Is this punishment acceptable?

At school DC was told to stand at the front of class with arms outstretched holding a bean bag in each hand for not listening, for 5 minutes. Dc is 12.

A beanbag is hardly a weight.

I don't think it's an acceptable punishment but it's not as bad as some here are making out.

As for taking away a chair it serves them right if they can't sit properly, the parents saying it's not acceptable to take away a chair from a child who is swinging on it would be the first to complain if their child over balanced and cracked their head off the wall/floor/desk.

If it were my child I'd email the head of department of that teacher about it and expect the teacher to be told that for of punishment isn't acceptable.

At the end of the day a punishment needs to be a worthwhile deterrent.

Agent it is a weight if you're holding it at an awkward angle for time .... give it a go with a tin of beans

No that's crap. It's akin to the stocks of Victorian times.

On these threads why do posters come in saying 'what did your ds do?' That's nothing to do with the issue. It worries me that these posters think this is ever acceptable practice!

A bit too far - that's good to know. Maybe just a blackboard duster thrown at the head? A twist of the ear for a pupil not paying attention? How do those sound?

Not an acceptable punishment imo and I am pretty strict.

How is a blackboard duster any different to the cane?

All I am saying is sometimes a storm talking to isn’t an effective punishment in every situation
