Was I being unreasonable trying for a 73p discount

Just picked up 6.2kg turkey, it came to £89.73 so I said got the butchers, is that £89 then? He flatly refused.
Yes yes I know you wouldn't try this in waitrose but neither would you have to pay £14.50 a kg (my husband's decision to use this butchers, not mine)

Was I being unreasonable to consider asking?

An unintentionally great pun though Grin

Clearly you've not read enough threads on here

Like I said at the start I was interested in people's opinions, I'm actually glad that I asked.

NisekoWhistler Oh I've been here a couple of years and seen a lot.

As previously explained, the way you said "is that £89 then?" As though you expected it is beyond rude.

Chrys2017 · 15/12/2017 21:20

Good god, is that how much turkeys cost now?

I couldn't believe my eyes either. Just spoke to family in the US—they are paying the equivalent of £2.50/lb for their turkey. Why do we always get ripped off in Briatin!?!?!

VladmirsPoutine · 15/12/2017 21:24

Chrys If it's any consolation their bird will have been drowned, washed, bathed and fed in chlorine.

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 15/12/2017 21:32

I've often had my butcher say it's £x but you can have it for £y. And, in fact, once at the meat counter at Waitrose when I was umming and ahhing about the price of a joint, the employee offered me a discount and advised me to always ask for a discount!

Hellywelly10 · 15/12/2017 21:36

Wow that's a big turkey. How many people are coming round?

Chrys2017 · 15/12/2017 21:37

VladmirsPoutine Really? That's disgraceful! Naive me again.

StealthPolarBear · 15/12/2017 21:39

"The law of mathematics states that you round to the nearest £"
That is not a law. Rounding up and rounding down are valid options, depending on the context.
How much are people willing to pay for a turkey to feed 16 then? You can bet if the op had talked about it costing 45 there would have been much sneering over the quality, and the life the turkey must have led. Pay too much and you get the "wow what a waste" comments. So tell me the figure that pleases everyone.

@Chrys2017 presumably because at £90 it's free range , High welfare and had a decent life / slaughter which doesn't seem to be the rationale behind American meat.

ButchyRestingFace · 15/12/2017 23:20

my dad always taught me that if you don't ask you don't get

If you don't ask, you don't get told to feck off.

It would never occur to me to ask. I'd have given him £90...

...in a parallel universe where I would actually consider paying £90 for a jumped up chicken.

I hope it tastes like a £90 turkey at least! Grin

Chrys2017 · 15/12/2017 23:25

That's true—they look at me like I'm crazy when I ask if they've considered free range.

ConcreteUnderpants · 15/12/2017 23:27

YABU.

I'd have given him £90, said "Merry Christmas" and assumed he'd put in his 'tip jar' for a drink afterwards.

I'm afraid you look like not only. CF, but a tight one, as well.

Sn0tnose · 15/12/2017 23:48

I quite often ask our nearest butcher whether he's got any bargains if I go in late afternoon, and have got some fantastic deals while filling up my freezer but I wouldn't dream of asking him to knock 73 pence off the bill. It wouldn't even occur to me. I think if I'd been behind you in the queue I'd have offered you the odd change just to stop you embarrassing yourself and the butcher.

Bridezilla2be · 16/12/2017 01:14

£89 Shock can we see a picture once cooked? Grin

roseretro · 16/12/2017 01:35

By all means haggle for a discount if it’s that sort of store, but I wouldn’t have bothered for 73p on a £90 item. You just look cheap more than anything. (Although understandable if you were paying with notes and didn’t have change on you)

OnlyAmy · 16/12/2017 01:50

Holy smokes! I'm American and did the math. That same turkey here would run ten dollars or a little over, so equal to about seven and a half to £9. I once went to a Whole Foods (which is usually referred to as "Whole Paycheck"-very very pricy natural food market) and saw a $72 turkey, which would be equivalent to about £54, and was astonished, as we never saw a turkey that was so expensive. It's considered a cheap meal here.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 16/12/2017 02:49

I manage an independent store and hagglers are the bane of my fucking life. You don't ask, you don't get - I do understand the rationale but you wouldn't do it in M&S who have a thousand times the bargaining power with their suppliers than I do, meaning that they, if anyone, have the margins to give discount.
You know what DOES get you discount? Being a regular customer. People who have shown loyalty to our store and who I see on a regular basis will get me saying "call that £XX"
I get to offer discounts. You don't get to demand them.

Yes I find the disconnect between this and the many many threads where posters are snobby about cheap meat amazing. It seems people just want to goad the op, either way round to me.

Personally I would have said £80 for cash?
