Pay for trial day in job....

Hi ladies, dd (15) has just done 2 evenings work for a small business on a trial basis. We chatted last night and I've decided it's too many hours for her so have messaged the business owner to say she won't be back in etc. All fine. Where does dd stand with payment for the hours she has worked? She's entitled to pay for any hours she has worked there right?

The permit thing is local bylaws. Some places you need it, some you don't.

Perhaps both you and she would have benefited from doing some research before accepting this job in the first place.

I don't believe an employer can legally discuss anything with you due to data protection legislation.

The rest of the advice re trial payments has been spot on.

*No matter how people try to explain that unpaid trials are a given, I thoroughly disagree.

Youngsters have the shit-covered end of the stick.

They get paid less than older people doing exactly the same job and spend hours of their time on unpaid trials.

Also, replace "teenagers" with "women" or "people of colour". Doesn't seem right, does it?

They used to justify paying women less for doing the same job citing that it was just for a bit of pocketmoney and they said to those of colour that they could take shit pay or fuck off, they can find somebody else etc.*

This would make sense... except that unpaid trials are not exclusively for teenagers. You could not work in my old bar without having completed a trial shift, regardless of age.

Agreed Op, you come across as rude. Enjoy the advise, next time many won't bother.

Wine - still don't agree with unpaid trials whether for teenagers or middle aged managers etc. I focused on teenagers because even at the end of providing free labour, their minimum wage is lower than the older person next to them. So they seem to get a bit more of a raw deal.

Trials don't seem to last an hour or two either but are actual shifts, and in my area: multiple unpaid shifts.

Employers can bin off people very easy, especially in the first two years, so it's not as if an unsuitable person can't be turned away.
