How often do you wash your toddlers winter coat?

I wash DD's puffa every time it comes back from preschool covered in mud / paint / food etc, so maybe fortnightly,

My sister doesn't wash her DD's, just wet wipes it if it's food or something smelly.

Am I being precious or is DSis a bit grim?

Each to their own; some folk genuinely don't mind a wipe down with a wet wipe. So long as the coat isn't revolting it's not a big deal.

Gunpowder · 19/12/2017 16:17

I do a once a term big wash of all the coats and only wash them in between if they are grubby- prob once every couple of months? Was more frequently when they were 1-1.5 and fell in puddles regularly.

DaisyDando · 19/12/2017 16:19

I have two cheap supermarket coats for my DS. I also have quite a nice M&S one which he won’t wear. The cheap ones get slung in the machine maybe once a week because I think he rolls around in the mud at nursery. However, I wouldn’t be mortified if it was a bit grubby (yet hygienic) as kids are a bit grubby generally this time of year.

Pumperthepumper · 19/12/2017 16:48

I have to wash DS’s every five minutes because he gets totally minging at nursery. I’m convinced they encourage it 🧐

doze931 · 19/12/2017 16:51

Ds1 maybe once a week
Ds2 seems to be every day. I dont know how he gets so dirty

Scentofwater · 19/12/2017 16:55

Sometimes more than once a week. DD puts it on then SPLAT straight into the grubbiest muddiest puddle she can find.

When it’s not so muddy outside then only when it gets mucky, maybe monthly.

ZoopDragon · 19/12/2017 17:10

My 2 year old has 3 winter coats so I wash them less often. Her nursery coat gets washed at least once a week as it gets grubby and smells of nursery! The other 2 only if she spills food on them or gets muddy, or if she's wiped her nose on the sleeves! So around once every 3-4 weeks. Washing with soap flakes helps to protect the waterproof coating.

Vitalogy · 19/12/2017 17:13

There's no point in making work for yourself I say. Where possible I used to wipe. My son most of the time would keep the same trousers and jumper for the week at school and a clean shirt every day. I used to buy the short sleeve shirts as well, the cuffs used to get too grubby on the long sleeve ones. The coat wash wasn't often at all. Those puff coats are easy to wipe with that nylon material.

Vitalogy · 19/12/2017 17:16

I'm not sure why food and paint is ending up on the coat.

Snortles · 19/12/2017 17:24

DSs never got their coats dirty with mud or paint in pre school/nursery. Clothes yes, but never coats. So they went in the wash every few months or if on the rare occasion coats got dirty at the park/food and drink stains

BlurryFace · 19/12/2017 17:27

When it starts to look a bit of a state I guess.

BarbarianMum · 19/12/2017 17:46

Constantly. They each had two for this very reason. But then mine were mud magnets - no wet wipe was going to cut it. Wink

SandyDenny · 19/12/2017 17:48

Is this what aibu has come to now - laundry queries?

weekfour · 19/12/2017 18:05

I bought a 2 year old a yellow coat.
What a dick!

I have to wash it at least once a week.

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 19/12/2017 18:08

never. It's on its third year (I buy big) and if I wash it I'll have to re-proof it, but they never get the same level of waterproofing. It's a bit muddy but I don't mind that. No food etc as he only wears it outdoors.

CurryWorst · 19/12/2017 18:17

Almost never. Its wipe cleanable but never gets very dirty anyway.

Why would you have paint and food over an outdoor coat?

BarbarianMum · 19/12/2017 18:21

Why would you have food on an outdoor coat? Well if you are outdoors for hours at a time with a toddler and they're active and it's cold then you do have to feed them, no? Maybe yours could eat without getting it alll over themselves but mine couldn't and were hardly aline in that.

softkittywarmkitty28 · 19/12/2017 18:22

My 9 year old has 2 coats and one is always in the wash.
She attracts mud, slime, food etc.

trilbydoll · 19/12/2017 18:24

Hardly ever. DD2 has a nursery coat that stays there, I'll probably bring it home when she grows out of it and wash it before giving it to the charity shop.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 19/12/2017 18:30

When it is dirty. All kids coats in our house have to be easy to wash and tumble dry.

Gillian1980 · 19/12/2017 18:37

Dd is 2 and she has 3 coats. We usually end up watching 1 coat a week or thereabouts as they get muddy from the garden at nursery. They’re machine washable but can’t go on the dryer so take a couple of days on the radiator.

TheSoapyFrog · 19/12/2017 18:46

I wash them after every preschool session because they're absolutely filthy and wet wipes just don't cut it.

Littlelambpeep · 19/12/2017 18:51

Mine have two jackets and one s bright yellow so that seems to be constantly in the wash. The others about once a fortnight - childminder has wet suits for them

SweetEnough · 19/12/2017 19:23

When they're filthy, otherwise a wet wipe will do

Vitalogy · 19/12/2017 19:24

BarbarianMum Yes, that's totally understandable if out and about yourself with them. But it's just that OP's child is at pre school with food and paint getting over their coat, surely they'll not be eating and painting indoors with their coat on, that's what I was getting at.
