To me a sarnie is anything in bread and there are different types e.g. panini, bacon bun, stottie, hot dog, burger in a bun, toastie.

Open sandwiches is just a nice way if saying 'stuff on bread' and in my head is under the same category of people doing 'deconstructed triffle' for pudding. Angry

Yes they would have to specify toasted, but that does not make it not a sandwich. It doesn't become "not a sandwich" because the bread is toasted.
It's actually called a toasted sandwich.

That's almost as bad as places selling 'naked burgers'. They aren't naked. You've just taken the bun out

grumbles to myself about stupid expressions for food

Yes, I agree a toasted sandwich is a subset of sandwich.

But I was just interested in all these fine distinctions we make and about the idea of the default sandwich, the ur sandwich, the conceptual sandwich - if you asked me to visualise a sandwich, with no other descriptors, that sandwich to me would be two slices of untoasted bread with a filling.

Maybe you are served/expected to eat the burger without clothes. Ever thought of that?

It can only be a subset of sandwich if it is a sandwich.

It's a box of... well, bits that you'd put in between 2 pieces of bread. It's a salad basically. It sold as a breadless sandwich. It really bugs me.
