Was I being unreasonable trying for a 73p discount

Just picked up 6.2kg turkey, it came to £89.73 so I said got the butchers, is that £89 then? He flatly refused.
Yes yes I know you wouldn't try this in waitrose but neither would you have to pay £14.50 a kg (my husband's decision to use this butchers, not mine)

Was I being unreasonable to consider asking?

I can think of about a thousand things I’d spend £90 on before a turkey. That’s just weird.

Nelly5678 · 15/12/2017 18:11

That was the price of a life, don't be so bloody disrespectful. Ywbu

snackajacker · 15/12/2017 18:13

Pic of this turkey please. Non turkey eater so utterly fascinated Grin

NisekoWhistler · 15/12/2017 18:16

God no I didn't kick off, wouldn't dream off it, I just think if it was my business I'd do that. The fact that he said we charge for giblets whether you take them or not was a bit odd too.
I'm not concerned that he didn't accept my offer just thought it a little odd

YABU just stating you'd try it with an independent butcher and not a big store. The bigger stores have rhenprofit to give discounts and keep costs down. If you didn't want to pay that then you could have gone elsewhere instead of being a CF to save 73p.

leftmyheartintokyo · 15/12/2017 18:17

When you're spending £89 is there any point trying to save 73p?

If you wanted to bargain on the price you probably should've done so when ordering, at the per kilo price. But it's Christmas, so I doubt you'd get a discount on Turkey.

muttmad · 15/12/2017 18:17

You spent £90 on a turkey? 🦃

Wotrewelookinat · 15/12/2017 18:17

£89 for a turkey 😳??? God I hate this time of year and the turkey massacre it entails.

dworky · 15/12/2017 18:18

I don't think it's cheeky, he was free to refuse - as he did. Lots of retailers are happy to give discounts for larger amount sales.

NisekoWhistler · 15/12/2017 18:19

We are having it tomorrow, feeding 16.

All good with the responses, my dad always taught me that if you don't ask you don't get. I guess I was just using that.

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 15/12/2017 18:20

No - you round UP once you get over half way Confused - so you should have given him £90.

I always pay that for a turkey - to those saying it's expensive it's likely 20 people or 20/30 meals plus stock/broth

And it will have lived a good outdoors life and be fed organically for that money

dawnc27 · 15/12/2017 18:21

and to think i grouched at paying a tenner in asda earlier! okay it was only a 3.5kg one.
dont think our whole meal for 10 with 3 different meats at least and 3 course will even come to £89

laudanum · 15/12/2017 18:22

You were out of order. If the situation was reversed, you'd be calling someone a cheeky fucker for asking.

MayFayner · 15/12/2017 18:24

My local butcher would have said "let's call it £85".

If he didn't say that and just named the price, I'd assume he wasn't making much on it and say nothing.

No need for awkwardness over a few pence.

Pickleypickles · 15/12/2017 18:26

I agree if its 89.23 rpund down if its 89.73 round up. But i dont think you were rude to ask so long as, like you say, you didnt kick up a fuss or be demanding about it.

MiddlingMum · 15/12/2017 18:27

We're having a vegan Christmas meal, but I'd want the turkey to do all the cooking AND wash up afterwards for that price.

VladmirsPoutine · 15/12/2017 18:27

I think you sound a very good sport OP. That said I'm cringing a bit for you. But there we go. I hope you enjoy your turkey Wine

Salmonpinkcords · 15/12/2017 18:30

I don't think there is any issue asking

JemimaLovesHamble · 15/12/2017 18:31

God I hate this time of year and the turkey massacre it entails.

No different to the constant demand for beef, pork, chicken. The only reason turkey is not so popular the rest of the year is because it's a big bird (and also dry as the desert).

Mermaidblue · 15/12/2017 18:34

But it's a small business so I guess every penny counts. And if your are prepared to pay the £89 also pay the 73p.

Blackteadrinker77 · 15/12/2017 18:35

That is expensive per kg

Was it black Norfolk?

MotherofaSurvivor · 15/12/2017 18:36

Oooh I must go to the bother of putting a thread on Mumsnet about having to pay the 73p of an £89.73 Turkey.....

THIS is why some people are loaded. Quibbling over pennies. My Mum always says people who are wealthy, are that way because they're tight with their high income!

allertse · 15/12/2017 18:44

I'd be embarrassed to quibble over 73p if I was paying £90 for a turkey

WinnieFosterTether · 15/12/2017 18:49

YANBU but there are people in life who ask for discounts and there are people in life who consider that rude. Oddly enough the former get discounts; the latter don't Grin
My family never ask. DH's family always ask. People who don't ask think it's insulting. People who do ask often get a positive response. Few people are insulted by it except the people who never ask and then get insulted on other's behalf
Enjoy your turkey!

user1497997754 · 15/12/2017 18:52

I always wait till Christmas Eve and get one half price at my local co-op
