McDonald's customer - single dads!

Hi I was in McDonald's earlier - this is not the AIBU GrinWink

It was super busy.

One elder woman said its always busy on a Saturday as "its where all the single men take their kids instead of having to do anything with them"

Actually, I think giving the nod to ageist stereotypes is the OTT (and bigoted) POV?

It's as relevant as her height (to pick up on an earlier example).

Though as height isn't mentioned anywhere in Equality laws, there isn't an -ism attached. People would just think it utterly risible to have mentioned that one irrelevant thing about them (and reaction to that would be fairly predictable too)

barefoofdoctor · 09/12/2017 16:43

Oooooooh I really fancy an 'OldMcDonalds' caramel frappe now.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/12/2017 16:46

To be fair she is partially correct. That said, it's warm, dry and the kids are probably dead pleased.

AuntieStella · 09/12/2017 16:46

"Yes, that's EXACTLY what was said. To the very letter."

I think that is too strident a viewpoint, and would not support posters who were going that far.

I do think it is important to remove unnecessary and irrelevant descriptors, especially where they tend to feed offensive stereotyping.

Why does the age of the person making the comment actually matter? What would have been lost from the post without it? Anything? Or just the stereotyping?

ButchyRestingFace · 09/12/2017 16:48

You do get that I was being sarcastic when I said that? Hence the use of Hmm?

KnightofWands · 09/12/2017 16:50

The woman who made those remarks to you is highly insulting. I have heard the phrase a "macDonald's dad" before but in practice its part of the Dads' spending time with their kids - the rest of the time may be park, cinema, sports together, day trip somewhere or just hanging out. The "mac" part is where they may eat - not the entire time together and isn't intended to avoid spending time with the kids!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/12/2017 16:51

She is being very unasonable. Single dads aren’t the only dads who ever take their children out solo - dh used to do it all the time.

Maybe mum is out shopping, or at work, or at home studying or just having some child free time.

zoomer445 · 09/12/2017 16:52

I do think her age is relevant though.

If she say say 20 years younger I don't think she would have made the comment?

Why not? You get rapid man haters of all ages. Grin

ButchyRestingFace · 09/12/2017 16:54

*er, raBid.

zoomer445 · 09/12/2017 16:56

Because these days women work weekends and dads have the kids. That didn't happen so much 50 years ago?

I wish my ex would take them to McDonalds, they just sit in his flat on his PS

limitedperiodonly · 09/12/2017 16:58

People use descriptors all the time. There's nothing wrong with that. They are not necessarily intending to be malicious but the descriptors often aren't helpful and could be harmful.

The OP talks about an elder lady. For all I know, she might be 20 and describing me at 53. She wasn't, because I like McDonald's and think it's a fine venue for an outing. I also think I am youthful, but I am aware some people think I'm past it. I can't stop them. One day they'll be in my comfortable shoes. If I let them live, that is Wink

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/12/2017 16:59

So we now should remove any descriptors out a story for fear someone take offence?
The descriptor is irrelevant to the anecdote.

GriefLeavesItsMark · 09/12/2017 16:59

Can I point out you can get carrot batons in MaccyDs (thus making this a TAAT)

GriefLeavesItsMark · 09/12/2017 16:59

Sorry, that should be May I

zoomer445 · 09/12/2017 16:59

I'm mid 30s I think she was in her 70s

Well, 50 years ago, there was no such thing as McDonalds in the UK and it was much rarer to for dads to routinely have EOW contact in cases where the parents separated, so that entire statement is untrue.

zoomer445 · 09/12/2017 17:02

Im a single mum and I take my kids to McDonald’s some Saturdays. (Not all, they aren’t always good enough to deserve one Hmm Grin)

I took mine there when they’d been naughty. They soon learnt…

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 09/12/2017 17:11

So 50years there were no women working retail/nhs/hotel/hairdresser?
I think you're making stuff up...

Whinesalot · 09/12/2017 17:12

If I was a single woman, a light bulb would be flashing in my head urging me to hang out more at a Macdonalds on a Saturday.

Good way to meet men then and see how awful their kids are
