To think Ikea shouldn’t deliver my Xmas gifts in January

Placed an order with Ikea at the start of the month. Order is mostly Xmas gifts. It was due to be delivered yesterday. I heard nothing from Ikea so assumed all was fine. When it hadn’t arrived I phoned to check what was going on.

After more than an hour on the phone I finally spoke to someone who told me that Parcelforce were responsible for the delay and I needed to contact them. I asked several times for a reference number but was told one wasn’t needed to talk to Parcelforce, just need name and delivery address. Contacted Parcelforce who said this is rubbish and they could only help if I had the reference number.

Another 35 minutes on hold to Ikea, followed by 40 minutes arguing with their staff who wanted to fob me off by telling me to talk to Parcelforce again, and they finally admitted that actually my order is still sitting in their distribution centre due to their error. They will now deliver it in January, meaning no Xmas gifts for us. And they won’t be offering any compensation, but I can cancel the order and receive a refund in 7-10 working days.

Judging from Twitter this has happened to quite a few people.

I’m now having to find replacement Xmas gifts and probably pay a fortune to have them delivered by Xmas. Not to mention the wasted day waiting in for a delivery that hadn’t even been shipped, which could have been avoided if Ikea had at least communicated with me.

So, AIBU to think that Ikea should be offering proper compensation for their Xmas fuck up? They’ve wasted a day of my time waiting for a delivery that was sitting in their warehouse. They made no attempt to contact me to warn me of the delay. I’ve had to spend over two hours on the phone listening to their lies before they finally admitted they’d screwed up and wouldn’t be delivering on time. And our Xmas presents will now be arriving sometime in January so I’m being left out of pocket because I need to find some way to get replacement presents before Xmas.

And, to add insult to injury, they’ve just sent me an email saying

“We hope you enjoy your recent purchase, we've listed some items below to help you create your wonderful everyday at home.”

My yesterday would have been considerably more wonderful had I not spent two hours of it on the phone to those clowns. FFS.

What a heap of crap. I would take the refund and never order from them again. Explain to present recipients (I assume they're adults?) that your delivery was messed up, get them all something small for now and promise gifts in the New Year. Or you could give vouchers instead?

I'd get onto Twitter and see if you can stir up a bit of a goodwill gesture that way!

Emergency arrangements could be printing out pictures of what you've bought and put it in a Christmas card with a text that they'll arrive later. Most people would understand this I think. Mishaps do happen. Automatic emails like that are never fun, but it's nothing personal. Sorry to hear this happening to you, I've ordered stuff from IKEA since the 1980s and never experienced any difficulty. (Different shipping firm, however).

Thanks for the ideas. They’re kids presents so sadly not sure I would get away with saying Santa sent a card with a photo of their gift in (but that would have been great if they were adult’s gifts).

I think I’ll try a twitter rant at them. It seems like a lot of people are in the same position so they might be concerned about what bad publicity this will be for them. I saw one person who ordered a play kitchen as their DD’s main present that’s now not arriving until next year! Shock
