Hotel mistake, wibu to tell them I'll correct it after Christmas?

Recently went to Vietnam on holiday. Stayed in a 3 star hotel for 3 days at a cost of £90. Lovely hotel, lovely staff.

Whilst there we booked a trip organised by the hotel at a cost of $100.

When we checked out they forgot to charge us for the trip and we never realised as we were rushing around so just settled the bill they presented to us.

A week later I receive a friend request on Facebook from a lady who worked at the hotel. I accepted and she sent a message saying that whilst we were at the hotel we booked a trip that they forgot to charge us for. She goes on to ask if we will now pay for it because if we don't, the staff have to pay for it themselves. It was very polite but almost pleading. I felt really guilty as I know $100 is a hell of a lot of money to these people so I replied straight away and said of course we will pay.

I spoke to DH on the night who wasn't happy because we will now how to pay a currency conversion fee but agreed we would pay. Then as we have been so busy since we got back we forgot.

So she sends another message asking if we can pay now and if we send her the card details we can pay like that. I meant to speak to DH about it again but he's working long hours at the minute and I keep meaning to mention it but when he's here I keep forgetting!

Anyway yesterday she sent another message. However now we can't really afford to pay it until after Christmas. We have £500 left to last us until after Christmas and that $100 will leave us skint. If they'd charged us at the time it wouldn't have been a problem!

As it was there mistake wibu to tell them I'll pay after Christmas?

OP, a very quick google will explain very simply how to send money to vietnam and it would have taken you less time to sort something out than it did to start this thread and post on it

Twice on this thread I've done links to a Foreign Exchange that will send money from a UK bank account to a Vietnamese bank account for a small transaction fee. (I am not saying sending it to the FB woman, I am saying contacting the hotel and getting all the necessary bank details). I honestly think the OP is hoping the hotel doesn't reply and it all goes away because she is not being proactive in sorting this. Perhaps she didn't like the Chloe Moretz look alike on reception. Hmm

"Roussette* not saying it is the case with the company that you've provided links to but sometimes when the transaction fees are minimal they actually get their money by giving terrible exchange rates.

Do wonder why the hotel isn't being more proactive other than the woman on FB. Maybe they don't think they uncharged her (it was a scam) though they may accept the money if offered.

Why do people keep going on about not sending over card details? Not once has anyone said 'yes do that, it would be a great idea'! OP owes the money, find a way to bloody pay it. It's not hard. 'Still no invoice' - is just an excuse to get out of paying

This is the thread that keeps on giving!
Tl;dr (which seems to apply to most PPs):

  • OP has contacted the hotel directly and requested an invoice
  • presumably with invoice will provide account details which OP can then use to make payment.
  • No amount of supplying links to methods for making overseas payment will make any difference until OP has account details for the hotel and the hotel knows what the hell the payment is for (and can therefore apply it correctly to any debt owing).

End of story.

Not once has anyone said 'yes do that, it would be a great idea'!

Actually roughly that has been said. Apparently the op is being racist by not sending her details over facebook messenger.

Iv'e no idea why the op cant just ring the hotel though...

Why would the OP ring the hotel when she has not intention of paying back this year (or possibly at all_?

If they send an invoice like I've asked for, I'll pay immediately. The email we've used is the one we used to arrange our visit with the manager in the first place. I'm not chasing them to pay it, I'm no angel. Ball is in their court now. And actually I quite liked Chloe.

Branleuse How do you work that out? I find that after Christmas money isn’t so tight again because I’m not buying gifts and wrapping paper etc and with shops being closed and people off work I imagine what you have left just before Christmas is to do you for that time and the last few essentials.

i dunno, i am always skint after christmas because ive spent all my money on other peoples presents. I thought that would be obvious. January is always a tight month for me.

I thought everyone was skint in January!

Why skint in January? I buy before Christmas, not after.

We’re not skint in Jan! Usually better off than any other month because we’re on a diet, not drinking alcohol and don’t go out because we’re hibernating Grin.

We get paid at the end of December and have obviously already bought everyone’s presents by then!

You get paid early in Dec so it’s a longer wait for the January pay check

But of course, everyone budgets for Christmas all year round so this should affect you at all.

I get paid weekly so it's all good for me. But in all the other jobs Ive had, I spank the early December pay and then I'm skint until the end of Jan!

See I’m on benefits so when my two weekly and weekly money isn’t being spent on presents even alongside saving up for park, I do feel a bit better in January. Even though I have four people birthdays, I get to buy their gifts in the sales Grin

I'm never skint in January but friends often are which is a bit of a shame because it's a nice time to have dinner because all the mad xmas parties are over and staff have more time for you and are pleased you've come along.

But I digress. I agree with the OP that the ball is now in the hotel's court.

It's well into the New Year. Have you paid up?
