Hotel mistake, wibu to tell them I'll correct it after Christmas?

Sanshin · 09/12/2017 09:40

Recently went to Vietnam on holiday. Stayed in a 3 star hotel for 3 days at a cost of £90. Lovely hotel, lovely staff.

Whilst there we booked a trip organised by the hotel at a cost of $100.

When we checked out they forgot to charge us for the trip and we never realised as we were rushing around so just settled the bill they presented to us.

A week later I receive a friend request on Facebook from a lady who worked at the hotel. I accepted and she sent a message saying that whilst we were at the hotel we booked a trip that they forgot to charge us for. She goes on to ask if we will now pay for it because if we don't, the staff have to pay for it themselves. It was very polite but almost pleading. I felt really guilty as I know $100 is a hell of a lot of money to these people so I replied straight away and said of course we will pay.

I spoke to DH on the night who wasn't happy because we will now how to pay a currency conversion fee but agreed we would pay. Then as we have been so busy since we got back we forgot.

So she sends another message asking if we can pay now and if we send her the card details we can pay like that. I meant to speak to DH about it again but he's working long hours at the minute and I keep meaning to mention it but when he's here I keep forgetting!

Anyway yesterday she sent another message. However now we can't really afford to pay it until after Christmas. We have £500 left to last us until after Christmas and that $100 will leave us skint. If they'd charged us at the time it wouldn't have been a problem!

As it was there mistake wibu to tell them I'll pay after Christmas?

OP posts:
Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 09/12/2017 12:05

At no point in her posts has the op said she isn't going to pay. She's asked if it's unreasonable to wait until after Xmas.

gamerchick · 09/12/2017 12:05

This threads properly scary. No wonder we get heavily targeted by scammers.

You should never have dealt with that person on Facebook, you should have contacted the hotel directly. It doesn't matter if the fear is they'll get docked. You're going to pay so why would they?

Roussette · 09/12/2017 12:05

Why is everyone banging on about not giving details over FB? the OP isn't going to do that!

She probably isn't a scammer, after all... she knows OP didn't pay for a tour. However, it's too risky to send details like this. Use the link I posted (a reputable exchange company) to pay the hotel TODAY.

No you can't wait till after Christmas, you owe them.

ElvisIsAliveAndLivingInHull · 09/12/2017 12:07

This sounds well dodgy! Can you pay by paypal?

That is if you know you didn't pay.

Personally, I would not pay. Not now.

Not your fault they fucked up.

MiddleClassProblem · 09/12/2017 12:07

We don’t know the OP isn’t going to do that as they’ve still asked for an invoice via fb and doesn’t want to contact the hotel and get the staff member in trouble

festivedinosaur · 09/12/2017 12:08

@HuskyMcClusky

Hope you have more sense if it should ever happen to you or your family

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 12:08

She's asked if it's unreasonable to wait until after Xmas.

Yeah. And it’s not.

Minniemountain · 09/12/2017 12:08

Of course you're being unreasonable to leave it until after Christmas. It's not like either paying for the trip or Christmas have come as a surprise Confused

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 12:09

festive, I have more sense than to think the whole world is scamming me because I live in a wealthier country than them, yes.

PersianCatLady · 09/12/2017 12:10

Elvis
Even if you definitely owed the money and payment was 100% secure you wouldn't pay the money??

MrsSthe3rd · 09/12/2017 12:12

FGS, this is ridiculous.

Op, you are well aware you owe the money. Just contact the hotel and say that you've realised you didn't pay for the trip and pay what you owe.

In answer to your actual AIBU......Yes, you are BU to leave this until after Christmas as you know you owe this money.

Stop arsing around on here, and pay the money directly to the hotel, by you calling them.

Your headache may even go too! Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 09/12/2017 12:15

Also don’t understand that if you discussed it with DH and agreed you would pay, why do you need to discuss it again?

Hopefully you will have contacted the hotel by the end of the day before we get 40 pages of poster just screaming “CONTACT THE HOTEL!”

Roussette · 09/12/2017 12:15

I hope those that say 'don't pay now' get caught out with this attitude.

Even though it's Asia it doesn't mean 1. you should not treat them with the same respect as hotels and services in the UK.

  1. Just because it's Vietnam doesn't mean it won't catch up with you necessarily

I honestly could not live with myself just ignoring this

ptumbi · 09/12/2017 12:17

You should never have dealt with that person on Facebook, you should have contacted the hotel directly. - no. The hotel should have contacted her directly.

To have some random 'friend-request' you over FB and suggest that you pay over credit card is what should have set alarms ringing.
What if you did't have fb? Or didn't respond? Would 'she' have just shrugged and moved on?

PurpleMinionMummy · 09/12/2017 12:17

Yabu to not pay now.

But I'd be wary of being contacted randomly over fb. Surely the hotel would have formally contacted you

festivedinosaur · 09/12/2017 12:18

@HuskyMcClusky

You are deluded if you think the hotel don't have the ops details to contact her.
Hmm
It is rediculous to think that co tasting op via a Facebook request is in any way normal

I'm not saying the op doesn't owe the money to the hotel.
But if staff member knows this and tries to get the money for themselves in the hope of the op paying directly to them using her credit card details then no wonder be cagey scammed so often

I would have contacted the hotel immediately to find out what on Earth was happening for one of their staff to contact through Facebook and would have been asking for a genuine proper way to pay to the company and not to said staff member

Grin
ptumbi · 09/12/2017 12:18

No one is saying 'don't pay now'. Everyone (normal) is saying don't pay over fb, and don't pay unless it is definitely from the hotel! (some people are saying don't bother checking, because of course it's not a scam...just pay now)

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 12:22

Well, festive, of course they’ve got her details. Never said they didn’t. It’s got nothing to do with why I think your post was borderline offensive.

iBiscuit · 09/12/2017 12:22

I have more sense than to think the whole world is scamming me because I live in a wealthier country than them, yes.

I have more sense than to take at face value a message from some Facebook random claiming to be a member of hotel staff from Vietnam. They could be Gary from Kentucky or Simon from Basildon for all you know.

RhiannonOHara · 09/12/2017 12:24

I feel for the staff if they might get sanctioned over their mistake, but I wouldn't hand over a penny on the grounds of a FB message. Hmm

Phone the hotel if you can, or at least email management.

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 12:24

They could be Gary from Kentucky or Simon from Basildon for all you know.

Yes! Who just happen to know exactly where the OP stayed, and when, and the exact price of a tour she took that she didn’t pay for!

You’re right, that would happen.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 09/12/2017 12:28

There is no question as to should you pay is there? You've just got back from Vietnam, you know how much money $100 is there.

I wouldn't send the money via Facebook either, this smacks to me that the staff member is maybe trying to cover up their mistake.

I paid for many of my trips/train tickets directly to hotels in Vietnam before I went and they sent me a link to use. I would've asking if they can do that for you as well.

whoareyou123 · 09/12/2017 12:30

Even phoning the hotel up may not solve the problem as the person answering the phone may be the one on FB.

Personally I am not sure I would be making international calls anyway (maybe not cheap) to resolve an issue that wasn't my fault and may be a scam.

It's a difficult one.

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 12:31

You've just got back from Vietnam, you know how much money $100 is there.

Yes, but she’s got Crimbo coming up and we all know how expensive that is! Hmm

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 09/12/2017 12:32
