www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/18/suspect-arrested-over-death-of-british-diplomat-rebecca-dykes-in-beirut

Another woman raped and murdered by a man.

Another day another dollar.

But the guardian says it “wasn’t politically motivated”.

Ok maybe not but it was motivated by hatred of women. If every news outlet consistently called these incidents what they are, gender based violence, and accompanied them with stats on rape then maybe people would start to join the dots and realise the enormity of this global problem.

Or maybe it wouldn’t make a jot of difference because people see VAW as inevitable.

Or terrorism...of half the population

passmethewineplease · 18/12/2017 23:11

YANBU OP.

Also read a story tonihht about a young mum who was killed in Thatcham.

I fear for my daughters and the world they will grow up in.

Nickynackynoodle I can't stop crying. It's too much.

honeysucklejasmine · 18/12/2017 23:16

Nicky that list... Horrifying.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/12/2017 23:16

She was a diplomat; it's not a cop out to say that the attack wasn't politically motivated. Other than that Yanbu.

I've been following that case of the falsely accused young man. He seems to be all over the media. Curious, that is.

Goshthatwentwell · 18/12/2017 23:16

It's not even just women. Most terrorist acts in the media are being pinned on religion or country of origin, Whereas the common factor is that they are ALWAYS men.
I do bring this up in conversation a lot and the you get male friends rushing to their phones to google female terrorists. And they perhaps find a supporter of someone who commits these atrocities but it quickly becomes evident its a male thing. Yet no one comments on this blindly obvious link between shoot outs in America, poisonings in Russia or vans running amok in Europe, killing woman worldwide.

Nickynackynoodle · 18/12/2017 23:18

Gosh the other thing in common seems to be a history of domestic violence.

Not much else to say really.

CalmingBalm · 18/12/2017 23:23

YADNBU, I despair and am also aware of this time of year being notorious for the escalation of domestic violence, if this was reversed and me were being murdered by women in such high numbers there would be an outcry, I remember the dark days of police viewing DV as ‘just a domestic’ and would rarely act or intervene and whilst we have moved on thankfully in some respects from that terrifying attitude there is still a feeling of violence against women being way down any political agenda, I really can’t believe that May has reduced refuge funding, this country is a fucking disgrace in how we treat our vulnerable

gingergenius · 18/12/2017 23:24

@scatterolight

* The biggest common denominator is that all violent crimes are committed by human beings. Do I get a gold star from the sociology department?*

Erm
Because people with penises rape and violent crime is committed, in the majority, by people who own the dangly gonads. Otherwise known as penises. 🙄

Of course they won't. Patriarchy helps run that media. Until we smash it to pieces, it will always win.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 18/12/2017 23:37

The biggest common denominator is that all violent crimes are committed by human beings.

Nonsense. But genuinely why do you think like this? Is it because you don’t want to be accusatory towards men? You don’t want to hurt their feelings?

Because no one here does. No one wants to make decent men feel bad for any of this. But the statistics are so glaringly one sided that someone needs to point it out. If you can’t name the problem then you can’t solve it.

That poor woman. Out there travelling, helping people, enjoying a drink with friends, looking forward to seeing her family for Xmas. Her whole life ahead of her. Raped, murdered and discarded because some man saw her as nothing more than a hole.

It makes me want to weep.

Nickynackynoodle - that link was chilling.

Nickynackynoodle · 19/12/2017 00:05

Jean Hatchet just won’t shut up about it and I fucking love her for it.

She’s advocating for these women and inevitably on social media, they pop up and say “what about the men”.

Feel free to start your own project fellas. This is for women.

bridgetoc · 19/12/2017 00:06

At the noment it seems that nearly every other terrorist act is commited by an Uber driver. Now this, and not forgetting all the attacks on woman in London that they have tried to cover up.

A disgusting company that nobody should use.

CalmingBalm · 19/12/2017 00:06

Hear, hear Laudanum and NickyNacky

KennDodd · 19/12/2017 00:15

Maybe if they taxed men more to cover the cost of prisons and refuges for the women they terrorise there might be more effort put into solving the problem.

Nickynackynoodle · 19/12/2017 00:25

But it’s our fault ken

Obviously. Like, who else would be to blame for male violence against women. And male violence against men...

noradurst · 19/12/2017 00:31

++++1.

I also find some of those reports about the falsely accused young man are (surely not deliberately?) skewing the figures to make it unclear whether they're talking about criminals in general or rapists more particularly. Curiouser and curiouser...

Sad
RestingGrinchFace · 19/12/2017 00:50

she was a diplomat. That's why it's relevant that it wasn't politically motivated and within that context it most definitely wasn't politically motivated.

I would also question your assertion that it was motivated by a hatred for women-a disregard? Sure. But the nature of the murder as has been revealed so far would indicate that the prime motive was sexual.

If you are going to make a big deal about words use them properly. You don't have to twist and exaggerate to draw attention to the problem. Rape is a problem. The disregard that many men have for women is a problem. The vulnerability of women is a problem. If you try to make it about all out gender war then your argument will fail because it is far more nuanced. The relationship between sexual violence and gender based violence while apparent isn't causal. Men seem to have a greater likelihood of perpetrating sexual violence and women are more vulnerable to it. This is a result of women being the weaker sex. Not just physically. In many places women are afforded less protection by the law. And in many cultures women are afforded less respect. These three factors create a power imbalance that favours men and therein lies a solution. If you compare rape statistics with cultural and legal protections afforded to women you can see a pattern. You can see the beginnings of a solution.

You raise awareness about the fact that men frequently rape women and you will be met with a chorus of 'no shit'. You find and explain the root cause of male sexual violence directed at women and you may actually engage the wider public instead of irritating them. Stating the obvious like that is just annoying, meaningful discussion is what interests people not mindless spurting out of facts.

Battleax · 19/12/2017 00:51

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

Is this what we do with our education these days? Make the shallowest, most pointless observation possible? Here OP I can top your effort.... The biggest common denominator is that all violent crimes are committed by human beings. Do I get a gold star from the sociology department

Obviously you did mean to be so astonishingly rude.

But why?
