113 women killed by men in the UK in 2016, 78 of them by their current/ex-partner [possibly triggering]

Not an AIBU, but posting for traffic.

Statistics released today show:

113 women were killed by men in England, Wales & Northern Ireland in 2016

100 of them were killed by someone they knew

78 of them were killed by their current/ex-partner

More than three-quarters of those women killed by their former partner died within the first year of separating from them.

Full article from BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42270719

“The Femicide Census says the total number of killings of women by men in 2016 is thought to be higher than the 113 it recorded because a number of cases are still under investigation and police forces did not provide some details to its freedom of information requests.”

Thanks for posting this, I’ll have a proper read through the report later.

113 though, fucking hell Flowers

You've got to wonder if these figures will increase with the issues over funding to refuges.

That's a lot of women killed by people who knew them and who once were supposed to love them.

CaveMum · 10/12/2017 08:59

sagamartha sadly I think you’re right. The government claim funding has been increased but facts are that refuges are being closed Sad

There needs to be much more funding.

Firstly for refuges.

But also for legal aid. You can only get it now in very very narrow circumstances. But court orders give the police better powers to protect women.

PinkSquash · 10/12/2017 09:04

It's chilling how many women have lost their lives to their partners/ ex partners. When I left my ex in 2016 I was offered a place in the nearest refuge- 100 miles away. I cannot imagine how much worse the situation will become with the cuts in funding Sad

sagamartha · 10/12/2017 09:05

We had a talk at work from IDAS. She was talking about there being many more people accessing the service and a lack of funding in the area.

HermioneWeasley · 10/12/2017 09:08

I cannot believe these stats haven’t improved in my lifetime. DP knew one of the women killed in 2016 and I worked with another. It’s appalling.

meredintofpandiculation · 10/12/2017 09:16

The proportion of homicide victims who are female is increasing, though in the most recent year published by ONS, almost two-thrids of victims were male.

" Women were far more likely than men to be killed by partners/ex-partners (44% of female victims compared with 6% of male victims), and men were more likely than women to be killed by friends/ acquaintances (32% of male victims compared with 8% of female victims)."

I’m so sorry Hermione Flowers

Also from the link mered posted

For those suspects where proceedings had concluded, 90% were male (257 suspects), 9% were female (26 suspects) and in 1% (2 cases) the homicides were corporate manslaughter (data not shown)

  • which isn’t particularly surprising, just totally grim.

Some shocking statistics from the report:

8 of the 113 women were killed in South Wales
7 of them were in the Greater Manchester area

39 of the women killed had a child or children aged under 18
3 of the women were pregnant when killed

Oh that Pool article is just heartbreaking. What can we do about this?

CaveMum · 10/12/2017 12:58

Page 27 of the report has a list of recommendations, though obviously the key issue is to make domestic violence itself a thing of the past. We must teach our sons and daughters that violence is never acceptable and that it should not be tolerated.

My aunt was murdered by her husband 25 years ago this new year. He had been abusive to his previous wife, my aunt never knew. She was too ashamed to access help. She left behind my 10 year old cousin.
I think somethings have improved, but not as much as you would expect in 25 Years. When I think about the progress we’ve made on cancer, dementia, inclusion for SEN in schools, with equality for women, for homosexuality, time seems to have stood still for DV. I’m at a loss as to why and how to make progress happen.

DancingLedge · 10/12/2017 13:47

And here's some terrible news.
On Tuesday, MPs debate the Government's proposal, which will REMOVE funding from women's refuges. Yes. Not increase. Slash.

Going to a refuge can be the only way to escape from a dangerous relationship.
Refuges are short of space now, and frequently turn women away: 60% last year.

If the current proposals pass, it's thought likely that 50% or more of refuges will close.
Please, please, sign and share the petition, which seeks to tell MPs that we don't think this is ok.

If you can find a few minutes, please email or tweet your own MP.

To withdraw support, and close the overburdened refuges we have, while we have these awful statistics of women's deaths, is just not on. If enough of us let our MPs know this, they will be influenced.

Don’t know if this is the same petition you were linking to but I’ve found this one which has 100,000+ signatures so far.

Just heartbreaking.
As a child my father was very violent (I’ve mentioned on other threads that we were houses in a refuge). I believe if WA hadn’t helped us my mother, me or one of my siblings would be dead.

Please sign the petition linked above.

I also struggle with that fact that male violence is an issue men don’t want to solve. We women are left to mop up all elements of it.

CaveMum · 10/12/2017 14:51

I’m going to post a thread in Chst with a link to the petition.
