Grenfell ex-residents should get a 3-bed house with a garden if that's what they want

pingodolcepo · 11/12/2017 08:23

Daily mail outrage that some of the residents are asking for a 3-bed house with a garden. But honestly, they have been through a living hell that was caused by someone else's very bad choices.

There are plenty of people in London that have a 3 bed council house, why can't these people that have dealt with horrors get one also?

I know someone that got a council house in Highgate in the 80s, was a cabbie with a good wage, bought it when offered and sold it a few years ago for over a million and now lives in a fab place with loads of land and a pool in the south of France. If plenty of normal people got houses why can't these poor residents get one? They won't ever be able to afford to buy it due to the high cost of london houses now.

Here, I will stop beating around the bush:

  • Any attempt to do anything lowering the price of housing runs up against Tory homeowners. "Help to Buy", anything like that, without addressing supply, though dressed up as "doing something" only increases prices.

  • As seen above. Rich folk don't really want poor people around.

Vivienne Ive not been into London since 1988 and that was on a school trip to the science museum. There are loads of us who dont want to go to/live in London.

I don't normally post on here but felt I had to because people don't realise what is going on in this borough K&C, the corruption is sickening, and I only found out because we need to downsize because of my husband's illness.
The local housing trusts are selling off a lot of the housing stock, and I've just heard this housing trust held the council to ransom for months after the fire demanding huge rents for the properties they gave to the council.
And OldPony I wasn't just given my 4 bed flat (not house) many years ago now, we lived in a B&B for a year where we had to be out every day between 10am and 3pm, then one room temp place with a shared filthy kitchen and damp everywhere for 2 years, then I did a council swap twice to get my place now, which was like a squat when we moved in, took us years to fix it up, but we both worked shifts to not pay childcare, husband on 60 hours a week nights, and yes I did have 3 children working on minimum wage, but I think I brought them up well, one child is very gifted at languages and got a place at the same school as David Cameron's daughter, another got a scholarship to a prestigious private school, I hope that makes you even more sick at the cheek of a social housing tenant to rise above their station.

Make that "senior Tories (and Labourites actually) with large BTL portfolios".

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/12/2017 18:44

We could build in the sixties b cause there was more land available to build on.

Also, my post us nothing about the labels, that's a completely separate issue. Why are bringing up the panels in relation to what I said and you then quoted?

You can't build more housing if any kind where there is no land to build on. People need some green spaces to breathe and relax too, do you want to concrete over the whole of the city?

TheFirstMrsDV · 12/12/2017 18:50

White wc can't afford to have a family

Oh is that why no babies are being born to white wc families?

What an idiotic thing to say.

FluffyWuffy100 · 12/12/2017 18:55

@bobbyjim you sound a credit to yourself (and your children) but now I would be very surprised if you ever made it high enough up the list to get offered a tenancy (or even B&B accommodation).

A family with two healthy working adults? You'll be encouraged to take a private rental, and maybe given some help with the deposit guarantee thingy.

Sissyjd · 12/12/2017 19:03

I'd like a 3bed with a garden...hell a tiny two bed be nice, I work full time ect, no kids, im not a burden on society, I've some f**ng horrid tough things happen in my life, but entitlement is not one of them...they should get what the NEED, not what they WANT,

pam290358 · 12/12/2017 19:05

kittensinmydinner1 - despite having a legitimate, very obvious and very severe disability and being virtually housebound, I do have relatives and friends who will take me out and I find it a bit offensive that you think it’s disproportionately unusual that 8 out 14 families with a disabled member would be out. So close to Christmas ? Really ?

Battleax · 12/12/2017 19:07

I think people in kitten's type of work get jaded quite quickly.

Otterturk · 12/12/2017 19:08

No.

They should get what they need.

HelenaDove · 12/12/2017 19:09

Im afraid those attitudes are endemic in the housing sector Pam.

Battleax · 12/12/2017 19:10

Otter your NN makes me grin every time I see you. I can visualise the official portrait and everything Smile

woodhill · 12/12/2017 19:10

I meant it's harder if you are in private rented accommodation and leads to smaller families

HelenaDove · 12/12/2017 19:11

And they have a thing about doing this kind of thing in the run up to Christmas. As my post on previous page shows. It comes across as incredibly vindictive towards tenants.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/12/2017 19:16

between those scamming the system as sub let's and those manipulating the housing lists by paying GPS to write sob stories about fictitious illnesses Social housing , which I believe in, is simply not fit for business

Thanks to your very informative posts, it's becoming clear that there's an answer to my earlier question: in effect, whether anyone can be certain that all those being rehoused after Grenfell are actually entitled to such provision. However it seems to be an answer which some on this thread would probably consider unpalatable

BTW a PP mentioned the "beds in sheds" issue, which makes me wonder something else ... is there any possibility that some of those insisting on a garden actually want this so that they can build housing units in it?

TheFirstMrsDV · 12/12/2017 19:16

woodhill so what has being white got to do with it?
You don't get extra points for being black.
If a white woman had 10 kids she would have as many points as a brown one. Unless the brown one hadn't live in the country for five qualifying years and the authority she was applying to for at least two. Then she wouldn't be eligible at all.
What about white wc families who speak in a funny accent? Do they have as little chance as a white wc family who speak proper?
Show me a housing policy that says different?

HelenaDove · 12/12/2017 19:18

If this thread gets deleted it will be due to the racism not anything else

Battleax · 12/12/2017 19:18

It won't take long to delete a few iffy posts and carry on Helena.

HelenaDove · 12/12/2017 19:22

sorry............i meant my post on page 16 this thread is moving quite quickly.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/12/2017 19:26

A comprehensive needs assessment should be undertaken
And not everyone will require a 3 bed house with garden
Realistically such properties are scarce and not in the West London area

makeourfuture · 12/12/2017 19:30

People need some green spaces to breathe and relax too, do you want to concrete over the whole of the city?

There is no need to "concrete over the whole city". That is just hyperbolic.

lolalola19 · 12/12/2017 19:30

They should not 'get what they want'. They should get what they need 1 bed or 2 bed etc.

makeourfuture · 12/12/2017 19:40

Price chart.

Supply chart.

Basic economics.

Grenfell ex-residents should get a 3-bed house with a garden if that's what they want

Debandherkids · 12/12/2017 19:51

Absolutely agree. It's an essential service and a first world country they should only be able to do it if they do it properly or be totally held to account with strong penalties and guidelines that stop them hiding their money when things go wrong or they get discovered.
