To think Poundland ad is not “genius” and is actually a bit I appropriate?

Most comments on Facebook are proclaiming it “genius.” I don’t think a sexual innuendo is that genius TBF.

Plus why is it a woman lying on her back with a t shirt saying “power” and a man standing over her dominating her. They could have at least chosen another sexual innuendo.

Also difficult to explain to kids.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

This is the whole bloody point! It's fucking Poundland FFS. It's supposed to appeal to a low base

If only we had a blog post reflecting on this issue in a post-Brexit UK maybe we could understand.

Originalfoogirl · 22/12/2017 01:10

This is the whole bloody point!
It’s the whole point if you are a teenager trying to shock.

It is not the whole point of an advertising campaign (and I use that word lightly)

Eltonjohnssyrup · 22/12/2017 01:12

Nope. Not with the utter drivel they have posted on their twitter for the rest of the year.

Really? You think BetFred, PaddyPower Sky Sports, Ladbrokes etc wouldn't give this person a job? You are INSANE. They've made their career.

LlamaClock · 22/12/2017 01:19

"It's a joke" is so overused - especially when degrading comments are said and then can't be taken back. It's very defensive. Anyway, Poundland is a family shop, it's not exactly Ann Summers, is it? So why is the advert pornified?!

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 01:20

I'm on Twitter, I can see the vast majority of those commenting absolutely love it

Which is one reason I think it's good to discuss it here

if this thread means that one woman realises it's not a joke, one woman realises it's about how much men hate women, and how many handmaidens those men have serving them ...

Now, if someone hasn't Photoshopped elf bleeding to death from his balls tomorrow, I'll be disappointed all over again! Grin

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:29

and how many handmaidens those men have serving them ...

The term handmaiden is offensive in itself.
Why is a women automatically a handmaiden if they don't scream offense at everything? Terms like that do your cause no help whatsoever.

pallisers · 22/12/2017 01:29

This thread has been fascinating.

It made me understand for the first time why so many women voted for Trump despite the "grabbing pussies" video. Because it is all a bit of fun isn't it. Just banter. Stop being so middle class/uptight/ educated and get the funny joke.

Imagine being a woman working in Poundland. You probably don't have much choice of jobs and your company is spouting all the legally correct things about harassment etc but you know damn well where you stand --- just a bit of banter innit. Mad how those uptight bitches don't get the joke.

gluteustothemaximus · 22/12/2017 01:31

I don’t like it.

I’m allowed to not like something, or find it unfunny, or even be offended by it without being called a ‘special snowflake’ with exclamations of ‘pc gawn mad’ or ‘it’s a joke ffs’.

And I most definitely do not think it’s genius.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 01:33

Pumpkin, I've been told off for using that term before but the fact that you are now doing that....

Lighten up. Bantz. Just a joke Grin

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:34

Imagine being a woman working in Poundland. You probably don't have much choice of jobs

See. THAT is offensive in itself. You're saying that those who work for Poundland don't have any choice of working elsewhere?! It's a perfectly legitimate retail job that pays well. I find your comment more offensive than anything I've seen today! Poundland shop doesn't mean automatically no good job. It's a perfectly good one that pays.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 01:36

Pumpkin "The term handmaiden is offensive in itself"

You special snowflake you.

We need a "weeping with laughter" emoji.

I honestly did not expect this from you and it's so fucking funny Grin

pallisers · 22/12/2017 01:38

You are more offended at my saying that people working minimum wage retail jobs often have less choice of jobs than seeing a male elf swinging ersatz genetalia over the prone body of a seemingly unconscious female doll with a feminist slogan on her t-shirt.

Couldn't be arsed talking to you so. Crack on and enjoy your life. Please don't move to the US.

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:41

Pumpkin "The term handmaiden is offensive in itself"You special snowflake you.We need a "weeping with laughter" emoji.I honestly did not expect this from you and it's so fucking funny

Confused OK.
Not properly triggered by the term but it did seem a bit ironic with some of the other comments saying why things were offensive which is why I said it.
What is a handmaiden precisely? Explain. Someone who occasionally thinks like a bloke? As sometimes females do. Pisses me off when we're told we all have to think the same way and also find the same thing funny or not funny.

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:45

You are more offended at my saying that people working minimum wage retail jobs often have less choice of jobs

You are spectacularly missing the point or in your own little ivory tower where everyone in retail is doing it because they can't get anything better job wise or they don't know anything better.
Nothing to do with having less choice of jobs. Students, studying for medical degrees? SAHM'S with law degrees, wanting to get back into the workplace after several years out of it in any old way?
Open your mind

RavenLG · 22/12/2017 01:45

Maybe Barbie asked to be teabagged for fucks sake.

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:47

Maybe Barbie asked to be teabagged for fucks sake.

Exactly! Who knows! it's a doll Grin

DeleteOrDecay · 22/12/2017 01:47

We get it pumpkin, you find the responses funny. Change the record.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 01:47

Pumpkin, what's "properly triggered"? Would you need your smelling salts?

See definition 1

I'm off to bed.

RavenLG · 22/12/2017 01:48

Llama it may not be Ann Summers but they do sell sex toys, condoms, lube etc [shockhorror]
Queue wont someone think of the children screams

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:51

We get it pumpkin, you find the responses funny. Change the record.

I'm merely putting my point across, and at the same time replying to some of the comments on here. Which is what others are doing too.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 22/12/2017 01:52

This is the whole bloody point! It's fucking Poundland FFS. It's supposed to appeal to a low base

Then it has failed as a campaign. Is it going to attract customers who don't normally shop in Poundland?

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:54

Then it has failed as a campaign. Is it going to attract customers who don't normally shop in Poundland?

It's going to keep people who have previously shopped in Poundland and attract those who have never set foot in one as well.

Kimlek · 22/12/2017 01:55

I can absolutely guarantee you: this time next year every person involved in this campaign will have a better job and have made their name in marketing.

I hope not Elton & Pumpkin Surely no company thinks it’s even ok let alone humorous to depict assault. What are Poundland thinking?

If Barbie had been another elf it may have been amusing. As far as all that elf nonsense goes. Certainly not offensive. But they chose a Barbie, female. Wearing a ‘power’ top. Arms stuck by her sides. The poses are purposeful. Suggesting sexual assault - not suggesting consensual trabagging. Purposely trying to be offensive? That’s what you’re saying Elton & pumpkin?
Then why choose sexual assault in the midst of #metoo? Why not choose racism?
Because sexual assault is acceptable even humorous? That’s what you are saying.
Racism isn’t funny but sexism is.
We can be outraged and complain about racist ads but not about sexist ones.

PumpkinSquash · 22/12/2017 01:56

I base my last comment on people who have shopped there before and don't intend on stopping and also tweets I have seen today that say they have never stepped foot in there before but after today are paying it a visit tomorrow.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 01:59

Kilmek "Surely no company thinks it’s even ok let alone humorous to depict assault"

Well they do and many people find it funny

Like I said, Mark Pym is on LinkedIn. You can talk to him there. Pound land have a list of other directors on their website.

I really am going to bed now....
