To want the item at a discounted price if it's dirty?

Purchased a few bits, and one of them (a Summer romper for DS), had a big dirty mark on.

I got to the till, and enquired if it would be possible to get a reduction on the romper since it's got a dirty mark on.

I was told by the shop assistant that she couldn't issue one, as it wasn't stained, just marked and would come off.

I said that may be true, but I'm buying it right now brand new and expect it to be in new condition, not dirty.

Again, she said sorry but no since it isn't a stain.

I did end up buying full price as I was fond of the romper.

No, but where I used to work if you get a discount because it's marked, and the mark doesn't come out, you can't take it back.

For that reason only, I don't push for discount on marked items.

I could understand the discount if the stain wouldn't come out, but no they can't just give discounts for a mark. Otherwise you'd have people putting marks on the clothing so they get a discount.

I bought it because I know the mark will come out quite easily, but I still think it would have been good customer service/considerate to reduce it a tiny bit

YANBU to ask nicely, but assuming she just works there, she has to follow the guidelines she’s given from management about when reductions can be given so SWNBU to not give you a discount

Please DON'T blame the sales assistant. She's merely following procedure and orders that come from above and is not within the power herself to offer you a discount.

I work in a shop (though not a clothing shop) and we can issue 10% off items without any kind of managers input.
So damaged packaging, or something missing, dirty, misshapen etc we’d definitely reduce if you asked, in fact we’d probably have already done it without you asking.

She's probably had a spate of people purposely marking clothing to get a discount. I worked in a clothing store years ago. Around christmas especially people would mark the clothing practically infront of us and then demand a reduction.

Shop offers to sell something at a price. You can either take it or leave it.

From the description it doesn't sound as if she did anything wrong. She was simply following shop policy. If you have a problem with the store's policy, write to customer service. Don't stand there arguing with the poor chump on the till.

Was the romper suit the last one on the rail or something? Why didn't you just go and exchange it for a non-marked one?

Really, it's entirely up to the store whether they choose to give you a discount or not.

You could have picked up another one without a mark on it.

Automatically reducing because of marks would be stupid, people would start marking things to pay less. They were right to stick to their guns - you weren't obliged to buy it, after all.

I'd always ask for a discount in this situation! I've often got one too. It isn't that unusual actually. Even JLP will give a discount. But not all stores empower all their staff to give discounts, so always ask for the Manager.

I wasn't cross with her. It wasn't just what she had to say that seemed off but her mannerisms in her tone of voice weren't nice. She really seemed like she couldn't be bothered to be there

It's a retail job in a discount shop, at Christmas. Did you expect her to bow and scrape? She's probably sick of entitled, demanding people and the long hours/Christmas music on repeat.

Again, I really don't see what the point of saying you shouldn't have bought it due to her attitude is. I can assure you that you're not that important and she really couldn't give a feck what you do. You're just another face in the crowd.

Surely you'd wash a romper before using it anyway so it makes no difference.

I've known people use pencil to mark items as it can make a bloody good mess but washes out easily. You don't need to buy the item and they're under no obligation to reduce it for you.
