Am going to family for Christmas and wanted to bring a nice selection of wine - I’m on a bit of a budget this year - but appreciate it’s all I’m bringing (I usually host so a few bottles rather than catering for ten is a saving!!)

Anyone seen good bargains for decent wine in the supermarkets?

Lidl's Pedro Jimenez is very very drinkable and a delightful £3.95. Thank god my local Lidl isn't any closer...

I would go to Majestic and buy from their ‘best of’ basic range. It’s a really good selection of typical examples of most popular grapes. I went to a big wine tasting event recently (lots of wholesalers there) and was impressed with the range. Waitrose has a similar range (have tried a couple ) and they are reliable too. This will get you the best quality for your budget £6-9 per bottle). For your budget you can get a case of 12 and save 6 back for the New Year.

Crémant is a very good alternative to Champagne, a decent one will cost around £10-12. My favourite right now is Rose 7 Crémant de Limoux - it’s divine (£15). Beautiful stuff.

Picpoul de pinet is a fashionable white (good alternative to the ubiquitous NZ Sauv Blanc).

Aldi is hit and miss. I react to quite a bit of their stuff (red in face) Majestic I never react. Makes me wonder about the chemical processing Aldi wines are subject to.

As a rule of thumb. Do not spend less than £7 on a bottle of wine. The amount of tax and cost of transportation doesn’t leave enough for decent wine inside.

Waitrose currently have a magnum of The Ned NZ Sauv Blanc (2 bottles in 1) for £14.99

I agree that Villa Maria SB is also pretty good

Sancere is an appellation or region. The wine itself is Sauv Blanc. A good range northern Island New Zealand Sauv Blanc would do the trick.

Beaujolais is a Gamay Grape with similarities to Merlot. You can get some really good genetic merlot for that money. Or if you want something with more of a punch a then a new world shiraz or pinotage would work.

Barefoot

For that money I'd really recommend joining the wine society & getting a dozen delivered - not sure if there's time now though?

Or go to majestic wines if they have one near

Or the Tesco/Sainsbury's Douro is lovely, as is the Sainsbury's TTD Gurtliner or something-just had a look but can't find it.

That's plenty of money for a lovely selection!

@BluebellGal the co-op currently has Villa Maria for £2 off - £7.49 a bottle Grinthey seem to rotate it with Ned and Brancott Estate - I've not paid full price for any of my fave Marlborough SB's for about 4 months now GrinGrin

Beronia from Waitrose. AMAZING.

Baron De Lay also stunning. Both under £15 a bottle.

Wolfblass or any from New Zealand
