How often do you wash your toddlers winter coat?

I wash DD's puffa every time it comes back from preschool covered in mud / paint / food etc, so maybe fortnightly,

My sister doesn't wash her DD's, just wet wipes it if it's food or something smelly.

Am I being precious or is DSis a bit grim?

Thanks all.

Don't you eat outside? We often have a snack at the park or similar and it doesn't always end up entirely in tummies.

ERM, I've never washed a coat! Just a wet cloth to get the muck off...

BackBoiler · 19/12/2017 21:37

I shove my school kids coats aged 3, 5 and 9 every Friday as soon as they get home!

Chienrouge · 19/12/2017 21:38

Mine are 4 and 2 and I’ve washed them once so far this winter Blush.
They don’t get particularly filthy at pre school and they don’t eat in their coats generally. If we’re going somewhere we know is going to be wet/muddy they wear their waterproof all in ones.

RestingGrinchFace · 19/12/2017 21:38

I buy hiking gear specifically for this reason. It's almost impossible to get it dirty and if it does get dirty I can just wipe it off.

BackBoiler · 19/12/2017 21:38

Ps they have snot on the sleeve and mud on the backs a wash is easier than a wet wipe!

BackBoiler · 19/12/2017 21:39

And I am sure toddlers get more snotty and dribbley

Joinourclub · 19/12/2017 21:42

Am I the only one who has never washed my child's coat?

Chienrouge · 19/12/2017 21:43

Mine are always have a pack of tissues in their pocket to avoid the snot on sleeve issue!

DancingLedge · 19/12/2017 21:45

You're wonderful.
DSis is not up to your standards.

Honestly, this what you wanted to hear?

BackBoiler · 19/12/2017 21:45

Chienrouge too much trouble obviously for my kid....feral being she is. Good job I have my washing machine.

QueenUnicorn · 19/12/2017 21:48

Once a year - seriously.....

Tiredtomybones · 19/12/2017 22:06

Depends on the weather forecast. If I can get it washed and dried before the next wave of cold weather hits, I will wash it. If it looks like a cold few days, where his lighter "autumn" coat just won't be warm enough, I'll use wipes.

Vitalogy · 19/12/2017 22:07

Don't you eat outside? We often have a snack at the park or similar and it doesn't always end up entirely in tummies. Yes of course, it was just that your OP read that the mess was happening at pre school. We still haven't got to the bottom of the paint issue though

Fuck. You are meant to wash their coats?!?

Smallpotatolove · 19/12/2017 22:25

Very rarely, maybe once every few months when I remember? They look fine though tbh.

ADayGivingMeHope · 19/12/2017 22:26

Antibacterial wipes - it's a decent waterproof one and washing machine would destroy the waterproofing!

Jakeyboy1 · 19/12/2017 22:32

It's grim but I've just remembered DD's came home covered in mud and I've forgotten to put it in the wash...

Incrediblehulky · 19/12/2017 22:44

Joinourclub - no you are not the only one! I might give the coat a bit of a rub with a wet wipe if it got a bit of chocolate or mud on or something but other than that it wouldn't have really occurred to me to put a coat in the washing machine 😄

CatsAndCairngorms · 19/12/2017 22:48

I have once in my life washed a child's coat and that was because it got dog poo in it. Otherwise it definitely wouldn't occur to me. But I really don't care if there's mud on my kids' outerwear.

monkeymamma · 19/12/2017 22:51

Only if they have one of the following on:

sick
poo
dog poo

Anything else, wet wipe!

I seem to wash my own (cheap puffa style coat) a lot as I end up carrying DS2 and he scuffles me with muddy boots. But even that can be dealt with by wet wipe.

piglet81 · 19/12/2017 22:57

Only when it looks really grubby. At nursery they have painting easels in the garden, plus messy trays of shaving foam/oats/glitter/goodness knows what, which does sometimes get on coats. I don't mind washing a coat if it means I don't have to facilitate such play experiences at home! Wink

QueenRefusenik · 19/12/2017 22:58

Oh bollocks. THAT was what I meant to do tonight while I binge-watch Stranger Things. Knew there was something. Oh well...

TheBlueMeaniesAreComing · 19/12/2017 23:50

My two year old and one year old have two heavy winter coats and they are both washed roughly twice a month. My 6 yr olds winter coat gets washed once a month as does mine and dps. I can’t just set wipe it. It doesn’t sit well with me 🤣
