I've just made a payment to J.D. Williams, the first time I have used them.

They have "kindly" upped my credit limit to £600. I have just looked on Next and my credit limit is £5,000, Littlewoods is £10,000. This doesn't include other online companies or credit cards. AIBU in thinking this is just ridiculous. I did not ask for any of the credit limits to be increase and I know a few people who would just spend, spend, spend until they were at their limit. In this day and age I think it is responsible.

Close down all these credit accounts then! Store cards are all really poor value for money anyway.

These stores have no duty of care for the health of anyone's bank balance. Their duty is to their shareholders, to maximise their profits. They can achieve that by upping all storecard account credit limits - especially just before Christmas - in the hopes that this will encourage some to come and spend more. It's part and parcel of capitalism.

It terrifies me how much credit companies would offer me. I've got one credit card which I use for emergencies or big purchases and nothing else. I earn a good salary so credit is regularly offered but I just would be too frightened of going there.
