DH disagrees and just gave me this look Hmm when I asked him why it is not a sandwich.

So, ...agree/disagree?

Breadcake - it's a large flat bread roll. Some breadcakes are HUGE. And a bun is not the sort of sweet bread you might expect (iced finger roll, chelsea bun etc) it's an individual sized sponge cake, what down south might be called a fairy cake.

RestingGrinchFace · 13/12/2017 12:27

A sandwich happens between two slices of bread. Not a sandwich

meredintofpandiculation · 13/12/2017 12:49

A sandwich happens between two slices of bread. Not a sandwich Yeah. Things can be sandwiched together without making a sandwich.

SparklingSnowfall · 13/12/2017 12:50

Of course it's not a bloody sandwich!!

weetabix07 · 13/12/2017 15:43

I suppose anything stuffed between two bits of bread constitutes a sarnie.

But what the hell is an ' open sandwich?!!' 🤣

DixieFlatline · 13/12/2017 15:58

Would you put a hotdog in between two slices of bread from a regular loaf?

I've rolled a piece of bread around a hotdog when I've realised the hotdog buns were mouldy a bit too late.

DH eats up remaining hotdogs from the fridge by slicing them in half lengthways and placing them on bread, in an open sandwich formation. Bloody foreigners.

DixieFlatline · 13/12/2017 15:58

Should have read the post above mine before posting, I see. Grin

curryforbreakfast · 13/12/2017 16:11

Anythintg put in bread is a sandwich. A burger, a hotdog, a grilled cheese. If it has bread above it and below it, its a sandwich.

HeckyPeck · 13/12/2017 16:21

I really want a sandwich!

Fekko · 13/12/2017 16:22

What about an Oreo. That's a kind of biscuit sandwich then?

GreenTulips · 13/12/2017 16:23

I really want a sandwich!

There's one left, you can have a hotdog instead

crackerjacket · 13/12/2017 16:28

Bread? Check.
Meat? Check.

Sounds like a sandwich to me.

Fekko · 13/12/2017 16:29

No it's got to be cheese and loads of pickle.

curryforbreakfast · 13/12/2017 16:31

Well an oreo is not bread, but sure, you could call that a kind of sandwich biscuit.

Ontopofthesunset · 13/12/2017 16:44

It is very similar to a sandwich but it's not a sandwich. We wouldn't call a bread roll/bap a sandwich either - we'd say a cheese roll or a bacon roll or a ham bap. A sandwich, in the absence of additional descriptors, is a filling between two slices of bread. Therefore a sausage sandwich is sausages (usually sliced in half vertically so its flatter) between two slices of bread. A sausage roll, confusingly, is a specific pastry product. A hotdog is a frankfurterptype sausage in a long roll.

I know Americans use 'sandwich' more broadly to refer to burgers etc but if I asked my family if they wanted a chicken sandwich they really wouldn't expect a chicken burger in a bun; they'd expect cold chicken between two slices of bread.

Fekko · 13/12/2017 16:46

What about a panini?

curryforbreakfast · 13/12/2017 16:48

a panini is literally Italian for sandwich.

Fekko · 13/12/2017 16:51

But I would class it as a toasty - which I wouldn't class as a sandwich. Maybe a subset of sandwich.

curryforbreakfast · 13/12/2017 16:51

A toasty is a toasted sandwich. It can't not be a sandwich.

Fekko · 13/12/2017 16:52

But it's toasted... toast is toast - it's beyond bread...

Ontopofthesunset · 13/12/2017 16:52

Definitely a subset of sandwich, because a panino in UK usage is a small roll filled and toasted, not two slices of bread. A toastie is also a subset of sandwich, but neither are default sandwiches.

curryforbreakfast · 13/12/2017 16:53

Toast is toasted bread. How can bread be beyond bread? Confused

gingergenius · 13/12/2017 16:54

Ohhhh all the sandwich loveliness on this thread. I WANT A 🥪

Ontopofthesunset · 13/12/2017 16:54

Yes, a toastie is a toasted sandwich. But it's the descriptor that makes the difference, just like in an open sandwich. If someone asks for a cheese sandwich, unless they specify toasted or open or whatever, they'll get cheese between two slices of untoasted bread. They'd have to specify to get it toasted.

Fekko · 13/12/2017 16:55

Because you have to apply heat to it - it's bread with an extra process.
