No a hot dog is not a sandwich but a burger is a bit closer to being a sandwich than a hot dog. I’m hungry now, so thanks! Grin

It's sort of a sandwich, there's the filling and bread either side!

YANBU. Hot dogs are sandwiches in the same way that all thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs.

A sandwich is something edible between two slices of bread.

Pricilla Of course you wouldn't put it between two slices, you would wrap one slice around it Grin

Would you put a hotdog in between two slices of bread from a regular loaf?

My son does. He cuts 2-3 cold frankfurters into halves and puts them between two slices of bread. He calls it a Raft Sandwich Grin

But no, a hot dog in a bun is definitely NOT a sandwich.

From the all knowing Wikipedia :

A sandwich is a food typically consisting of vegetables, sliced cheese or meat, placed on or between slices of bread, or more generally any dish wherein two or more pieces of bread serve as a container or wrapper for another food type.[1][2][3] The sandwich began as a portable finger food in the Western world, though over time it has become prevalent worldwide

As a hot dog usually involves a bread roll I would say it fails this definition of sandwich. Even the sausages sizzles here (which are a bbq sausage placed diagonally along one slice of bread, with onions & sauces as preferred) aren’t a sandwich because although they use bread, it’s only one slice.

If the filling isn’t sandwiched between at least two separate layers of bread then it’s not a sandwich. It’s a roll or a wrap or a sizzle or a bun but it’s not a sandwich.

Why not file everything under the ‘hand held snack’ category?

It's a sandwich. Any filling between any type of leavened bread (to distinguish from wraps etc) is a sandwich. The bread can be sliced or a bun/roll/breadcake/teacake/barm/cob/etc etc.

If you get a bacon, sausage, spam, fried egg etc sandwich in a greasy spoon it doesn't come in sliced bread does it? It's still a sandwich.

If you claimed that sausage in a breadcake was actually a sausage roll, well that's a different thing entirely.

This thread reminds me of one of the most surreal experiences of my life where I tried to buy a ham sandwich in Greggs somewhere in the West Midlands. To me, a sandwich came in a breadcake (see above for alternative nomenclature). That was the way it was in Leeds Greggs. Hell I had worked there for two years while in the sixth form so made thousands of the bastards.

I could see the breadcakes behind the counter and asked for a ham sandwich. The assistant pointed me towards the (vastly inferior in my opinion) sliced bread sandwiches in the fridge behind me. I said, no, ham in a breadcake please. Cue several minutes of confused misunderstanding before I gave up and got a nasty chilled sliced bread one.

Breadcake? From Greggs? Confused what is breadcake?

I think a breadcake is an barm/bread roll/whatever you want to call it

Definitely not a sandwich.

If someone said to you "would you like a sausage sandwich?" you wouldn't expect them to then put a hotdog in front of you.

And bacon rolls are not sandwiches either. They are rolls.

I'd be over the moon for someone to put any arrangement of sausage and bread in front of me to be honest.

I think we see a sandwich as filling in between bits of flat bread.

A roll, a bap, a wrap, pita bread etc we tend not to call sandwiches.

However there is no law about it.,,Grin

Well yes, yes it does. Which greasy spoons are you going to? If you ask for a bacon roll, you get bacon in a roll, if you ask for a bacon sandwich it comes in between two bits of bread. I suspect you ask for a bacon sandwich, they don’t do them so silently give you a bacon roll instead. 🤣

There are obviously regional differences at play here.

I have never asked for a bacon roll and if I asked for a sausage roll, I would expect it to be sausage baked into pastry.

What do those who call a sandwich a roll say to get a sausage sandwich not a sausage roll of the pastry variety?

Hot dog, burger, sandwich, Cornish pasty, empanada... all proteins wrapped in carbs. All part of the same food family in my book. And before you ask, food family is a thing, because I say so!

So if you slice a hot dog length ways and put it in the bun the way you do with a sausage sarnie, does a hot dog become a sausage sarnie too?

Report

No YABU, never been a hotdog sandwich.
