To really hate Christmas jumpers?

Just that really.

They’re bloody everywhere, all looking cheap, misshapen, gaudy, covered in cringe slogans and only good for wearing approx 3 weeks of the year (so also a waste of money potentially).

Maybe it’s because I’m getting old and crabbit but I remember when dressing up for Christmas used to be about elegance, not Bob from accounts with his Primark Rudolph pullover or your cousin Mel with some ghastly “#team naughty” sweater that’ll bobble and shrink after one wash at 40.

Meh. I just think they look shite, they’ve really become a “thing” past few years and and I get the feeling I’m in a huge minority by wanting to burn the lot of ‘em.

Ah, muffs. A muff is forever elegant, don’t you think?

All joking aside (sort of), when I was little we used to wear our “Sunday Best” on Xmas day. Not the full Communion get-up Grin but i was in my party dress, my mum would put on one of C&A’s nicer shirts, uncles would be in shirts as opposed to sweaters (or overalls) and my granny would give her hair a blue rinse in anticipation of midnight mass.

I did however grow up in the 1980s.

I think my point is why spend money on something that looks cheap and shite when you could just pull your best party dress/blouse/shirt/cravat out of your wardrobe?

And don’t get me started on “Christmas Jumper Day”...I know it’s for charideeee but still - urgh Envy

I am with the OP and don't have one.

twinjocks · 13/12/2017 22:09

I don't hate them, but I don't have any either. My nod to the Christmas jumper day is to wear my very dark-green-with-a-slight-bit-of-dark-green-sparkle-and-no-pattern jumper - it's my homage to dark fir tree forests.

But slightly off topic, OP, YANBU to be crabbit, I haven't heard that word in years, my Mum used to use it. I must repeat it many times this Christmas.

Hakarl · 13/12/2017 22:12

I have a nice Icelandic jumper I wear at this time of year

What have Icelandic jumpers got to do with it? Sorry just curious as I wear mine all the time and don't consider it seasonal at all. It's just a woolly jumper.

TroubledTribble28 · 13/12/2017 22:18

I've just spent the evening sewing the too long arm cuffs and waist cuff on a fucking jumper for fucking festive jumper day and it looks like it was done by a drunken fucking Elf. YANBFU.

FloControl · 13/12/2017 22:19

Like many items of clothing, it depends on the wearer. Certain items of knitwear, even woolly beanie hats (which I loathe) can look quite fetching on women generally, and this includes Christmas jumpers. But men look ridiculous in them, without exception. Children of either gender probably don't have a choice.

squoosh · 13/12/2017 22:22

They're just a bit too 'I'm mad me, in my mad Crimbo jumper'.

That's nice dear. Now go be mad somewhere else and leave me in my funereal garb.

passmethewineplease · 13/12/2017 22:24

I don't hate them but I'm not rushing out to buy one either!

Everything has have Christmas on it nowadays, even bed linen which I just don't get.

SheepyFun · 13/12/2017 22:29

DD has a Christmas jumper day this week. To give the school credit, they have suggested decorating an old jumper. Problem is, DD never wears jumpers. Ever. So we don't have any old ones. I strongly object to buying something that she'll wear for literally 5 minutes. Fortunately her school doesn't have a uniform, so it won't be too obvious, but I feel for those whose children would usually wear uniform and have a tighter budget than us.

DeadGood · 13/12/2017 22:29

Yes looking back at old photos there were a lot of pussy-bow blouses round the dinner table!
I suppose it’s gone the way of all things, comfort is king now. And I associate Christmas Day with being at home watching films. If I was going to someone else’s place (as suggested by the presence of your uncles) I’d like to think I’d dress up more.

TheLegendOfBeans · 13/12/2017 22:42

@twinjocks I’m well crabbit this time of year Grin Then around the 23rd it falls away and I’m all bells and whistles and jollity etc.

I find the fortnight before Christmas usually complete bollocks but the immediate period just before the day itself magic. Everyone’s off work, no work Christmas parties/lunches to -endure- enjoy, most folk have done their shopping, schools have closed, loads of folk on annual leave. Time to play!*

*but not in a fucking rancid shitty jumper ta

We bought some cheap ones a couple of years ago but nobody wanted to wear them for long as it wAs too warm! Ive recycled them into cushion covers this year.....

To really hate Christmas jumpers?
Toothfairy8 · 15/12/2017 18:48

No, I don’t want to spend money on something that looks crap that I’d only wear once a year.
But even worse than that - what about the ones with flashing lights? How are these being washed? I asked someone today and he said no it’s never been washed but I’ve only ever worn it about 8 times! Ewwwwwwwwwww lol

GrooovyLass · 15/12/2017 18:56

It was christmas jumper day at work today. I rocked up in a skater dress. I do NOT do christmas jumpers!

InvisibleKittenAttack · 15/12/2017 19:23

My DS has a flashing lights one, it goes in a gentle wool wash. (I bought one clearly too big to hope it gets worn next year too)

I don't like them, but kids do. I have one that's more fair isle knit with reindeers discreetly in the pattern so it sort of looks like I'm joining in...

Mind you, what's this bollocks about Christmas of yesteryear being elegant? I remember Noel Edmonds on my TV on Christmas wearing some fugly knitwear, and Val Doonigan (or whatever his name was) was rather a fan of the "Christmas themed knitwear" as far as I can remember as well. There was probably a bit in the early 90s when effort was made, before the Christmas jumper came back ironically at first and now is established.

tangerino · 15/12/2017 19:31

I will be wearing a Christmas jumper with jeans for our Christmas morning walk, then changing into something elegant for champagne, presents and dinner. Best of both worlds.

singingpinkmonkey · 15/12/2017 19:48

YANBU. It was Christmas jumper day at work and I didn't wear one. I still donated to charity but don't fancy buying something I'll wear once year and that doesn't suit me!!

ginorwine · 15/12/2017 20:13

I like the full on naff non serous ones and nice clothes but what I don't get is tasteful Christmas jumpers .

mussidenn · 16/12/2017 11:41

Glad I'm not alone! Horrible waste of money.
I don't go along with all the 'tackier the better' attitudes at Christmas though. Don't like flashing lights and do wear something half decent on Christmas day.
Maybe that's because I've spent a lot of time in a couple of other European countries where they do things differently (better!).

x2boys · 16/12/2017 11:47

I dont mind them but i do mind the way ds1 school casually texts a couple of days before his carol service children to wear xmas jumpers on friday for the carol service , ds had two xmas jumpers hes outgrown both im skint because its nearly xmas and because its pay day on monday i managed to find one on the market for a fiver thankfully

ScienceNut · 16/12/2017 17:30

Love them, my 2 yo and I have been proudly wearing them every opportunity since dec 1st

IfNot · 16/12/2017 18:16

What have Icelandic jumpers got to do with it? Sorry just curious as I wear mine all the time and don't consider it seasonal at all. It's just a woolly jumper.
Um...well, it's cold? I don't wear it in the summer!

junebirthdaygirl · 16/12/2017 18:30

Heard this week how they are so bad for the environment as people buy them wear them and throw them out. They refuse to wear them a second year and buy a new one. Tons of them are just thrown out. I was delighted when my dss wore them at first as so colourful but sick of them now. I have never worn one and never will. On Christmas dress up day in school l just wear red.

PoorYorick · 16/12/2017 18:46

I hate the things, but surely people give them to charity shops or put them in textile recycling mills?
