To really hate Christmas jumpers?

Just that really.

They’re bloody everywhere, all looking cheap, misshapen, gaudy, covered in cringe slogans and only good for wearing approx 3 weeks of the year (so also a waste of money potentially).

Maybe it’s because I’m getting old and crabbit but I remember when dressing up for Christmas used to be about elegance, not Bob from accounts with his Primark Rudolph pullover or your cousin Mel with some ghastly “#team naughty” sweater that’ll bobble and shrink after one wash at 40.

Meh. I just think they look shite, they’ve really become a “thing” past few years and and I get the feeling I’m in a huge minority by wanting to burn the lot of ‘em.

I do! They've become overkill. Saying that I have owned a Grinch onesie for the last couple of years.

gincamelbak · 12/12/2017 09:52

I have two. I bought one about 4 years ago and branches out with another this year. They are gaudy and synthetic which means they will last forever. So from a cost per wear POV THEY are probably going to be more economical than most of my other clothes...

I used to hate them. Then I submitted. Let go, be taken by the crude synthetics and flashing lights. Join us. Be us.

LemonysSnicket · 12/12/2017 10:01

Well, theyre nostalgic, so i'll allow them.

curryforbreakfast · 12/12/2017 10:03

I like mine, but thanks for telling me how hideous I just look in it. Hmm

Notso · 12/12/2017 10:15

I don't hate them but I don't own one either. Although I don't have to wear one. I can imagine if you in a workplace that is insisting on them it could be an annoying expense.
My kids love their though, they are cotton and the younger two have worn theirs almost every day since December the first. They either passed on to younger family members or sold. I sold two old ones last month which paid for DS2's new one.

BreatheMeIn · 12/12/2017 10:28

Xmas Grin yes to this. I wore one for a Xmas night out and then gave it to Ds2 age 9 (he's big for his age) to wear for "Christmas jumper day" at school.

VileyRose · 12/12/2017 10:34

Hate them.

TheLegendOfBeans · 12/12/2017 12:54

Let go, be taken by the crude synthetics and flashing lights.

Not on your friggin nelly.

I’ve had two texts this morning about “remembering to wear your Xmas jumpers” for the children’s carol concert and the playgroup Christmas party this week.

No. I’ll be turning up in my favoured head to toe black.

I’m with you. I just find them so wasteful, especially for children who outgrow them and ‘need’ another for the one enforced Christmas jumper day at school. What about families who can’t afford such frivolous expenditure? What about the environment and the workers who suffer poor conditions to produce throw away cheap items? I’m not a Scrooge...I’m all for a Santa hat or a bit of tinsel that can be used again but the whole Christmas jumper thing just seems like a horrendous waste to me.

Hate them, for the same reasons I hate fancy dress.

MelanieCheeks · 13/12/2017 18:29

Good grief, they are a bit of fun!

By all means don't wear one if you don't want to. Or go your own way and knit one, or stick some glitter and ribbons on something, or wear a festive hat.

But don't suck the joy out of a bit of wholesome good humour.

IfNot · 13/12/2017 18:34

I'm with you OP. I have a nice Icelandic jumper I wear at this time of year, had it years, but hideous acrylic Christmas jumpers can do one. When did this all start? ? I was in town the other weekend and it was full of office workers on the raz ALL wearing them!

ILoveMillhousesDad · 13/12/2017 18:35

pmsl at 'Christmas was about elegance' 😂😂😂

Christmas is about tack, lights, tat, going overboard and yes, Christmas jumpers.

Lighten up you misbag.

Kids love them and Christmas is, in the main, for children to enjoy.

TheLegendOfBeans · 13/12/2017 20:19

LOL @ “misbag”. I’m stealing that Grin

Janetjanetjanet · 13/12/2017 20:21

They are actually horrendous.

Homemadeapplepie · 13/12/2017 20:26

I’m with you OP, but I thought I was the only one to hate them!

goose1964 · 13/12/2017 20:46

I tend to go for t-shirts rather than jumpers. I have three, a what goes on under the mistletoe,a Christmas list and my favourite a hobgoblin one with the goblins roasting reindeer Pvt an open fire, but I'm banned from wearing it if children will be present

goose1964 · 13/12/2017 20:48

Forgot to say they have some elegant ones in M&S, one I love is black with beads forming snowflakes on it.

PoorYorick · 13/12/2017 20:48

Christmas jumper day at work tomorrow. I hate it but obviously I have to go along. I get the Christmas jumper joke, I just think it stopped being funny about five years ago.

TheNaze73 · 13/12/2017 20:48

They’re not even ironically crap.

YANBU

Sandsnake · 13/12/2017 20:56

I like them, because I can bung it on with some jeans and still look like I've made some sort of effort. As a jeans and jumper person who is not particularly interested in (or good at) clothes it works for me!

RebelRogue · 13/12/2017 20:59

I've got an xmas t-shirt. Is that allowed ? Grin

DeadGood · 13/12/2017 21:03

I get you OP.

When you say Christmas used to be about elegance, what do you mean? I’m thinking girls in fur-trimmed red flared coats, with a white muff* and bonnet. Is that what you meant? What about for adults?

*the hand warming kind, not the fanny kind.
