To buy alcohol for teachers at Christmas...

Is it ok to give a bottle of wine/beer/mulled wine to the teachers as a Christmas present? My husband said he wasn't sure it was appropriate, I wouldn't have thought twice otherwise... but now I'm unsure of the done thing...

I remember a couple years ago passing my daughter's teacher in the school car park, 3 days before Christmas hols, and saying 'I'm not going to beat around the bush. Red or white?' She laughed and said 'Red please!!'

Yes! It's pretty much the only thing you can't go wrong with - even if they don't drink they can regift it! (Unless you know they are teetotal or something!)

As a TA, every gift is very much appreciated and not at all expected. The usual gifts at my school are chocolate, wine, smellies, candles and flowers/pot plants.
The most bizarre gift I ever recieved was a lump of Cheddar cheese wrapped up! I think I’d once mentioned during a lesson about WW2 and rationing that cheese would be the thing I’d miss the most if food were rationed. Bless him, he’d obviously remembered and told his mum that I really like cheese. It really made me smile and was enjoyed alongside a bottle of red that another kind parent had given me.

I work in s school and get wine every Christmas.....I don't drink so I end up regifting it every year. I have mentioned it several times that I don't drink but it's such an ingrained habit for people to buy wine as a gift. Chocolates, coffee shop card flowers or candles are better for me.

I've got wine and chocolate bar that fits in the wine bag. Figured if they don't like the wine there's still chocolate lol

I figure any teacher who has my children all year may well need alcohol by Christmas.

I think it's an appropriate present if it's from a parent but inappropriate if it's from a child. And yes, I know the parent buys it either way.

DS1’s yr6 class was quite challenging shall we say so I sent him in with a bottle of red wine for the teacher at Christmas. I had remarked to DH that she looked like she needed it. What I didn’t bargain for was DS1 handing it over saying “merry Christmas miss, my mum thinks you look like you need this!” [grin@]

Nope there are lots of us that don't drink. Unless you're sure they do, something else would be better.

I don’t drink but a bottle is always helpful to regift and to offer visitors over Christmas (because I don’t drink I sometimes forget others do and don’t always have it in!).

I appreciate all presents and love getting bottles of wine so I can give them to MIL and any visitors. I don't particularly drink wine myself but nor do I burn candles. I am also pregnant but not announced to parents yet (and I think the children just think I'm fat or are too polite/scared to say anything?!).

If you're not sure you could always get your DC to ask the teacher. I always say books/chocolates when they ask. I do love reading and if they choose one suitable for their age (I teach 10 yr olds) then it can go in the book corner after I've read it.

I would not wine alcohol, I'm sure lots of teachers don't drink. Also DC's deliver the gifts if they fell in the bottle plus I wouldn't want them giving alcohol as a gift at a young age.
