There is a very easy to use bookmark function on the MN site that keeps your place on any thread that you are watching. Therefore there is no reason for posters to "placemark". Placemarking just fills up a thread.
Just hover over the bottom right corner of a post and it will give you the option to bookmark.

It is like people who use post the word F on Facebook to follow a discussion because they do not know to turn on notifications.

Well said OP.

Please could I also add a fervent wish?

If you can't be arsed to RTFT, at least read the OP's posts, which are kinda relevant to the thread. Otherwise, your carefully thought-out comments can be a waste of time (already asked and answered), irrelevant or inappropriate.

And if you can, highlight your posts and the OP's post in different colours, which makes the above really, really easy to do.
And makes reading the thread easier too.

Everytime I press bookmark it crashes so just unashamedly place mark. Now with glee cause I know it irritates people

abouttimeforanotherone · 09/12/2017 16:08

The bookmark function doesn't work on my device. I can hover for all I'm worth and it doesn't appear.

Sparklingbrook · 09/12/2017 16:11

You have to turn the bookmark function on for it to work.

YANBU although I do think it depends on the nature of the thread. Something lighthearted then it's not a big deal. But something very sensitive like when people are writing threads re: abuse, or some horrible crime, or worried their partner has left them, huge things like that, it's fucking rude as fuck to placemark or put a bloody 'dot'!! Have some compassion for fuck's sake.

Roussette · 09/12/2017 16:19

nanny totally agree. Sometimes I'm late to a thread but it's something of interest. I would never ever just go to the end and post! I always always read the OPs posts plus those either side of it usually just to get the gist of it all. Even then I sometimes qualify my post with 'sorry if this has been mentioned before'

tampinfuminragin · 09/12/2017 16:35

I didn't know that's what bookmark did. I've been scrolling through hundreds of posts on threads.

@Unnoticed this is what I get when I click on the 3 dots Confused

I agree.

I also find it annoying when people start with "didn't want to read and run" ... Just say what you're going to say.
