There is a very easy to use bookmark function on the MN site that keeps your place on any thread that you are watching. Therefore there is no reason for posters to "placemark". Placemarking just fills up a thread.
Just hover over the bottom right corner of a post and it will give you the option to bookmark.

It is like people who use post the word F on Facebook to follow a discussion because they do not know to turn on notifications.

If you notice a thread is missing then have a look at your internet history and access from there - that will show you the deletion message. If you don’t notice then it probably wasn’t worth remembering in the first place.

Howsthings1234 · 09/12/2017 11:16

This is really useful as I hadn't discovered the bookmark function on the app so now have it worked out. Cheers.

SendintheArdwolves · 09/12/2017 11:18

I find it annoying too. Pages and pages of "shameless placemarking!!" and "not placemarking, not at all!!! Grin"

And are the deletion messages really so fascinating? I know MNHQ does the occasional witty/sarky/rhyming one, but aren't they mostly just standard "this thread has been deleted/previously banned poster/we have our doubts about this one so we're checking behind the scenes" stuff?

MissionItsPossible · 09/12/2017 11:22

I never used the . but I did used to write vague messages in order to place mark. I got confused using bookmark as I couldn't remember which threads I was on but then once I figured out bookmark and watch, it was fine. The only annoying thing now is if it's a very long running thread which I've bookmarked and continued and then have to do something and close it, but forgot to place a new bookmark so I get returned to the old posts Angry

How do I bookmark...

OP I started talking about this on another thread and TBH I agree with you.

NashvilleQueen · 09/12/2017 11:29

You get the deletion message when youve watched a thread even if no comments. I totally agree OP

Butterandsugar · 09/12/2017 11:30

I might be some sort of wizard, but I can view the deletion message without writing on the thread. As long as I watch the thread it comes up.

The place marking messages irritate me too. They just clog up (usually already busy) threads with guff

Trueheart1 · 09/12/2017 11:40

I hopeyoustep Just watch the thread and then hover in the right hand corner of any post and the word bookmark will appear. Press the bookmark button.

I don't care much on lighthearted threads (though it does seem a bit pointless) but on the more serious ones, it just seems insensitive.

The worst is when someone uses a little sofa emoji to placemark...not on a lighthearted thread, but actually on one where the op is having a crisis during some sort of relationship breakdown. That's just revolting. Please don't let that become a thing.

It's because of the deletion message. You don't see it unless you have posted and the thread just disappears.

PinkSquash · 09/12/2017 11:47

I placemarked when the bookmarking function wasn't working, but it is annoying to scroll through '00s of posts that are placemarks

NorWoman · 09/12/2017 11:48

SilverySurfer · 09/12/2017 11:58

OMG no! Do people really placemark? Shocking. Shock

snash12 · 09/12/2017 12:34

Totally agree OP

To go through 10 pages for an update just because 100 people have written “place mark” is really annoying!

GriefLeavesItsMark · 09/12/2017 12:38

Sometimes the exciting soap opera is just that, except for the exciting bit.
