bought anything or actually thought about Christmas yet (few bits for kids but basically planning Sat after lunch do and poss Sunday if I need it. We always shop for Christmas lunch about an hour before the shops shut on Christmas Eve (great reductions!) and have never failed to get turkey if we want it (although last year went for a joint of silverside beef and some lovely organic lamb leg - costing less than £5 total!).

Hard to believe anywhere has run out - not everyone organises themselves a quarter of a year before Christmas & the shops do cater for the less organised amongst us! Mind you, your DH needs to get himself down the shops - if he wants it he gets it, simple!

dingdongdigeridoo · 22/12/2017 16:56

Get him one of these bad boys:

And enjoy your delicious chicken while he chokes it down!

Roomster101 · 22/12/2017 17:00

It's fine to insist on chicken if you are the one buying on cooking. However, your excuse that the shops have run out of turkey is ridiculous. I never do the Christmas food shop until a couple of days before and the shops have never run out of turkey or anything else. I can see why people order in advance if they are cooking for loads of people but if not it's another example of how so many people (usually women) make a big fuss/stress over nothing at Christmas.

luckylavender · 22/12/2017 17:01

There are definitely still turkeys and that chicken will be off by Monday.

Shadow666 · 22/12/2017 17:01

I can’t believe how accommodating everyone is.

EveryoneIs · 22/12/2017 18:01

I got the Chicken out last night before I went to bed it's in the fridge and not yet fully defrosted reckon it will be by tomorrow lunchtime, it will go in the slow cooker Christmas Eve and be ready by tea time Christmas Day.

There's only Morrisons and a small Tesco in our town, so will have to go to either Asda or the big Tesco which is about 10 miles away, I drive so it's not a massive problem I just thought I was done with Christmas stuff and all I ad to do was wrap the Santa presents.

honeyroar · 22/12/2017 18:18

Why would you defrost something in the fridge? Doesn't it get yukky chicken tainted water all over your fridge? I can't believe it takes nearly three days to get a chicken from freezer to table. I defrost mine overnight, then pop it in the oven for a couple of hours, if that, job done by the following lunchtime. Sorry to be so personal about your cooking, it just sounds hard work. I can see why you don't want to go back to a supermarket at this time of year though. I did all my food shopping on weds and have no intention of going near a supermarket until everyone is back at work in January!

Roomster101 · 22/12/2017 18:42

It's fair enough to not want to do any more Christmas shopping but why can't your DH go if he is the one that wants turkey?

Floellabumbags · 22/12/2017 18:48

Why don't you tell him it's a micro turkey, especially bred for smaller appetites?*

*I've never eaten turkey and have no idea if it would work.

GoReylo · 22/12/2017 18:58

Just tell him you couldn't find one. Having a chicken and a turkey for four of you might be a bit much.

ijustwannadance · 22/12/2017 19:08

All those saying to just buy one, why the fuck should op have to go out last minute to crowded carpark/supermarket because her husband is a tit who decided on chicken and has changed his mind last minute?

Wonder if his mate has said he was looking forward to turkey.

Tell him to get it himself or to just eat the bloody chicken.

RestingGrinchFace · 22/12/2017 19:10

Tell him to cook it himself then.

nancy75 · 22/12/2017 19:15

I was meh about this until I saw how long the chicken was going to be sitting about for - whether you get another chicken a turkey or a packet of turkey twizzlers you need to buy something else because that chicken’s going to be stinkin to high heaven by Christmas Day.
There’s no way on earth the supermarkets have all sold out of turkey on 22nd December & most supermarkets will be open to at least 10pm tonight, if not later

Lilyhatesjaz · 22/12/2017 19:31

I took my chicken out of the freezer today to defrost In the fridge it will take a couple of days. it is in the meat box in the bottom so won't drip on anything I thought you were meant to defrost in the fridge.
If a chicken defrosted today will be no good by Monday what about all the fresh one's for sale in the supermarkets many of which have been previously frozen. They are all being sold to cook Monday.

EveryoneIs · 22/12/2017 19:34

Lily Mines in the meat box too, and checking the sell by date for the chickens in Morrisons many had the 24th or 25th on and they always give a few days leeway don't they? I've always done it like that and it been fine, got a chicken out on Wednesday or Thursday to cook Sunday or Monday for a roast and it been fine.

Sofabitch · 22/12/2017 19:36

My local trash food cafe got given 600 turkeys on Christmas eve last year. There is no way shops are out of turkeys.

Sofabitch · 22/12/2017 19:37

But i would say if he has changed his mind. Thats fine. He can go pick one up

ijustwannadance · 22/12/2017 19:49

The bloody chicken will be fine in the fridge. OP hasn't left it out in a hot kitchen.

Clutterbugsmum · 22/12/2017 19:54

As most shops are open 24 hours I'm sure he can find on open after work if he wants a turkey bad enough.

Shadow666 · 22/12/2017 22:33

Do a turkey for New Year instead?

SirGawain · 22/12/2017 22:42

Honeyroar
I defrost mine overnight, then pop it in the oven for a couple of hours, if that, job done by the following lunchtime.
